DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi on Thursday made public his succession plan as he tipped son M.K. Stalin to be the next chief of the party.

Talking on the occasion of some PMK workers joining the DMK, Karunanidhi said that he would continue to head the party till his death.

"Till my last breath I will take care of the party work. For the question of who after me, Stalin is sitting here as an answer," Karunanidhi said.

The 88-year-old leader has six children -- sons M.K. Alagiri, M.K. Stalin, M.K. Muthu, M.K. Tamilarasu and daughters Kanimozhi and Selvi.

Political opponents, including some senior DMK leaders, have been critical of the rise of Stalin in the party.

Would be interesting to see the fallout between Azhagiri and Stalin or whether they will patch up together in a cinematic cllimax. If they patch up DMK has a fighting chance in the 2014 elections, if they fall out, I'm afraid TN is all ADMK's...more importantly it will affect the long term political stability of the TN where two parties have alternated every 5 years giving a stable govt as well as acting as a check so that no one gets used to power. More dangerously could give rise to sub-regional parties with caste votebanks which would bring in the devil called coalition politics into TN.

and the fight is now in the open.

How will Karunanidhi hold the party together. Alagiri is not going to sit quite.

So does he have a son to prop up, because Azaghiri's son is on the run in the marble mining case. Or the daughter will come across as a compromise candidate.

will an open war between Stalin & Azhagiri give a chance to the Congress to put one foot back into relevance in TN?

Last I heard, JJ has asked Azhagiri to split DMK and has given a deadline for that, failing which he is to be arrested. Dont know how far it is true, though it does not seem that far off....

MuKha and JJ are the only things holding TN in single piece by the sheer force of their personality

True. I expected that Muka to die within this election, so that his party is split!

The blame rests on us entirely: for not picking up the mantle ourselves. But given the calibre of those that already have, we aren't exactly spoiled for choice.

If DMK is lost as the only viable alternative to ADMK..then we have chaos in our hands. Hope that doesnt happen. We should have two strong parties capable of defeating each other every five years.

O Pannerselvam or some other Sasikala chamcha.
