Israel worried as the administration woos India, its top defense market

Officials said the Defense Ministry and major companies have been closely monitoring the U.S. marketing drive in India.

In November, President Barack Obama met Indian leaders and was said to have reached an understanding that could result in billions of dollars worth of U.S. defense sales to New Dehli.

"Obama is embracing the Indian prime minister and $40 to $50 billion worth of deals are being wrapped up in one shot," Israel Aerospace Industries president Itzhak Nissan said. "We don't have such personalities."

India has been reported to be Israel's largest defense market, with more than $1 billion in annual sales. IAI was said to dominate the Israeli defense presence in New Dehli and was concluding a $1.1 billion project of airborne early-warning and control aircraft to the Indian Air Force.

Officials said IAI and other major defense companies have been urging the Defense Ministry to ease export controls. They said the new controls, demanded by the United States in 2005, were hampering marketing and technology transfer required to maintain exports.

"Free competition is the key to success," Nissan told an aerospace conference on Nov. 15. "Regulations must be employed for special cases and not to hamper initiative."

Nissan and other defense chiefs said the United States and European Union would intensify marketing in third countries amid the reduction of defense budgets at home. They said this would require coordination between Israeli companies as well as a rapid licensing process.

"The main problem is coping with the giants," Nissan said. "They are becoming very hungry."

I dont think Our defence deals with USA will hurt Israel.Till now all weapons we are purchasing from USA are not built in Israel. Israel is more like small and critical components supplier to us . Only complete system that they can sell us is Arrow system but thats financed by USA and hence Veto power. All new projects awith Israel companies are Joint ventures and will not affect them .

Israel is the favorite son of the U.S. Many of the top lawmakers and politicians in the U.S. are Jewish. American Jews support Israel heavily and have a strong lobby that pushes American politicians and media to support them as well. Israel has over 200 nuclear warheads at their disposal. There is no one in the Middle East that can challenge Israeli military strength.

Most Americans are Christians and many Christians prefer that Jerusalem and the holy lands in Israel be in the hands of Jews instead of Muslims. Plus, with American need for oil, Israel acts as its soldier to protect the flow of oil coming without any obstacles. America takes out any opposition in the middle east, like Saddam Hussein. Iran is under U.S. embargo currently.

While India pays for military arms from the U.S., Obama just gave Israel a 3 billion dollar deal to proceed with peace talks with Palestinians.

USA plans to sell systems. they will not be transferring technologies .While with Israelis we do many co developments . we both gain from it . I am sure USA will not give access to state of the art defence related technologies. Israel is only option for us to get access to somecutting edge technology in defence. USA donot give cutting edge technology to even closest of its allies and we are far away from being an ally.

Israeli guns, assualt rifles, radars, air borne early warning systems, air borne recconisence UAV's and attack drones are the best in the world. We need these very urgently to refurbish our ground forces to gain superiority in the region. INDIA DEFENCE FORCES and the DEFENCE MINISTRY must also focus on these things along with the deals which is going on with the US. Israel is an important DEFENCE PARTNER like the SOVIET(now RUSSIA) in the 21st century and in the coming years also. We can get good guns , assualt rifles and artillery from the Israelis. They are one of the best in these kind equipments.

US has agreed to open doors for its defence sales to India at the cost of CISMOA ... something India will never sign. Hence the purchase of US arms is limited. Israel has nothing to worry about.

No one has to worry about their business. India is becoming such a vast market that there is a place for everyone in it.

Israel worried over US defence sales to India: Report

Israel is concerned over losing its largest defence market to close ally US, which has reached an understanding with India that could result in billions of dollars of American defence sales to New Delhi, a media report has said.

"(US President Barack) Obama is embracing the Indian Prime Minister and 40 to 50 billion USDs worth of deals are being wrapped up in one shot," Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) President Itzhak Nissan told Middle East Newsline adding, "We don't have such personalities."

Israeli officials said the Defence Ministry and major companies have been closely monitoring the US marketing drive in India.

IAI and other major Israeli defence companies have been urging the Defense Ministry to ease export controls arguing that the new controls, demanded by the United States in 2005, were hampering marketing and technology transfer required to maintain exports.

"Free competition is the key to success," Nissan told an aerospace conference on this week adding, "Regulations must be employed for special cases and not to hamper initiative."

The IAI President and other defence chiefs said that the United States and European Union would intensify marketing in third countries amid the reduction of defence budgets at home.

In order to survive amid intense competition they argued that there is a need for proper coordination between Israeli companies as well as a rapid licensing process.

"The main problem is coping with the giants," Nissan said noting, "They are becoming very hungry."

Barack during his trip to India earlier this month has reached an understanding that could boost US defence sales to New Delhi, the report said.

India is Israel's largest defence market accounting for almost fifty percent of Israeli sales.

IAI dominates the Israeli defence presence in New Delhi and is about to conclude a 1.1 billion USDs project of supplying three phalcon airborne early-warning systems to the Indian Air Force.

The main area where USA is blocking Israel is in our BMD program, Israel has not received the ok to sell arrow-3 to us. USA has hopes of selling patriot and THAAD possibly?? other than this almost all big ticket deals have passed thru, if Israel had a plane in the MRCA it would have also been a strong contender.

neither does Israel transfer state of the art tech to us....eg...::AWACS....i mean most of state of the art tech has US fund or materials which means US nod is required no matter what..

but one thing is for sure....if US and Israel has same tech then we will definitely go for Israel options-there is no EUM or agreement attached to it....which means Israel will still be big market for us to shop.

No country will give you its bread an butter . Kind of cooperation we have with Israel in electronics or missile defense system is unparalleled . Israelis are behind the scenes in many of our critical projects. You forgot that LCA radar also has Israeli processor. AESA project for LCA is also running with help from Israel.Barak is one more such example . Its up to us to learn fast and improve form knowledge that we have gained from them . If we are not able to catch them up or improve quickly its not their fault. Israel is only supplier which is ready to cater our retail requirements . All other countries are ready to supply a complete package or product.

Not sure exactly how to respond - I was really under the impression that much of the tech from Israel came from the US in the first place?

Doesn't the US have all the leverage in the situation?
