They are trying to save Secularism.

TMC is happy because TMC is the major benefactor of this BJP vs TMC drama. Secular Bangalis will vote for TMC, so will the Secular people. BJP will come distant second.

KOLKATA: If the Burdwan blast and the allied terror links with select madrassas had made Muslims feel insecure, a section among the minorities is trying to overcome it with a rare aggression and combative mood the city had seldom witnessed.

Thousands of Muslims marched the city streets on Saturday afternoon shouting slogans against the "hegemony of the sankhaguru sampraday (majority community)", a day before BJP president Amit Shah addresses a party rally in front of Victoria House on Sunday.

The rally on Saturday went out of the hands of the state police who stood mute spectators to the mayhem and violence, fuelling speculation that the police had to stay inert under directions from above.

Even as their leaders called it a religious congregation, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind leader Siddiqullah Chowdhury was keen on translating the huge religious support into votes in the 2016 Assembly polls. "Madrassas have come under radar after the Burdwan blast. I would like to say that all madrassas are not terror factories. If asked by the government, we will see to it that these centres of religious education are not being misused. But we won't tolerate intimidation and torture. Governments should stop all this," said Chowdhury.

Without naming the Trinamool Congress, the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind leaders warned Muslims against political parties trying to monopolize their support. "No political party should try to monopolize the minority votes. Trinamool and BJP are fomenting trouble in a bid to polarize the electorate. Look at this historic congregation. If we can consolidate our strength, we can do many things in the coming 2016 Assembly polls," Chowdhury said, eye on the 75-odd assembly seats where Muslims are a force to reckon with.

While Chowdhury was speaking on the dais, his supporters on Mayo Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Bentinck Street led the charge against the police and a section of the media, sparking negative reactions among those held up in the jam for hours. Motorists cursed the police, while unarmed policemen including sergeants moved around in the mayhem without taking any initiative to control the mob. The underlying theme was nothing else than "minority appeasement".

"We will see what you all do to people coming to the rally tomorrow," a pedestrian screamed. BJP leader Tathagata Roy was then coming down Bentinck Street.

"I was standing close to a procession coming down Bentinck Street. The rallyists were evidently hostile. They shouted slogans against the hegemony of the majority community, and the body language was equally aggressive. I came to know that they beat up policemen and also crew of the 24 Ghonta television channel. And the leaders had in no way tried to quell the commotion," the BJP leader said.

Chowdhury was apologetic. "Such things never happened in our rallies before. There was no such instance at the meeting ground at Sahid Minar. I suspect that some people came to our rally to discredit us. I have told the deputy commissioner and joint commissioner of police to provide video footage of the unruly people. I will identify them. I won't mind if the police take steps against them," Chowdhury said.

Whatever his version, such violent showdown is likely to heighten the underlying tension along religious lines. When asked if the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind rally and the pain it gave to citizens will boost participation in the BJP's rally on Sunday, Tathagata Roy said: "We will maintain peace and disciple in our rally tomorrow. I wouldn't like people to join our rally for the wrong reason," Roy said.

Showdown On Streets, Shivers For City - The Times of India

A public meeting called by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH) to protest “the campaign against madrasas” saw the protesters clashing with police and damaging several vehicles and one of the oldest clubs in central Kolkata after a rumour spread about a youth from the minority community allegedly suffering grievous injuries in an accident during the rally.

The clash left 11 police personnel, including two assistant commissioners, injured even as the traffic management collapsed resulting in bottlenecks at several locations causing inconvenience to the commuters.

However, as per the police, no accident was recorded in central Kolkata when the JUH meeting was being held. As per the police, following rumours about the alleged accident, a mob of protesters started pelting stones at police personnel deployed there apart from damaging several PCR vehicles. The mob also damaged damaged the Dalhousie Athletic club.

Please don't use the word secularism out of its context. They are anti BJP which doesn't make them secular.

Peaceful people protesting in a peaceful manner. Lakhs of such peaceful men converged in the heart of the city and brought it to a halt on a busy day. Had they gone out of control, with so many of them, it could have been total mayhem.

When it comes to Muslim mobs and Trinamool goons, Police have to run for cover instead of taking them on. This has become the norm.

Aren't they Jammat chaps cute in their ways? ;)

BJP had to go to court to get their rally approved and these chaps have had a rally without any permission from anyone.

What has the TMC Govt to say over this?

They even parked their lorries on the greens of the Maidan! This is actually really horrid that hey are ruining the sole green patch in Kolkata and that is against the law.

Amit Shah in yesterday's rally at Kolkata indicated how the Sharda money is linked with the Burdwan Blast.

Today, a TMC Minister has gone to Parui where there was a few days ago a clash between Muslim supporters of BJP and TMC to woo back the Muslims supporters of BJP.

TMC is in a big way running scared that even the Muslims are moving away to the BJP and that can upset Mamata's electoral apple cart.

Col Anil Kaul in a TV Debate raised an interesting issue - have you noticed that Bengal ravaged by Maoists during the Left regime became Maoist free immediately after TMC was voted to power.

So, he indicated indirectly the connection of TMC, without saying it is so many words with the anti national elements.

It is for the IB and NIA to follow the lead and find out as far as I am concerned.
