A communication spacecraft, the South Asia Satellite, which will serve India and six of its regional neighbours, is set to lift off from Sriharikota off Andhra Pradesh on Friday evening.

Some bare information on this regional diplomatic overture apart, mystery shrouded the civil mission until late on the eve of the launch. The 2230-kg spacecraft will be launched on a GSLV, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s medium-lift rocket, numbered F09.

A normally transparent ISRO has been unusually reticent about a less than routine launch. The time of the launch has a cryptic clue - one must infer it as 4.57 p.m. from the duration of the countdown. There will be no live telecast. Brochures that would be routinely released about five days ahead of a mission are still to be uploaded on the ISRO website.

Three earlier exceptions

Mediapersons will not cover a launch for the first time in a decade; normally ISRO would ferry about 200 reporters from different places to Sriharikota to witness a launch.

Among the three earlier exceptions was the launch of of Israel’s spy satellite, TecSAR, on a PSLV in January 2008.

I thought it was a bug in their site which did not carry the brochure. No live telecast is kind of a bummer. Its not like live telecast would aid in sabotage. I wonder what the reason is.

GSLV-F09 / GSAT-9
The launch of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09) carrying GSAT-9, is scheduled on Friday, May 05, 2017.

GSLV-F09 mission is the eleventh flight of GSLV and its fourth consecutive flight with the indigenous Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS).

GSAT-9 is a Geostationary Communication Satellite with the objective to provide various communication applications in Ku-band with coverage over South Asian countries. GSAT-9 is configured around the ISRO’s standard I-2K bus, with lift off mass of 2230 kg. The main structure of the satellite is cuboid in shape built around a central cylinder with a mission life of more than 12 years.

GSLV-F09 will be launched from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota.

ISRO Develops "Solar Calculator" Android App
Computation of solar energy potential is essential to select the locations for solar photovoltaic (PV) thermal power plants. The use of remote sensing observations from geostationary satellite sensors is ideal to capture space-time variability of surface insolation. An android App for the computation of solar energy potential has been developed by Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, Ahmedabad at the behest of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India. It is a very useful tool for installation of PV solar panels for tapping solar energy.

The App provides monthly / yearly solar potential (in kWh/m2) and minimum / maximum temperature at any location. It also displays the location on the satellite image and provides azimuth / elevation angles as well as day length over different time periods in a year.

Following are the major features of the App:

  • The App provides solar energy potential (in kWh/m2) at any given location
  • The required location can be keyed in or can be obtained through GPS
  • It gives monthly and yearly solar potential processed using Indian Geostationary Satellite data (Kalpana-1, INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR). It also offers monthly minimum and maximum temperature to calculate realistic solar potential
  • Location is displayed on image with satellite data in the background
  • It also provides azimuth and elevation angles, and day length over different time periods in a year.
  • Obstruction of sunlight due to terrain is also calculated using Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
  • It also suggests optimum tilt angle for solar PV installation
  • This App needs internet connection to calculate the results
  • Complete report can be saved as a PDF file

'Naughty Boy' GSLV puts 'South Asia' satellite into orbit

BENGALURU: The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F09 (GSLV-F09) on Friday successfully launched India's gift to South Asia - the Geostationary communication satellite-9 (Gsat-9) - into a Geostationary orbit, also making the it the first Indian satellite to use an electric propulsion.

The launch took place from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR) in Sriharikota and the achieved orbit is very close to the intended one. This was only the second operational flight of the GSLV- which had earned the dubious nickname 'Naughty Boy' for its poor track record- with Cryogenic Upper Stage(CUS).

The Gsat-9, which will have a footprint that extends all over South Asia, marks India's first 'space diplomacy' endeavour allowing six neighbouring countries to use the benefits of the satellite without having to spend anything on the project. India has incurred the entire cost - estimated to be Rs 450 crore (including launch costs and other variables), of which just the satellite cost is Rs 235 crore. India will now have a secure hotline with the six nations that can be used during disaster management and other emergencies.

The 12 transponders in the Ku band that the satellite has put into space will provide an array of applications and services-television, Direct-to-Home (DTH), tele-education, telemedicine, Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) and disaster management support-to India's neighbours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, just weeks after he took the office in 2014, had announced this major project that was initially conceived as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) satellite. He had said that this was India's priceless gift to her neighbours.

However, Pakistan, whose proposal to invest and be part of the project from the planning stage was turned down by India as it was PM Modi's brainchild, opted out of the project citing security concerns.

So does it means, chinkis cannot use there asat weapons on this satellite because this satellite is owned by 5 other nations, and even of they do does that mean they are destroying assets of other countries, does that means we have deployed a satellite with effective deterrence against chinki asata?.

Chinkies will prefer to destroy our main communication satellites plus military satellites and gagan system.

But they won't have enough ASAT missiles.

In war time we can launch hundreds of small satellites per launch to reestablish our communication that capability we have already proved. So Chinese ASAT against India is as effective as a sitting duck:biggrin2::biggrin2:

South Asia Satellite : check.. So next is GSLV Mk-III next month, and it will be a success too.. just curious to know what are the remaining planned mission of ISRO to be done this year.. can anyone pls give a list of this?

THIRUVANNANTHAPURAM: After the successful launch of the South Asian Satellite GSAT 9 on board GSLV-Mk II, scientists of ISRO centres feel that it was a proud moment to be part of India's space diplomacy initiative and hear praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Now, the team of scientists and engineers are focused on the next mission - the launch of GSLV-MK-III boosted with fully indigenous cryogenic engine by this May end.

"In the previous GSLV launches, some parts of the indigenous cryogenic upper stage (CUS) engine were procured from Russia, but this GSLV-Mark II had more indigenous CUS with propellant acquisition system and umbilicals. This launch was first in terms of use of electric propulsion," Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) director Dr Sivan told TOI on reaching here after the successful mission.

GSLV-Mark II was the eleventh flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and the fourth consecutive success achieved by GSLV carrying indigenously-developed CUS, the scientists said.

"After the launch of GSLV-Mk on Friday, now we are focussed on the developmental flight of GSLV-Mk III (D1) which will launch GSAT-19, a communication satellite with advanced spacecraft technologies including bus subsystem experiments in Electrical propulsion System and indigenous Lithium ion battery," GSLV Mk III project director G Ayyappan said.

This GSLV-MK III rocket with totally indigenous CUS will weigh about 3.5 tons as against the GSLV-MK II vehicle with indigenous CUS stage weighing 2.2 tons, he said.
Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) director S Somnath earlier told TOI that the GSLV-Mk III is set to launch the communication satellite GSAT-19 by May end and then PSLV-C38 for the launch of earth observation satellite Cartosat-2E by June first week.
"We could work towards keeping up the promise made by the Prime Minister in offering this South Asian satellite as a gift to the neighbouring SAARC countries, except Pakistan which had opted out," said a scientist at VSSC here.

FO explains why Pakistan quit Saarc satellite project

ISLAMABAD: India’s unwillingness to allow other Saarc countries to participate in the development of a Saarc satellite made Pakistan quit the project.

Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria, while explaining Pakistan’s absence from the South Asian Satellite launched by India on Friday, said: “As India was not willing to develop the project on a collaborative basis, it was not possible for Pakistan to support it as a regional project under the umbrella of Saarc.”

Mr Zakaria recalled that India had at the 18th Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit in Kathmandu in 2014 had offered to gift Saarc satellite to member countries, but it turned out that India wanted to build, launch and operate the satellite all by itself except for registering it with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a Saarc Satellite.

“Pakistan, which has its own space programme at an advanced level, was ready to share its expertise and technological know-how and was keen to participate in the project but India’s solo flight caused Pakistan to opt out of the project,” the spokesman said.
