TEHRAN – Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has called for the expansion of relations between Tehran and New Delhi, saying the two countries have close views on regional and international issues and share common interests.

Larijani made the remarks during a meeting with Mohammad Hamid Ansari, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, in New Delhi on Wednesday.

He also said that certain countries were seeking to undermine the relationship between Iran and India, adding that international developments necessitated increased cooperation between the two countries.

Commenting on the latest round of talks between Iran and world powers over the country's nuclear program, which was held in Kazakhstan on Tuesday and Wednesday, Larijani said that Iran's nuclear issue would be resolved in the near future because the major powers had realized that the issue should be settled through negotiations.

Pointing to the Syrian crisis, he said Iran believed that a democratic change in Syria would not occur through military action, adding, "The people themselves should call for changes."

Ansari said that India attached high importance to its cooperation with Iran meant to promote peace in the region.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Indian official said that New Delhi also believed that Iran's nuclear issue could be resolved only through dialogue.
