I think it is just the nature of forums in general. There has been a steady decline in the format as social media takes most of the traffic. MSM is only going to quote someone that is an authority or has name recognition whose information has gone viral. The nature of this is too anonymous to be used as the source citation unless the user has publicly exposed their true identity which is why social media gets more citations.
