    Let historians tell history
    TIMES VIEW
Karnataka education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri is right in arguing that proper education should help inculcate self-respect and courage to take on challenges among children. He is wrong in reducing this complex and ambitious goal to a simplistic choice between teaching that Alexander the Great invaded India versus teaching that King Porus defeated Alexander. The minister suggests that we should teach the latter narrative because it will make children swell with pride while the former narrative will breed an inferiority complex. But courage and self-respect are not learnt only from tales of victory.

Curriculum design must remain the domain of teachers, educationists and academics rather than politicians. As with the discipline of history itself, revisions of history textbooks can actually be baro-meters of intellectual health. But we don`t want politicians controlling such rewriting because of the danger of misuse to curtail political dissent.

From colonial missionaries to Marxists, if Indian history has periodically appeared the monopoly of one group or another, the antidote is a free market where revisionists rely on empirical methods, new discoveries, new mastery over source languages etc rather than on preconceived theories. Therefore, till convincing evidence emerges to the contrary, let`s keep teaching our children that Porus put up a bravura struggle but Alexander won the Battle of the Hydaspes. Or let`s introduce them to alternative schools of thought while using the battle to discuss military strategies, geography and politics. Most importantly, let`s not teach children what we ourselves recognise as outright lies, for that will do nothing to make them into proud citizens when they discover the truth. In today`s era of instant global communication, it`s impossible to build walls around knowledge

What is history? E H Carr controversially asked that question in 1961. His answer is worth recalling when we are talking about Porus, Alexander and how we should view them. History, Carr said, is a dialogue between past and present — a process of the historian choosing the facts that suit his worldview and vice versa. It is, in short, a melange of facts and subjective opinion — a relativist endeavour, not an objective, empirical undertaking as historians from the 19th century through the first half of the 20th century had insisted.

View Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri`s suggestion from this perspective, and it doesn't seem so outlandish at all. Alexander's conquests have never been a simple matter of compiling an account of historical events. For millennia, they have been used as a touchstone of western civilisation`s superiority. More, they have been used by successive empires to justify their expansion and the subjugation of native peoples. Following in the footsteps of that conquering hero provided a noble reason for decidedly ignoble acts and policies. In the process, the conventional telling of Alexander's conquests was also used to craft a narrative of civilising western influence — of squabbling, decadent eastern lands subjugated by the discipline and iron will of Alexander`s host. If this is 'history', it is a pernicious one.

So why is Kageri wrong to recommend defanging this narrative? What he is suggesting is no more than what is already done in history textbooks around the world, from the US to Eastern Europe. Choosing to portray the clash between Porus and Alexander from an alternate perspective isn`t lying. It is addressing the toxic legacy of western cultural complacence and the orientalism it spawned — one that we in India regrettably seem to have internalised to an extent such that national self-loathing has become a part of our collective psyche. Anything that redresses this should be welcomed.

Pls read my posts on another similar thread of this site. PUru, A Saraswat Brahmin king, had defeated Alexander and also imposed penalty on him and Gandhar King," Ambhi" and he got the land of Ambhi as a result of that and he set up a new city on that land called PURUSHPUR named after him as a cantonment. That city is now called PESHAWAR. This city is the first city which you see after coming thru Khyber.

Pakistani are the real ghazi they defeated alexander, napoleon,Hitler and Stalin and they are soon coming for India.

Anyway back in 800BC Pakistan (sorry its Bakistan) was the epicenter of the world where all decision was taken and these days are coming back with daily bombblast, crap economy:) if not for the large hearted Pakistani leadership India would lay in ruins and its dirty kaffirs hindus the empire slaves.

Pakistan expansion is so fast that even the US,Russia are sh1t scared they are developing all sorts of new weapons Ballistic missiles superior to the TOPOL M and even better combat system than the Aegis.

@farhann, At the time of alexander, Gandhar was ruled by Hindu princes who were educated at Lumbini and Pataliputra, also Takshilla was a Buddhist school. It is rumored that Chandragupta Maurya was educated there under the tutelage of Chanakya. And you idiot claim that it was Pakistan!! Man I should book a seat in Mental Hospital!!:pound::pound:
