oh so thats the stone, last time when i was in M'balipuram i just got few snaps pretending that I m atlas holding the earth ....now i know its importance, good one.

Such rocks are hard and are thus visible due to erosion of surrounding softer rocks/soil. This is the most spectacular specimen, but there are many balancing rocks around the world.
