In view of the fact that the alternative to Modi is an inexperienced Rahul Gandhi, Modi may manage to garner a large chunk of the undecided centre-right votes. The Congress needs to ensure that the Muslim vote isn’t divided. Financial promises, the kind the EC wants to prevent, could come in handy there. Weakening the EC is the first step of the process.

Yesterday the debate was on whether India was a banana republic. It is NOT. But steps like these will make it one.

Govt plans to take model code out of EC's purview - Politics - Elections - ibnlive

Electoral reforms that were so painfully achieved after much struggle by visionary leaders like Seshan are in the process of being thrown out one by one for being a obstruction in their electoral "business". :tsk:

This is a trial balloon floated in the media to get a feedback from the public. No way would the Govt. even attempt to pass such a law.
