Australian Police Operation Under Way In Sydney

Australian police have cordoned off one of Sydney's main business areas, with reports that hostages are being held in a cafe.

Part of Martin Place, home to the Reserve Bank of Australia, commercial banks and close to the New South Wales state parliament, was closed off by armed officers.

Live television footage showed patrons inside a cafe standing with their hands pressed against the windows.

A black and white flag similar to those used by Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria was also visible.

New South Wales Police tweeted: "A police operation is under way in Martin Place, Sydney's CBD. People are advised to avoid the area.

Media should avoid showing positions of counter-terrorist units in this kind of situation. That is dangerous. The hostage takers outside can monitor what law enforcement are planning.

It's done, Ploice have asked them to stop live coverage and they have complied.

This needs to become standard around the world for CT ops.

I'm watching the live TV coverage right now and they are still showing the armed police force standing outside the door. And they looked quite bored, holding their rifles down near their waist leaning against the wall lol.

Update is:

-There is only one gunman.
-2 hostages has been released.
-Arab council of Australia released a statement saying that they are shocked and hope everything will be solved peacefully, gunman face the law, etc.
-Muslim council said they are horrified, blah blah same thing.

edit: 3 hostages escaped, not 2.

In India they would start complaining against the fascist government trying to muzzle Media's voice. International Media would start discussion how India has zero Media Freedom.

Ah okay maybe all of them have not complied yet, or perhaps they are showing delayed pictures. Did read reports of police asking them to stop though
Channel Seven's Sean Berry has told ABC Radio's 702 that police have asked them not to film, so their live coverage is no longer rolling.

What does the flag in Sydney cafe say?

The flag raised by hostages in Sydney café is written in the Arabic language and it says "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger" which is the basic statement of belief in Islam.

This statement is used by different Islamic groups such as the Jabhat Al-Nusra (the Nusra Front), the Islamic group fighting against Bashar Al-Assad in Syria, the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Boko Haram in Nigeria and even in national flags such as the Saudi Arabia flag and different versions of the Afghanistan flag between 1992 and 2001.
The statement has no hostile nature and is widely used by Muslims in their daily lives and in Islamic events and prayers.

However, the reason jihadist groups use this statement is because they see themselves as Islam's representatives and main defenders, and they believe that the religious bond between their members is the reason for their unity more than nationality, race or origin.

They also use it because it was used in campaigns to spread Islam in the time of Prophet Muhammad.

The flag used in Martin Place is different from the one used by the Islamic State in font and shape, even though it has the same message. The Islamic State flag is black and white with a statement that says "There is no God but Allah". A white circle contains the rest of the statement which is "Muhammad is his messenger".

The Jabhat Al-Nusra flag is more similar to the one held in the café. It is black, and has the statement, "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger" and the "Jabhat Al-Nusra" name under it.

The only difference is the one in the café does not have the Jabhat Al-Nusra name.

Saudi Arabia's flag is green and has the same statement written in the same font of the flag in Martin Place.

The flag raised in the Sydney cafe can represent any Islamic or jihadist group.

Maybe it's delayed or something.

I was actually watching it on Channel Seven lol. And I saw the part where the hostages ran out the back door, where the police was guarding. Maybe it wasn't live.
