CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has called for a referendum among Sri Lankan Tamils on the formation of a 'Separate Eelam' (Tamil land) within Sri Lanka. The referendum, she said, should be held for the sake of their future welfare. "The referendum should be conducted among Tamils in Sri Lanka and other displaced Tamils across the world. A resolution should also be adopted in the UN security council in this regard," she told the assembly.

Political parties in Tamil Nadu have been vying with each other to raise the pro-Tamil rhetoric. While, the ruling AIADMK's latest demand is seen as a move to take centre stage on the Eelam issue, the DMK decision to quit the Union government and the UPA for its failure to get a stronger resolution moved in the UNHRC against Sri Lanka, is also seen as political one-upmanship.

Moving a resolution in the House on Wednesday, chief minister Jayalalithaa said there should be an impartial, international and independent probe for the alleged war crimes and genocide in Sri Lanka. "Based on this investigation, those found guilty should be tried in the international court of law and punished," she said. Urging the Centre to stop calling Sri Lanka a friendly nation, the chief minister said the Congress-led UPA government should impose economic sanctions until the Sri Lankan government stops atrocities against Tamils living there.

Jayalalithaa urged students, who have been protesting against alleged war crimes against Sri Lanka, to give up their agitation keeping in mind the state government's efforts to secure victory on the issue. "Our efforts will fructify very soon", she said.

How much part of TN will participate in this proposed referendum?

India should have nothing to do with such demands.

It doesn't get worse than this. It invites similar intervention by others in our affairs. It is only making it more difficult for the Indian govt to conduct foreign affairs.

If she is making such statements, it is likely that it is politically motivated. I am willing to bet she cares less about SL Tamils than she does about her political career. Now, the question is, why is she making such a statement? Are there enough takers for such emotional jingoism?

One of the shared motive of both DMK, AIADMK is to keep BJP/Cong out of TamilNadu for sure.

In the entire history of the state, no national party has come even second... or maybe when the DMK was only one, Congress might have been second.. after the split, it has been one-two finish for Dravida parties Congress/BJP coming a distant third. No quarrels with that, though.

Honourable Chief Minister Chelvi Jayalalitha has become not only the leader of Tamil Nadu but the conscience and voice of Tamils all over the world.

I really want to know how many times she has stepped out of Poes Garden to see the plight of Lankan Tamil refugees in TN.

Voice of Tamils my foot. She is just playing politics. Wants 20 seats in te next Lok Sabha elections so that she can get plum ministries and dictate terms.

when paki players were not allowed to play in IPL, it was of national interests
but when all an all party resolution was passed in TN assembly to gather the attention of International community to get justice regarding the genocide it becomes a ethnically chauvinistic jingoistic politically colored regime

    what an India:rofl:

T.N. Assembly demands referendum on Eelam by unanimous vote

T.N. Assembly demands referendum on Eelam by unanimous vote

Stop calling Sri Lanka a "friendly nation," resolution moved by Jayalalithaa urges Centre

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday urged the Centre to move a resolution in the United Nations Security Council seeking various measures against Sri Lanka, including a referendum on creation of Eelam.

Considering the future of Sri Lankan Tamils, such a referendum should be held among Tamils living in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, says the resolution, which the House adopted unanimously through a voice vote after it was moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Since 1996, DMK has been sharing power at centre. Both the parties have been in NDA at one time or the other. Both have fought LS elections with Cong. They are good changeling.

PS: nrj and chacko are both behaving as Hurriet and MSY rolled into one.
