@aschauhan, reams have been written on this topic. However a factual picture is hard to get.

My gut feeling is that LCA Tejas will prove better than JF-17 in both air-air and air-ground missions.

PAF Mirage aircraft crashes near Sonmiani, pilot unharmed

SONMIAMI: A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Mirage aircraft crashed near Balochistan's Sonmiani tehsil Thursday during a routine operational training mission, said a report published on Radio Pakistan.

According to a PAF spokesperson, the pilot is unharmed as he ejected himself from the aircraft safely. There has been no loss of life or damage to property on the ground.

The formation of a board of enquiry has been ordered by the Air Headquarters to investigate the possible cause of the crash.

Within the past year alone, there have been at least three accidents involving Mirage aircrafts.

The most recent took place in Dera Ismail Khan in March 2015, and claimed the lives of two PAF officers. The causes of the crash were a technical fault and bad weather.

In 2014, three separate crash incidents claimed the lives of three pilots and one civilian, while eight other civilians were injured.

Two of them took place in Jhang and Gadap, and involved Mirage jets, while the third, which occurred in June in Karachi's Baldia Town, involved an unidentified training aircraft which exploded mid-air.

They took F16 as the bench mark and are improving their fighter. JF 17 performs well in dogfight I think.

The tail section resembles F16

The "big strake" at the front will give good lift similar to su 30 MKI and F18.

Key is thrust to weight ratio and wing loading(fighters that have to take off from High Himalayan fields with reasonable bobmb loads have to be low wing loading. F-16 , the latest version which participated in MMRCA with far higher TWR than JF-17 failed in this test in LEh as part of MMRCA process.)

China will sell 110 JF-17s Thunder fighter jets to Pakistan, the Economic Times reported.

The Economic Times cites Radio Pakistan as a source, which announced that Beijing will deliver the first patch of 50 planes over the next three years. Additionally, Chinese officials told local Chinese media that the total number of fighter aircraft delivered will be 110, although there is no set delivery schedule for the remaining 6o planes.

The apparent reason for the new delivery from China is that Pakistan's military aircraft industry cannot keep up with its air force's demand for new planes amid an intensifying campaign against Taliban insurgents in the country.

IHS Jane's Defence Weekly summarizes the characteristics of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex/Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (PAC/CAC) JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft:

Developed jointly by China (where it is designated the FC-1) and Pakistan, the JF-17 Thunder made its maiden flight in 2004. Powered by a single Russian-designed but Chinese-built Klimov RD-93 (RD-33 derivative) turbofan, it has a top speed of Mach 1.6 (at altitude); a radius-of-operation of 648 n miles (1,200 km) ("¦)

It has seven underwing/fuselage hardpoints, and is equipped with an internal GSh-23-2 twin-barrel cannon. Weapon options include up to four PL-5, -7, -8 or -9 short-range air-to-air missiles (AAMs) or four PL-12/SD-10B medium-range AAMs; two C-802A anti-ship missiles; two anti-radiation missiles; five 500 kg bombs; twin launchers for up to eight 250 kg, MK-20, GBU-12 or anti-runway bombs; single 1,000 kg bomb or GBU-10; or up to three mission pods.

The plane is manufactured at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) west of Islamabad, which has the capacity to produce 25 aircraft per year, according to the head of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Air Marshal Javaid Ahmad. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) already received 50 Block I planes.

A more advanced version (with a new air-to-air refuelling probe, enhanced oxygen system and improved electronic countermeasures system) will also soon enter service, stated the Air Marshall in December 2014, adding that "We will hand over 16 Block-II JF-17s to the PAF every year." IHS Jane's Defence Weekly reported that the first Block II JF-17 made its maiden flight on 9 February.

In December 2014, Russia and Pakistan also announced a defense cooperation agreement, which stipulated that Islamabad would buy the JF-17 engine – the Russian Klimov RD-93 – directly from Moscow, instead of acquiring the hardware vicariously via China. Pakistan and China are also planning to export the plane (see: "Pakistan and China May Finally Have a JF-17 Buyer"), but the recent announcement calls into question the true manufacturing capacity of Pakistan's military aircraft industry.

PARIS: JF-17 wins first export order

By: GREG WALDRON PARIS

The Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex JF-17 Thunder fighter has secured its first confirmed export deal.

“A contract has been signed with an Asian country,” says Air Commodore Khalid Mahmood, the Pakistan air force officer who leads sales and marketing efforts for the type.

Citing client sensitivities, he declined to specify the customer and the number of aircraft it will obtain. Deliveries will start in 2017.

He says that sales for the JF-17, which is targeted for developing nations, have been held up by political turmoil in several Middle Eastern countries.

The aircraft is making its flying debut at this year’s air show. Pakistan’s air force has brought three examples this year. One will appear on the static display, one will appear in the flying display, and the third will serve as a backup.

The JF-17 contingent at Paris this year is 80 strong, representing a significant marketing push. Khalid says the show is a good venue for meeting prospective customers from French speaking countries.

He says that 11 countries are looking at the type, which mirrors previous comments made by Chinese defence export agency Catic, which also markets the aircraft, and Pakistan air force officials.

Khalid also provided an update of Pakistan’s induction of the type. So far, 54 examples have been delivered. The first 50 were originally delivered in a Block I configuration, and these are in the process of being updated to a Block II standard. The Block II configuration features improved avionics and better software, and adds a fixed air-to-air refuelling probe.

An additional 46 aircraft will be delivered in the Block II configuration. A subsequent 50 aircraft, which will push Pakistan’s fleet to 150 examples, will have a Block III configuration. These will all be delivered by the end of 2018.

The aircraft’s developers are still working out the specifications of the Block III aircraft, but upgrades could include an active electronically scanned array (AESA) or Passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar, says Khalid. The configuration could also include an infrared search and track (IRST) sensor, stations under the forward fuselage for various pods, and expanded precision weapons capabilities.

A two-seat variant is also planned, which will serve mainly as a trainer. Pakistan produces 58% of the airframe and China 42%. The JF-17 is powered by a single Klimov RD-93 engine.

Paris Air Show 2015: JF-17 fighter flying with indigenous Chinese turbofan
Richard D Fisher Jr, Paris - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

Key Points
  • Chinese officials at the Paris Air Show have said flight-testing of a new indigenous engine for the JF-17 Thunder is under way
  • Officials also confirmed that the Sino-Pakistani-developed aircraft had achieved its first international sale, although they did not disclose the customer
A senior Chinese aviation official has revealed that the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation FC-1/JF-17 fighter co-developed with Pakistan has been test-flown with a new Chinese medium-thrust turbofan engine.

Li Yuhai, an executive vice president with the Aviation Industries Corporation of China (AVIC), told IHS Jane's at the Paris Airshow that a new Chinese turbofan for the J-17 has been "under testing," has completed "lab tests", and that "flight testing is in progress". He also said that the new engine would have a thrust slightly greater than the 8.7-ton thrust of the JF-17's current Klimov RD-93 turbofan.

At a joint Sino-Pakistani press conference on 15 June, Li also said progress was being made on the twin-seat version of the JF 17.

Pakistani sources at Paris confirmed that a JF-17 has been flying with the new Chinese turbofan, which could be revealed publicly "very soon". There is a suggestion the engine could be named 'WS-17' to complement the JF-17b, but officials did not provide any further performance indicators.

One Chinese medium-thrust turbofan programme long reported as slated for the FC-1/JF-17 has been called the WS-13 and reportedly flew in 2010. It has been developed with help from Russia's Klimov and is reportedly based on its RD-33 turbofan.

While previous reports mentioned development difficulties with the WS-13, the willingness of Chinese officials to talk publicly about this engine suggests a higher level of confidence in its prospects.

At the 2008 Airshow China in Zhuhai the Chengdu Gas Turbine Research Institute revealed it was developing a 9.5 ton-thrust turbofan and showed a possible model at the same show. It is not known if this is the engine that is now being test flown on a JF-17.

Despite the news of the new engine testing, Pakistani officials at Paris said they remain satisfied with the Klimov RD-93. In 2010 China obtained a Russian commitment to meet a potential requirement of up to 500 RD-93 engines to support the JF-17 programme. This figure would support Pakistan's requirements for up to 275 JF-17s plus international exports.

A Pakistani official also confirmed reports that the first export contract for the JF-17 has been signed. The official would only say that the contract had been signed in the first half of 2015 but would not name the customer.

Pakistani officials say they are having "serious" discussions with 11 countries, including Argentina, which a source confirmed is interested in co-producing the JF-17.

In its first appearance at Paris, the JF-17 is also accompanied by two new weapon options. One is the C-705KD missile, an IIR/TV-guided ground-attack version of the 140-170 km-range C-705 that was revealed at the 2012 Zhuhai airshow. A Pakistani source said up to four C-705KDs could be carried by the JF-17.

The second new weapon displayed with the JF-17 for the first time is the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) CM-102 anti-radiation missile. Revealed at the 2014 Zhuhai show, it has an advertised range of 100 km. A Pakistani source noted that other versions could have 50% to 70% further range.

Making its second international appearance was the CASIC CM-400AKG Mach-5 speed ground attack missile. A Pakistani official noted it did not have "passive" guidance, which might enable attacks against mobile targets such as ships, but has inertial navigational system/GPS guidance for attacking fixed targets.

Asked whether the CM-400AKG was in Pakistani service an official responded with a pointed "no comment".

Pakistan has produced 50 Block 1 versions of the JF-17 and has started production of 50 Block 2 versions. Officials said that discussions are underway with China for a Block 3 version that will include an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that is being developed by the Nanjing Research of Electronic Technology (NRIST).

Pakistani officials noted it could be based on NRIST's AESA radar developed for the Chengdu J-10B fighter but would not confirm any relation between the two systems. The Block 3 JF-17 will also incorporate a helmet-mounted display and a possible internal infrared search and tracking (IRST) system.
