JI issues clarification, J&K tourist association wades in

CM s statement timely factual JKTA Lastupdate:- Mon, 9 Jul 2012 18:30:00 GMT GreaterKashmir.com
Srinagar, July 8: J&K Tourism Alliance today welcomed the statement by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah in which he had blamed national media for blowing the issue of dress code on tourists out of proportion. Chairman, JKTA, G M Dug said the statement by the chief minister is timely and factual and shall hopefully go a long way in removing all sorts of doubts in the tourists planning to visit Kashmir. Pertinently, while absolving the Jama'at-e-Islami (JeI) from having imposed any dress code on tourists in Kashmir, Chief Minister Saturday blamed the national media for blowing the issue out of proportion and distorting the facts "as a dismaying tactics to gain TRP (Television Rating Point)".

"They (JeI) has not said anything like that. It has already made it clear. It is the media that is playing up the issue unnecessarily, only to gain TRP. It does not have any effect on the ground," Omar had told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. Earlier, the Jama'at-e-Islami in a clarification issued on Friday had also blamed the New Delhi-based electronic and print media for what it called "misconstruing" its statement on the dress code.

"The New Delhi-based electronic and print media misconstrued our statement. Neither had it contained any dictate nor any edict regarding any dress code for tourists but just an appeal to them to respect the local ethos," a statement issued here by Jama'at spokesman advocate Zahid Ali had said. Dug said carrying an "unfounded" news by a section of national press has disappointed the Travel & Tourism Fraternity of J&K in general and Kashmir Valley in particular.

He said the "encouraging tourist arrivals to Kashmir since last year has become possible because of the collective efforts put in by J&K government and the stakeholders in tourism trade, besides the all sections of people living in the state." "The statement by the CM has cleared apprehensions of all tourism traders in Kashmir and we hope the tourist arrivals to the state would touch new heights in near future," he said.
