JERUSALEM, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Israeli forces arrested 19 Palestinians because of suspected terrorism offenses and other crimes in raids across the West Bank, an army spokeswoman said on Monday.

Five of the 19 suspects are Hamas activists who were arrested early Sunday in villages near the cities of Nablus and Ramallah, she said.

Another three were detained in Hebron and Tulkarm, while others in refugee camps and villages in the vicinity of Ramallah, Bethlehem and Jenin, the spokesperson added.

She said that the five detainees affiliated with Hamas were arrested because of suspected involvement in so-called "popular terror," namely hurling of stones and petrol bombs at vehicles and other acts of violence.

She added that the rest are suspected of "illegal activities" against civilians and Israeli forces, and all the suspects are in custody for questioning.

Israeli security forces can often get information from the arrested West Bank Palestinians that would ultimately lead to the capture of militants plotting attacks against Israeli targets in the West Bank and Israel.
