NEW DELHI: Terror attacks in India have graduated from the bombs-on-trains variety to commando-like operations in Mumbai, or blasts like the Germany Bakery in Pune.

But thus far, India has been spared the suicide bomber - the kind that rammed into the Indian embassy in Kabul, or into the CIA tent in Khost, or even in the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

That could change. In a development that has raised concerns in the Indian security establishment, recent intelligence reports from Pakistan point to the Lashkar-e-Taiba now targeting Taliban militants as recruits.

Officials tracking developments in Pakistan said LeT has been training 130 Taliban militants who have surrendered to the Pakistan establishment. The training programme, being held at an "institute" in Lahore, has been going on for the past three months and is even now under way.

Officials believe these militants - who are already radicalized and motivated - could be used to do LeT's work in India and Afghanistan. This could add a whole new dimension to terror attacks in India.

It's possible India will share these details with Pakistan during the next round of talks, whenever they happen. While the foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan don't have the whole-hearted support of every part of the government, as minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur stated on Saturday, India will use the talks to raise its terrorism concerns with Pakistan.

LeT has not really had much truck with the Pakistan Taliban or the Tehreek-e-Taliban, which, along with other terror groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Sipah-e-Sahaba are targeting the Pakistani military establishment. LeT confines its activities to India, and fights with the Afghan Taliban and Al Qaida in Afghanistan (of course, in recent years, LeT has moved further afield into Europe as well).

LeT has also maintained its close ties with the Pakistan intelligence juggernaut, ISI, and is a vital instrument for the agency. It wasn't for nothing that LeT was used for attacks on Indian interests in Afghanistan.

But if LeT is training Pak Taliban fellows, said sources, that denotes a whole new level of terror intent.

LeT is a front line defence unit of pakistan. its aim is to cause as much damage as possible to India and has no or little interest in the so called kashmir issue. The way suicide bombers are blasting themselves in afghanistan and pakistan like Diwali crackers is very alarming and astounding. we should always expect and be prepared for such attacks near defence units,DRDO labs, economic and business zones ,Nuclear installations in India by creating multi tier security check points. As per news reports David headley had filmed many such vital installations during his recce mission in India!!! But one thing is surprising to me,why so many suicide bombings are taking place in Lahore ,NWFP alone? Is it an anti -pak Taliban cleansing activity by pak army and ISI? Ethnic cleansing!!!

Well this changes very little as far as threat perception goes.

A suicide bomber may be a more intimidating weapon.

But its exactly the same set up as all other terrorist attacks.

We still need to rely on Proper intelligence for threats before hand and act quickly.

Bringing a susie bonber means it will lead to a trail much smellier than the 26\11 trail. If I was sane and a member of LeT .I would rather prefer discrete bombing. But one thing that amazes me is this cannon fodder culture of Pakistanis.Their poor make good suicide bombers ,infiltrators to be sent into India or Afghanistan and then martyrs. They don't seem to cherish their own countrymen rich or poor unlike us indians

well even if the trails are bigger and directly lead to its perpetrator aren't we now got greater experience of blasting the perpetrator of terrorist act with the tons of dossier papers in duplicates.to and fro.I think GOI even has by now all the template of the dossiers so that every time an attack happens it just can fill in the blanks on the dossier and be efficient in its working.Seriously,to thwart or cripple L-e-T its godfather must be crippled first and thats pak army /isior even narrow down the list to core commanders and their families.

India trains its army with 'eye on PLA', and 'eye on PA', so Taliban is piece of crap for it.

That will be an act of war. Besides, why would you want to waste a million dollar missile on a 1000 rupee hut?

Many more thousands of insurgents were killed. Collateral damage in dealing with Taliban is much less when compared to dealing with an organised army as an adversary. Hence India has the upper hand.

Hope these thugs will be taken care of while crossing the border. More physical security, intelligence and counter-terrorism are the only options left against these scum for now.

India has retaliated to each of these, without firing a single bullet.

For Pakistan, diplomacy failed, then its army also failed (in repeated wars with India), hence it's using non-state actors.

For India, our diplomacy has taken care of things. Pakistan is infought, bankrupt, and nearly isolated on the larger world stage. We shouldn't lose our higher ground on things with direct aggression.

L-e-T terrorists are anyway cannon fodder for PA.so it doesnt matter to them if they die in thousands.but our armymen are not cannon fodder, they r precious soldiers of the land.

Right, and the point you're trying to make is...?

When Taliban poses such a threat (which isn't anything new, since we already have anti-India insurgent groups (not that Taliban is any special)), India will address the security situation with its Army, Police, and BSF. What do you propose we do, form our own 'insurgent' group? Certainly not. And going to war over a terrorist attack (not the scale of 26/11, those much smaller), certainly isn't feasible. Many more of our 'precious soldiers' will be killed since they'd be facing an organised adversary. Hence it's best that India tackles the situation covertly, and through aggressive diplomacy. Right now our diplomacy is in great shape.

fighting proxy war with diplomacy gives impression of being intimidated by the terror.BTW they are no way non state actor as being white washed by pakistani govt. after 26/11.they are all state actors nurtured by pakistani establishment.if you are saying that indian diplomacy has been successful in fighting proxy war i dont think so.reasons being:
1.Pakistan has successfully diplomatically able to white wash a state actor L-e-T as non state actor.world has bought into this theory of non state actor.even indian govt and media and people also started believing in non state actor theoy but all this thime and even now L-e-t is/was always state actor.feb 5th rally of all terror groups in POK proves it.Latest being the report of pakistani army paying up the families of 26/11.If you look into the deep nexus of PA and L-e-t then latest link of david headley aka daood gilani and thawaur rana comes to mind with their link to PA.

2.Indian diplomacy has failed in projecting pakistan as terror state.from being perpetrator of terror pakistan is being recognized as victim of terror like india.oh really but their is a catch...where g.parthsarthy many times put it that pakistan is victim of its own terror but india is victim of pakistani terror..

    3. last not the least is the diplomatic faliue at sharm-el-sheikh and then trying to pass it as drafting error.is it hilarious that govt with all its IFS trained diplomats commits drafting error like a typist do who sits outside court under tree

point is that for PA it doesnt matter if L-e-T terrorist die.coz for them they are cannon fodder but our armed forces are not cannon fodder.india can have its own proxy war inside pakistan.even khalistani terrorists were armed and supported by PA.how it was tackled certainly not only through diplomacy.india had its own proxies in pakistan in 1980s and early 1990s.And you cant act as holy than thou by saying that india dont have proxy groups.india used its proxies in bangladesh war .then in srilanka.and it had its own proxies in pakistan too till 1997 when gujral doctrine put end to it.

Not at all. Being able to solve your problems without firing a bullet is a show of strength, not weakness.

The world is adequately aware of that. Washington acknowledges that, so does London, Paris, and Moscow.

Once again, no. In the events following 26/11, India made clear and direct allegations about the attack being state-sponsored (something India does not, if it can't substantiate), its allegations were backed by Washington, and several world powers which quickly stepped in to stop a war. In return for our peace, Washington handed Pakistan the Kerry-Luger bill. That itself shows diplomacy worked. The individuals you named came in with American papers. Now that they're caught, they're better off being interrogated by the CIA, which hands over anything worthwhile to India on a need to know basis.

Indian diplomacy didn't do that job in the first place, hence it did not fail. The world regards Pakistan as "the epicentre of global terrorism", nobody goes there on a holiday, not many invest in its debt-ridden economy, and there's virtually no international sports there. So there you go. You're reading too much into what NDA's diplomats have to say. Parthasarathy certainly didn't do a better job, his comments aren't that valuable.

After so much NDA-sponsored hue and cry over Sharm-el Sheikh, exactly what were its repercussions on India? Did we have any concrete dialogue with them? On Kashmir? On their Indus water bitchfest? On their Balochistan bitchfest? None.

cock a snook rally on feb 5 and then pune blast followed by kabul blast sure gives the signs of weakness.or is it like some death by pin prick terror attacks doesnt matter in india, after all there are 1.2 billion people.or is it like wthese are tolerable all with in limits of indian red lines until kargils and 26/11 happens and wakes up india from its slumber.

washington/london/cannada hobours/supported many anti india terror groups and its leaders.who can forget the canada's bungling in kanishka bombing case.who is not aware of washington's double dealing in 1992 mumbai blast case or the so called washingtons non-cooperation in allowing indian sleuths to investigates rana/headly.if such is the behaviour of washington then it doesnt matter if washinton acknowledges it or not..

or washington awarded pakistan by kerry lugar bill shows pakistani diplomacy won.how can you be so sure that cia will hand over every bit of information when the didnt even allowed indians to investigate them.

economy sports doesnt matter to PA all that matter is its hold on power in pakistan and the the proxy war with india.ok u can keep aside parthsarathy as NDA diplomat but how about k subramanyam,B.raman, vikram sood.or it like they too are. just enthusiatic bloggers and journalist or just intelligence people not to be believed.or is it like only american citizen sidharth vardarajan and only praveen swami,c.rajamohan whos tells that govt. won by diplomacy are to be believed..

it wasnt only NDA hue and cry even with in congress also its own leaders also questioned it.at last shivshankar menon has to take blame by terming it bad drafting to bail out PM.repercussions of B word is that it legitimaised pakistans proxy war in india coz pakistan says that india is also fomenting trouble in balochistan.thats another matter if india is doing or not but when paki tan say 1000 times a lie from roof top it becomes truth just like india is stealing indus water and want to make pakistan desert by building dams.and to shred those lies it takes effort of a whole thread on DFI...:)
