"Battle for Maravi": how the Philippine army is trying to recapture the occupied city from the IG militants

On May 23, 2017, paramilitary groups "Abu Sayyaf" and "Mouti" captured the Maravi city of Filipino. The militants of Abu Sayyaf terrorized the country for two decades, and the second grouping was created only in 2012 by the brothers Mauti. They were united by the fact that the leaders of the formations declared their struggle for the idea of an independent Islamic state in the Philippines. The capture of Maravi by them indicates that the "Islamic state" * has another stronghold, this time in South Asia. The Philippine government established a military regime on the island of Mindanao, where Maravi is located. Officials were sure that they would be able to liberate the city in a few weeks, but the counter-terrorist operation has been going on for three months already. In the place were sent 3 thousand military, 122 people were killed in battles with extremists. According to the Philippine army, in total, more than 520 militants were killed.

"Well armed militants were about 400. They were able to strengthen the defense, install machine guns, plant snipers, mined buildings, lay various types of bombs, which led to great destruction and casualties," said Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Har Herrera of the joint operative group.
The RTD filming team spent about a week on the island of Mindanao, shooting the battles for Maravi. All approaches to the city were blocked, the police conducted searches and searches in search of terrorists, their accomplices or weapons. The military managed to liberate civilians: some of them hid in shelters for about a week, without electricity and drinking water. "The risk is very high. It often happens when we go to an operation that someone in my team is being shot. Every time we go to save people, we see what really happens in the city, "- said one of the rescuers. Those parts of the city that managed to beat off the terrorists, look depressing. All buildings are destroyed, private houses are looted, the smell of decaying corpses is in the air.
The RTD filming team spent about a week on the island of Filipino, shooting battles for the city of Maravi. The operation for its liberation is comparable in scope with the anti-terrorist campaigns in Aleppo and Mosul. On the scorched earth on the once paradise island - in the new film RTD and in the photo report of Jonathan Cellona about the actions of the Philippine Marines in the liberated Marawi.
