Koodankulam Impasse: Kalam Seeks PM's Intervention

Koodankulam Impasse: Kalam Seeks PM's Intervention

Amidst the stand-off on the Koodankulam nuclear project, former President A P J Abdul Kalam has warned that delay in resolving the crisis would lead to "more anti-nuclear energy sentiments" and urged the Prime Minister to resolve the issue "politically and strategically at the earliest".

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Kalam, a strong advocate of nuclear energy, said blha blah blah.. baanned..

The Russian reactors were originally planned to be set up in Kerala at Kothamangalam or Peringome.

I guess the protests that happened there in the 1980s were genuine public sentiment and not for "political gains".

PS: I am all for KNPP but the Central govt should come clean on certain issues regarding safety and whether power will be supplied to SL from the plant.

Check the amount of money being lost due to this mindless protests, pointing towards the Jaitapur too

The global anti-nuclear lobby is fuelling protests: S K Jain

Yes, but how do you propose to deal with the opposition to nuclear power projects going forward?

All I can say is that the opposition to nuclear plants is fuelled by the global anti-nuclear lobby, so-called environment activists and local politics. To meet this challenge, NPC has launched a massive campaign to reach out to people and provide them with the factual position on NPC's capabilities, safety and the economic performance of its plants in the most transparent manner possible.

The situation can be compared to waking people who are already awake but are wearing tinted glasses supplied by vested interests.

NPC has compiled detailed scientific data on radiation, environment impact and safety — these have been released in the public domain. The data are supplemented by national and international statistics. We are confident that the efforts we have put in will pay off in convincing people with regard to safety and livelihood.

Of course, another challenge is the high expectations of populations near upcoming projects of an improvement in the quality of life and the benefits that they will derive from the plants. We are focusing in a big way on corporate social responsibility (CSR) so that people are assured of the credibility of the provisions we have made, the ultimate aim being inclusive growth.

Did the protests ahead of the commissioning of unit I of Kudankulam come as a surprise?

We had established a great rapport and relationship with the neighbourhood population over the years. Not only did the sudden protests surprise us, they were quite demotivating for the engineers and scientists. All the issues and concerned raised by the villagers have been addressed and fears have been allayed even by the expert panel appointed by the central government.

NPC is expected to incur a revenue loss of Rs 1,300 crore on account of a generation loss of 4,800 million units from Kudankulam by the end of the current fiscal. This is due to the delay in starting generation from the first phase, which was originally scheduled for mid-November, and from the second phase (scheduled for March) owing to the agitation by villagers who are demanding that the project be scrapped.

The company will also have to bear a monthly interest payment of Rs 15 crore on a loan of Rs 6,500 crore from the Russian government and a loss of Rs 120 crore per month. So far an investment of Rs 13,171 crore has been made in the project. And additional investment of about Rs 1,500 crore will be required to complete it. Nearly 6,000 contract workers will have to be remobilised.

In the design of the Kudankulam reactor, many advanced safety features have been deployed to tackle a Fukushima type of disaster. These include a passive heat removal system that ensures the fuel is cooled even if power and cooling water are not available, as was the case in Fukushima. Also, 154 passive recombiners have been installed to avoid the formation of the explosive mixtures inside the containment.

Why the opposition to the Jaitapur project?

There are questions about the proposed site in Maharashtra being in a seismic zone and also the deployment of EPRs, which the protesters claim are not designed from proven technology. EPRs are not experimental reactors or reactors of radical or revolutionary design which are yet to be tested; their design has evolved from well-proven reactors.

As for the project site, it actually has a much greater safety margin since there is no capable fault line within 30 km. The site is situated on a plateau, 25 metres high. Also, we are committed to spending on the betterment of amenities in the villages. We have prepared a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of project-affected people. Let me reiterate that NPC has always been a transparent and cohesive community citizen. Nuclear radiation and environment safety have been given top priority. There won't be any compromise on safety.

I understand the safety part, which was explained by the government already, but little surprised with this SL (Sri Lanka)part, pardon my ignorance, but I don't think it was part of the project, can you point out some reference regarding this.

We are going to face massive coal shortage in next 2 yrs. Many thermal power projects are sitting ducks due to shortage. These nuclear plants should be expedited.

See the amount of money involved in protests, and the countries behind it:

Team lands in Kudankulam to probe NGOs - Times Of India

"Two NGOs run by Tuticorin Archbishop Evan Ambrose received Rs 54 crore in recent months from foreign countries, including the US. We have directed them to submit proper documents. The documents submitted by them were not adequate. So we have sent a special team for a thorough investigation. This is the third round of probe," a senior officer in the home ministry said.

These fkrs must be made an example of. If the GOI is any good, they should make an international incident of this. On the one hand we have the west arm twisting us on climate change and on the other hand we have this despite committing billions of hard earned money into clean energy.

Wake up GOI. Take this up strongly with the instigating countries, there should be some kind of criminal proceedings.

Here comes the communal angel, the things can go hay wire any time
The Hindus gets arrested but others goes scott free

The Hindu : Cities / Madurai : Hindu Munnani activists rough up anti-nuke protesters

The Palayamkottai police have arrested 14 persons, including Hindu Munnani State vice-president V.P. Jayakumar, in this connection. They were remanded in the evening.
"We cannot be cowed down by such undemocratic intimidations, being unleashed by the Congress and Hindu fanatics".
While Mr. Jayakumar was speaking to the waiting reporters, the sports utility vehicle carrying anti-nuke protestors, including Mr. Pushparayan, Rev. Fr. Jesuraj, Dr. Udayakumar and Muhilan entered the Collectorate premises. On seeing them, about 15 Hindu Munnani activists accompanying Mr. Jayakumar charged towards the vehicle and forcibly opened the door to drag Mr. Muhilan out of the vehicle. A group of 16 women, all accompanying the anti-nuke protestors in a separate van, surrounded the Hindu Munnani activists and assaulted them with their footwear.

In the melee, a stone was thrown on the windscreen of the anti-nuke protesters' vehicle, damaging it. Despite the effort of the police, it took nearly five minutes to bring back normality.
Following this development, Dr. Udayakumar and his team left the Collectorate premises after declaring that they would not take part in the talks anymore "as the Centre has started exterminating the anti-nuke protesters".

As they informed their relatives about this incident, church bells in all coastal hamlets of the district around 11.15 a.m. mobilised fishermen from all these villages near the Kamaraj statue close to the main gate of KKNPP site an hour later. A road roko was staged condemning the attack.

'Religious groups should'nt incite anti-nuke protesters' - Rediff.com India News

Referring to the clash between activists of Hindu Munnani and protesters at the fourth round of talks early this week, the minister of state in PMO said, "People rang church bells and invited others to the spot. This is highly regrettable".

"Religious groups should not indulge in such activities," he told reporters at the airport en route to Tiruneveli, where Congress will hold a public meeting today to explain the safety aspects of the project and drum up support for early commissioning of the nuclear plant.

Unless AMMA decides, Koondakulam wont open. And AMMA is out to antagonize MMS and Sonia for because Congress stuck with DMK after the state polls. The only way out is to send the CISF in and open the plant by defying AMMA.
You are right :)

The Hindu : States / Tamil Nadu : Chidambaram seeks support of State government to commission plant

While appealing to the Tamil Nadu Government to cooperate with the Centre in ensuring the early commissioning of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has warned that those acting against the nation's welfare and development with funding of foreign agencies would have to face stern action.
He said that the Union Home Ministry had detected influx of funds from abroad to some non-governmental organisations during the recent investigation and any wrong and fake expenditure by these NGOs would certainly lead to severe legal action against them.
