US charges Ukraine oligarch, Rajya Sabha MP for mining racket

Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash, arrested in March in Austria, was the mastermind behind an $18.5 million scheme to bribe Indian officials for a titanium mining contract, US justice authorities said Wednesday.

The US Justice Department unveiled an indictment against Firtash and five others, including an Indian member of parliament, charging them with various counts of racketeering, money laundering, and violating the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

It said that beginning in 2006 they sought to bribe Indian officials to gain mining licenses in Andhra Pradesh state, expecting to generate more than $500 million a year from sales of titanium products.

The charges said US laws applied because the conspiracy involved using US financial institutions, travel to and from the United States, and use of US-based communications -- computers, telephones, and the Internet.

The indictment singled out Ukrainian chemicals and media tycoon Firtash and his Group DF as behind the scheme.

"Firtash authorized payment of at least $18.5 million in bribes to officials of both the state government of Andhra Pradesh and the central government of India to secure the approval of licenses for the project," the charges said.

Firtash, 48, a close associate of ousted pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych, was arrested on US request on March 12 in Vienna and held for extradition.

Nine days later he was released on bail at a record 125 million euros ($172 million), promising not to leave the country as he sought to challenge extradition.

The five others named in Wednesday's indictment include Hungarian businessman Andras Knopp, 75; Ukrainian Suren Gevorgyan, 40; US-resident Indian Gajendra Lal, 50; Sri Lankan Periyasamy Sunderalingam, 60; and KVP Ramachandra Rao, 65, an Indian MP and former Andhra Pradesh official.

It said Rao, formerly a close advisor to the late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, solicited and took bribes for himself and others in exchange for helping arrange the mining licenses.

All five remain at large, the Justice Department said.

YSR was in his times known as `King of corruption` , ` ATM of Congress` etc. He along with his cronies sold the natural resources of Andhra for a song in return for cuts for himself , the Party and investment in his son's businesses.

The poor in Andhra though affectionately remember him for the freebies he gave, also he was a charismatic personality. I think @happy and others from AP would be able to give a better picture of the late YSR.

The estimates are that the corruption is close to 1 lakh crores and for each rally YSR CP(Jagan) has spent close to 10's of crores during the last 5 years.

@happy is epitome of bigotry & hypocrisy. He justifies corruption if it was done by Christians but cries hyenas everytime he hears "Modi". He has been thoroughly exposed & isolated over time like @sayareakd I am yet to see worse category of individuals.

You should read happy's post some more.

S in YSR = `Solomon` so I guess you are wrong.

Not that it matters - YSR was a crook just like so many other top Indian politicians, so we can say he was a true Indian !

YSR and his family are new benchmarks for Indian corruption.

He has given every one license to loot police, doctors, contractors, liquor etc.

Itz corruption at Industrial scale from grass roots. He literally ruled state like Don.

Even House keepers for govt staff(Police,Professors etc) working IN kuddapah ,and their strong hold should be only appointed after their recommendation.

After coming to power they eleminated all opposition in ananthapur and kuddapah through murder ,false cased, holding back fertilizers, electricity to opposition majority villages.

They even harassed colony in towns who elected opposition ward members by cutting power, water etc.

Jagan Reddy, India’s richest politician, lied to EC on assets
he did not declare his palatial houses in Hyderabad and Bangalore worth over Rs 200 crore
Jagan has cleverly concealed his ownership of a massive mansion in Bangalore, which has a private helipad. It is located in the Green Belt area of Yelahanka. This property is valued at over Rs 100 crore

In 2004, when Jagan’s father YSR Reddy was yet to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, he had only Rs 8.19 lakh of assets:rolleyes:
In the first six months of the current financial year 2010, he has already paid Rs 84 crore as advance tax, :scared2: anticipating his annual income to be in the vicinity of Rs 500 crore or much more.

Jagan’s modus operandi is old-fashioned; open several companies, transfer funds from one company to another and use these front companies to acquire assets

Jagan Reddy’s 75-room palace stuns CBI into action | Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

The officers were at Jagan’s residence in the hope of finding some key documents relating to the amassing of wealth by one of the richest MPs of the country.
For the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials conducting a search operation at the lavish residence of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy at Lotus Pond in Hyderabad, it was a jaw-dropping sight. The 75-room residence completely knocked them out.

The officers were at Jagan’s residence in the hope of finding some key documents relating to the amassing of wealth by one of the richest MPs of the country.

“The CBI did not have an idea of the scale of the building. Theofficials quickly found out that the six members in the team would never be able to complete the search and inventorising of the building. So, more officers were sent into the building,” a source tracking the developments said.

Jagan’s residence is situated in a 32-acre spread, in the upmarket Banjara Hills area. Not many could enter the building since the raids on Jagan’s establishments began on Thursday morning as it was under a cover of tight security. But the sources said it was nothing less than a palace!

“It is spread in a place double the size of the international cricket stadium in Hyderabad,” the source said. It was also said that there was a plan to construct a helipad on the premises and Jagan was thinking of buying a helicopter. Unofficial estimates pegged the cost of the building including its interiors at close to Rs350 crore.

For the officers in the search team, it took them 10 hours to go through the building and record the inventory. “Even the bathrooms were searched,” the source said. However, getting into some of the rooms was not that easy for the CBI officers.
Family members of the son of former chief minister YS

Rajasekhara Reddy at first refused them entry into a prayer hall. It took some tough talking from VV Laxminarayana, joint director of the CBI in Hyderabad, to convince the family members including some women members of the family, to step aside.

Interestingly, Jagan was busy on his consolation tour (Odarpu Yatra) in Krishna district of the state while the CBI officials were busy recording the findings at his residence.

“The entire building was video-recorded by the CBI officers,” the source said.

Jagan’s sister and YSR’s daughter Sharmila, her husband and an evangelist Anil Kumar, Jagan’s mother and YSR’s widow Vijaya Lakshmi were present at the residence at the time of the search. Sources said CBI officials questioned Vijaya Lakshmi and Br Anil Kumar, and that the family members were cooperating with the investigators.

What the search yielded was not known but apparently several incriminating documents and computer hard-discs were found in some of the rooms. It was following a direction from the Andhra Pradesh high court that the CBI swung into action to probe the allegations of amassing of wealth by the MP during the time his father was chief minister of the state.

It was alleged that the corporate entities and individuals who were allotted land for SEZs, mines and irrigation projects, pumped in kickbacks in the form of investments in Jagan’s businesses including the two media outfits - a Telugu news daily and a TV channel. The CBI filed an FIR in a special court in Hyderabad on Wednesday naming Jagan as a prime accused.

Various sections including 120B (criminal conspiracy) were slapped on Jagan by the CBI. “The CBI officers were unfair while conducting the searches. They had taken inventory of even the handkerchiefs and furniture in the house,” B Shobha Nagireddy, a follower of Jagan, said

How the hell can a minister of such importance manage to amass so much wealth through corrupt practices in full public glare? Andhraites need to wake up and vote not on the basis of caste and religion but for the sake of the nation.

Jagan is a businessman long before he became a politician. Let andhraites worry about Andhra...you worry about the menace of hindutva terrorism which is causing waves across the nation.

Btw, you need to come up with better words than "apparently"
