Oommen Chandy former gunman tries to abduct a woman, bystanders thwart his plan, arrested Kerala Chief minister Oommen Chandy's former gunman Salim Raj, who was suspended for his alleged involvement in the Solar scam, was arrested by Kozhikode North police on September 10 on charges of trying to abduct a woman. One of the six accomplices arrested along with Raj is an accused in the Visa fraud case. He was evading arrest for last three months. The incident has put the chief minister again in trouble as he is already facing the heat of the Opposition for allegedly trying to shield Raj in some land grabbing cases. The incident was brought to light when local people thwarted the attempt of the gang to abduct the women from Thadambatuthazham in Kozhikode. The gang, travelling in a car, intercepted the car in which the woman and her companion was travelling and forced her out and tried to snatch their bag carrying money. As the woman screamed for help, local people gathered, overpowered the gang and handed them over to the police. A case under non-bailable sections 365, 143, 144 and 506 has been registered against Raj and his accomplices. The arrested include Youth Congress Kulasekharamandalam constituency president Irshad, 24 and Youth Congress Karunagappilly Constituency secretary Junaid, 30. Though police maintains that they are clueless about the real motive of behind the attempted kidnap, sources reveal that the gang was trying to abduct the woman for registration of a property owned by her in Kollam. While reacting to the incident, CPI (M) State secretary Pinarai Vijayan said that "Salim Raj gets the courage to run a parallel administration in Kerala as he enjoys the support of chief minister." Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan had earlier nicknamed Raj as "Gun Mon" (Gun Son) of the CM.
