Kolkata: A Karachi-bound cargo vessel from Bangladesh with military hardware and explosives was detained on Friday by the police at Diamond Harbour in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, top police officials said.

The Liberian registered ship, S G Zyat, had set sail from Chittangong in Bangladesh and had anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers, besides a huge quantity of ammunition and smoke bombs in two large containers on board, the police officials said.

"It is a consignment of heavy military supplies meant for a consignee in Karachi. Five tonnes of explosives, a huge quantity of arms and ammunition were found after the police detained the vessel," Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh said.

Describing the incident as 'alarming', he said, "It's surprising why the Pakistani-bound vessel was passing through Indian waters."

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha said "the ship was detained on an intelligence tipoff and was carrying anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers, ammunition and smoke bombs.

He said the Navy, the Coast Guard and the police have cordoned off the ship and were searching it and verifying its documents while the crew was being questioned.

The IGP said senior officers were ascertaining if the consignment was authorised and also whether the ship had changed course, he said.

I concur with ajtr. With all the talks doing the rounds about using air force against the maoists, they are probably preparing themselves with AA guns.

On the other hand, it could also be for some terror organization in pakistan other even Taliban. But why it was consigned from Bangladesh is a mystery to me.

I am pretty sure these all weapons are Chinese made and definitely for Maoists. They will not let us live us in peace .

    liberian angle...

another interesting bit is that ship is registered in liberia. Most oceangoing vessels in liberia are owned by Americans. it is a strategy US has been using since cold war days....
anyway good job by our intelligence agencies, hope they get to the bottom of it.....if it was intented for karachi then its passing through indian waters does not make sense....I think there is more to it then what meets the eye...

Negative. I dont think there is any link between Bdesh and Balochis. Unless it was India itself trying to covertly do it and blame it on Liberia or Bangladesh or whoever.

It's unlikely that the arms are meant for the naxals, As the arms has already reached BD, sending it to red corridor through WB would have been the easier option, as the naxals have already established the strongholds in WB.

This could be a chinese gift to their Pakistani friends, BD and Liberia could be used for plausible deniablity.

The Chinese have a direct route to supply to Pak. They dont have to go via BD.

Highly doubt it. If its Karachi its probably for the Islamists not Sindhis or for that matter even Balochis. (Muhajirs don't like the Bdeshis imho).

Since we received an intelligence tipoff when the ship left Bangladesh means Hasina-Singh partnership is working out. BTW Hasina's biggest detractors are the Islamists and Bdesh-Pak Islamists links are very strong.

Seems like our investments in our satellite and space program are starting to payoff.
