The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will set up an exclusive intelligence wing to generate information along the Sino-Indian frontier. So far, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are the two central paramilitary forces which have exclusive units to gather intelligence for operational purposes.
Indian Government has decided to deploy ITBP along the 3,488-kilometres of the China border as the primary vigil force. For the purpose, government has allocated approximately Rs 3,000 crore for modernisation and expansion of the ITBP. Expansion will include increase in manpower for 13 additional battalions (about 13,000 more personnel). The current count of ITBP is around 45000 men.
The paramilitary ITBP was set up on October 24, 1962 for security along the India's border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. ITBP began with just 4 battalions. Susequently, the force has seen deployments under UN Peace Keeping flag, Indian Missions in Afghanistan and even internal security.
