WORLD VIEW: PAKISTAN ASKED TO SEND 30,000 TROOPS TO SAUDI ARABIA

Pakistan asked to send 30,000 troops to Saudi Arabia

Reports out of Pakistan indicate that Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan to dispatch 30,000 troops to the Kingdom as part of a bilateral defense agreement that's currently being formulated in a flurry of visits and meetings between defense and military officials from the two countries. Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif said:
"In view of current challenges, there is a need to further strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries and a new era of strategic relationship needs to start."
The particular "current challenges" facing Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are the rise of Iran, and Iran's rapprochement with the United States. Both countries fear that Iran will develop nuclear weapons and that, in the end, the West will do nothing to prevent it. Indeed, one of the jobs of the Pakistani troops will be military training for the Saudi army, a function that was formerly performed by American troops.
In 2008, Iran was our bitter enemy, and Saudi Arabia was our close ally. It was in 2008 that I first wrote, based on a Generational Dynamics analysis, that in the coming Clash of Civilizations world war, Iran would be allied with the West, while Saudi Arabia and Pakistan would be allied with China. (See "China 'betrays' Iran, as internal problems in both countries mount" from 2008.)
During the last six years, it's been very interesting to see how Saudi Arabia has moved away from the U.S., while Iran is moving closer to the U.S. The hardline survivors of Iran's 1979 Great Islamic Revolution have been retiring and dying, leaving behind younger generations that like the West, and have no particular animus against Israel. In Pakistan, on the other hand, the people are increasingly hostile to the United States and to India. MEMRI and The National (UAE)

Fear of popular uprising, guarantee against defection of police and military personnel in favor of popular uprising. Status symbol and a premise to fund military of another country without anyone raising an eyebrow.

Also, contingency plan against Iran.

No, if the agreement is materialisd, we will raise 30.000 new troops to be stationed in KSA as the deployment wil probably be signed for a 10, 15 or maybe 20 years. We will not compromise our strenght for the needs of our friends.

They spend big money to buy our polticians and to get licesnces to hunt on wild life in Pakistan (Markhor, Houbara Bustard etc),
They are no bodies' friends but big spenders so almost liked by most corrupt countries.

One cannot just raise troops out of the hat.

It is slow process.

India is raising that many troops for the Chinese border and is still scuppering up the resources from an already woefully short Army.

For Pakistan, raising out of the hat, 30,000 troops will be even more difficult.

Pakistan has a mortifying fear of India and therefore, it cannot deplete its forces on the LC to any 'dangerous' limits.

It is fighting the Taliban in the West and also the Pakistani Taliban within.

Therefore, there is very few that could be taken to be 'extra supernumary'.

However, given the Sharif's family's tie with the fundamentalists, once the US troops withdraws, the 'unemployed' terrorists in Afghanistan can be pushed into Kashmir and rest of India so that the pressure on the Pak military is manageable.

However, that will be dependent on the US troops level that will continue to be within Afghanistan after the drawdown and whether India will actively participate in a military sense to shore up Afghanistan against the Taliban. The issue is still fluid.

If they station 30,000 troops in in SA, the money Pakistan will get from SA in lieu of it will maintain 90,000 troops in Pakistan.
.
There is a Speculation going on other fora , that the F16 purchase is funded by them as part of this deal.

It could very well be true, KSA also paid for the first batch of 6 F-16's that arrived in 1982 and those were new costing $25m each.

This time less money is involved since Jordan itself paid around 130m euro to Belgium and the Netherlands for the entire deal. (64 F-16C/D)

If it is true, then credit must be given to Pakistan as it is a ingenious idea. F-16 from third country funded from the payments ( advance) received from stationing troops in another.

Both Pakistan and Saudi are working towards addressing each other's own insecurities. But, who gains more?
