A huge explosion has rocked a Syrian Air Force installation southwest of the capital Damascus, after Israeli military aircraft carried out an airstrike on a designated target at the site.

The aerial attack struck the Mezzeh Military Airport, less than eight kilometers southwest of Damascus, early on Friday, and caused a large fire but no casualties.

Eight loud explosions were heard after the Israeli airstrike that reportedly targeted an arms depot at the military installation.

The development came more than a month after the Israeli military fired missiles from within the occupied Palestinian territory at the same Syrian army airbase outside Damascus.

“At 3:00 a.m., the Israeli enemy fired several surface-to-surface missiles from inside occupied territory,” Syria’s official news agency SANA reported in December, citing a military source. The report said the Israeli missiles set off a blaze at the targeted site.

The Syrian military source called the missile attack against the Mezzeh airbase part of “desperate attempts by the Israeli enemy to support terrorist groups and raise their low morale.”

The Mazzeh airbase reportedly hosts the headquarters of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate.

A Mezzah military air facility was struck by several explosions near the Syrian capital of Damascus. Israeli warplanes directed fire at an ammunitions hub, producing an enormous explosion, according to Syrian state TV.
"Rockets strike at Mezzeh Military airport in Damascus minutes ago," Hadi al-Bahra, former president of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces said on Twitter in the early hours of Friday, posting pictures of the explosions. The blasts were reportedly caused by heavy bombing conducted by Israel, local activists and journalists reported on Twitter.

The airport is a major strategic asset used by Syrian elites, military officials and troops as a transit complex.

— Hadi Albahra (@hadialbahra) January 12, 2017
The Syrian government also used the airport as a military outpost to launch artillery shells at former rebel-held areas in the suburbs of Damascus.

— Ibrahim Joudeh (@Ibra_Joudeh) January 12, 2017
The death toll from the attacks has yet to be determined, according to a journalist on the ground. The airstrikes "may have taken out Syrian commanders," according to Georgetown Center for Security Studies' John Arterbury.

Syrian state TV says that the Israeli military conducted the airstrike. The Israeli military declined comment.

Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber killed seven people and left many more wounded.

I wonder what would happen if one of Israel's neighbors randomly bombed an Israeli Military Airport and claimed it had to do it for its national security interests...

Neither Hamas nor Hezbollah have fired rockets into Israel for a long time. There's been relative peace deespite Israel sending air raids to bomb Syria once in a while.

The Syrian armed forces haven't "fired rockets" into Israel, yet they are being bombed anyway. What would you call that if not naked ILLEGAL aggression?

Bullshit. Desperate times for amereekans.
Israel trying to do to Syria what Saddam tried with Israel with his rubbish scuds - provoke a retaliation.
In this case to get Yankee boots on ground if even a single missile takes off from Syria aimed at tel aviv.
Old trick assholes, ain't gonna work this time. BOSSMAN@kremlin is in charge here.

Minus US veto, those balls would be deep fried in Arab oil and their "settlements" buried under desert sand.

Generally IDF carried out such Air strikes or even SF raids whenever they have the intelligence on HVT or weapon systems which could threaten Israeli forces.

So if such weapons ATGM, SAM etc are stored in ammo dump and about to be distributed to Jihadis and Militia then that military installations are susceptible to Israel strike even if there is a risk of collateral damage.

These are preemptive strikes.

Syria is a war zone. Israel did what it had to do. Their is no govt in control in Syria.
It's more like a land without state right now.

Actually US remain neutral in early Israeli conflicts. Most of the Israeli weaponsand Jets were French origin. Yet they defeated the combined Mullah Army not once but more than twice.

Even during the early days of Yom Kippur war Israeli didn't got the military Aid. It is only after Israeli decided to use Nukes (Samson's option) on Arab nations that US send military Aid and hardware to fight the war.

Israelis won their war by their spirit of freedom, political will, their tactics and legendary Commander such as Arial Sharon, Mordachai "Motta" Gur and Moshe Dayan etc etc

So it is a loser Musalman argument that it's because US that Israeli won their war against combined Arab armies. This is also a common tendency among Muslaman who believes in conspiracy all over the world.

Ask any Paki Mullah why they lost in 1971 and be ready to hear all kind of BS and excuses. Forget about Siachen, 1965 and Kargil.

There are so many fractions operating in Syria. Who knows what was the real target of Israeli attack. Plus there is presence of hezebulla and company in assad camp.

Actually in 2017 ISIS, Iraqi sunni militia, FSA and ex Iraqi army elements etc overlap each other.

ISIS Mosul stronghold has ex Iraqi Republican guard troops who were loyal to Saddam now fighting the same Iraqi army they once served with honor.

Israel feel insecure after what Obama just let the UN resolution pass. May be the strike was to prevent shipment of weapons to hamas, but it is Israel they do not care about international law. It is not the first time the have done such strikes and I hope there is no major diplomatic fall out due to this strike

The problem is that they bombed a government occupied area . They previous bombed some ISIS occupied area and once bombed a Hezbollah convey but still if Israel had some concern then there are diplomatic channels to address it, bombing should be last not the first option.
