That's your interpretation and thinking. Sharia is actually very flexible. The modern day "custodians" of Islam have made it inflexible.
Sharia is not flexible sir. It's more to do with Islamic rule. It's fixed but as i said interpretation is different. Minorities are in bad condition in all countries where Sharia law exist. Why we need blasphemy law in 21st century ?? why there is riot on a cartoon ?? majority of Muslims are very aggressive and emotional towards their religion.

Most of the Muslims believe more in their Muslim brotherhood rather than in the country they living. This is wrong according to me but this is what truth is.

Ok Gentlemen.

Let us discuss but keep it civil.

Any religion bashing will only lead to the closure of this thread.

Let us educate ourselves and let that alone guide us.

Just to be clear, Sharia is merely the moral code and religious law of Islam.

It is in the spiritual realm and not the temporal realm.

In case one wants to discuss Sharia as applied in Muslim countries as of today, then please open another thread.

This is basically a thread discussing what the title is suggesting and nothing more!

Interpretation of Sharia is important. Taliban interprets it differently, so does Saudi, Iran.

What Muslim brotherhood are you taking about? Check the news of Muslims killing Muslims in mosques!!
Where was the brotherhood when Saudis joined forces with the US to attack Iraq? Where was the brotherhood when Iran and Iraq fought for eight years including use of chemical weapons? It's all BS this brotherhood. Each country is for itself.

About taking offense to cartoons, well some people take their religion too seriously. Just today I read some protest about Ganesh T Shirts.

Moving to some boisterous stuff and so should we say thank you all?

I am getting requests.

Last word from the Sponsors:

Sharia is not connected to the concept of Ummah as such!

There are many similarities in the Koran and the Old Testament. Could the Koran be a copy of the Old Testament, with its Arabic variation?

How do you separate the three Abraham Religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity? The answer is simple, first came Moses(PBUH), then came Jesus(PBUH), and then came Mohammad (PBUH). All three religions developed in the same area over a 1 700 year period.

Many religions are based upon many of the same beliefs. This is so with these two religions but it is not right to compare Quran with old testament. Its like comparing Orange with apples. Old testaament is more like hadiths rather than the Quran.

The Quran for instance is a revelation to mankind, its writing style is that of revelation, it defines mans purpose in life and God's purpose, it's written in the first person ("God's voice"), it doesn't contain any words from the prophets or the historians, each word is to be taken literally and not metaphorically (unless otherwise stated) and the Quran claims in its entirety to be the revealed word of God.On the other hand the Bible is a collection of religious books that were compiled together with many other books left out due to their difference of opinion not being supported by the majority of the authority compiling the Bible. The books included in the Bible contain words that claim to be from God, words that claim to be from the prophets, words that claim to be from witnesses of the events and words of the historians.

No, Its not because -
"This Book is revealed by God - allah - the Mighty, the Wise One
1) Mohummed [pbuh]was illiterate ,who could not read nor could he write nor had he been in contact with any Christian or Judaic authority.
2)The Old Testament even picturesGod as one who intended to do evil but then repented. It would not be surprising for anyone to turn away from God and not consider Him worthy of worship if He himself has to repent from His own evil.
3) The story of creation and human history in the Old Testament contradicts the most basic science findings.Whereas In the Qur'an, there are many verses of a scientific nature that discuss the creation, the development of the embryo, the origin of fresh underground water, and other physical and scientific phenomena that were discovered hundreds of years after the revelation of the Qur'an. None of these verses contradict any of the proven scientific facts.

Prophet Mohammed was illiterate is the most fallicious statement propagated about him. That is also true for Muslims who accept this.

Which was the first revelation? Ikra bismi.

The first revelation was the first five verses of Surah (chapter) Al-Alaq: "Iqra bismi rabbikalla dhi khalaq. Khalaqal insana min alaq. Iqra wa rabbukal akram. Alladhi 'allama bil qalam. 'Allamal insana malam ya'lam, " which means "Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clot. Read, for your Lord is most Generous, Who teaches by means of the pen, teaches man what he does not know." (96: 1-5)

If Mohammed (pbuh) was illiterate, how did the very first word that God revealed to Him was "Ikra" which means read!!

The very first revelation proves the Prophet was NOT illiterate.

Well it doesn't 'prove' anything more than Bhagavad Gita 'proving' the existence of Lord Krishna.

Finding the common ground in our religious writings

We have found our discussions of the stories from the Bible and the Qur'an to be the most fascinating and educational part of our meetings. We all have been surprised at some of the differences in the ancient stories and also in the interpretations made by each religion. But most importantly, we have seen how common the core values of each story have been when expressed in the words of each religion. It's a bit like unwrapping three packages, each wrapped in different paper, that contain the same gift inside. We think most people concentrate on how the package looks instead of taking the time and effort to find what's inside. By understanding each others religious background we have found much common ground and new respect for the other's point of view. It is our hope that children of all faiths and beliefs will read and discuss these stories with their families, their teachers, and with each other.

Before reading the stories, it may be useful to review some background about the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and the Qur'an (Koran).

The Torah is the Hebrew term for the first five books of The Hebrew Bible. It is sometimes called The Five Books of Moses or The Pentateuch. It includes The Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The entire Hebrew Bible is called The Tanakh or The Holy Scriptures and includes The Torah, The Prophets, and The Writings. There is a difference between The Hebrew Bible and The Christian Bible. The Christian Bible is divided into two sections, usually referred to as "The Old Testament" and "The New Testament." Jews do not accept the term "Old Testament" as it implies a "New Testament." (Plaut, pg. 18*) Therefore, when necessary, we will specify Torah, Hebrew Bible, or Christian Bible as appropriate for clarification and understanding.
An Orthodox or fundamentalist view of Judaism holds that The Torah is the word of God, given by God to Moses. A more liberal view maintains that The Torah was written by man in Biblical times and is "a book about humanity's understanding of and experience with God." (Plaut, pg. 18*)
Torah also means instruction or teaching. Therefore, in its broadest sense; Torah encompasses the entire body of Jewish learning. It teaches Jews history, laws, morals, values, and standards of behavior. It is meant to be taught and studied, discussed and debated by all Jews.

The Christian Bible is made up of two main sections, the "Old Testament" and the "New Testament." The Old Testament contains the same books as The Hebrew Bible. The New Testament documents the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The New Testament contains four main sections, The Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, The Epistles, and The Book of Revelation. The Gospels tell the story of the life, teachings and resurrection of Jesus. The Acts of the Apostles tells how Jesus' disciples acted as missionaries, spreading the teachings of Christ. The Epistles contains letters written by Jesus' disciples as they traveled to foreign lands. The book of Revelation foretells the Day of Judgment and Jesus' return to Earth.

The Qur'an (Koran) is the Holy Book of Islam. It is considered by Muslims worldwide to be the unaltered word of God. Literally, the Qur'an means "the Reading" or "the Recitation". It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by God through the Angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years beginning in 610 AD. The Qur'an is divided into 114 Surahs (chapters) and includes stories/passages about Prophets Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Joseph and many others. Muslims recite various parts of the Qur'an every day as a part of the five daily prayers. Children as young as 6 or 7 memorize the entire Arabic text.

To each his own. That's why I said Quran has been interpreted by everyone who wasnt even qualified.

Even a fool would not ask an illiterate man to read. Well Quran has forced been used to interpret to suit ones objectives. Just like how th terrorists use it.

Koran = Mixture of all religion. (As Islam is one of the newest religion). It took help from many religion from Abrahamic religion. [Many things are common between them]. rest from ancestral religion.

In 6th century, Most of the civilization were rich and prospering like various Indian kingdom, Chinese, Persian, Greeks, Romans, East Asia, etc.

90% people were following some religion, There was hardly any country left for another new religion, So Islam spread with the help of Invasion and based on concept of expansionism. Like Persian, Kurdistan, India, Turkey, Indonesia, Africa, etc.
Agreed !!

Expansionism and invasion were the methods through which Islam spread for which it used the bad practices of other religions as a tool.Even in India Sufis came first but they were unable to spread Islam, which was later spread through Invasion and Expansionism. It had to borrow the spiritual thoughts from other religions, even today if we try to create a new religion we'll have to adopt thoughts from other religions.

BTW i personally don't believe that the holy Quran or any other religious book from any religion was the words of God, Ishwar or Allah. They all are results of direct efforts of men !! so similarities are there...

OT, here but when a thread on Hinduism started somehow everyone started stating blasphemy, blaming the Gods, eventually moved on to BJP and the RSS. It's better if such threads didn't exist in DFI.

From the Muslim theological point of view, Islam is only a revival of the first faith. So while non-muslims take Islam as a new religion. The theological point of view is that God has sent prophets since the beginning of time to all people and nations around the world. Some of the mentioned in the Quran and others that have not been mentioned. Holy books were revealed to these prophets that were sent as well.

And the main purpose was to make mankind realize that they should live an honorable life, do good deeds and be prepared for judgment day when their good and bad deeds will be measured.

The revealed books that are mentioned in the Quran are the Zabur or the book revealed to David/Dawood, the Torah or the Old testament, the Injeel or the Bible or the new testament and the Quran.

Most Islamic scholars will agree that there are many other books that could be revealed and hence some have agreed that the Vedas could be revealed books to a prophet at that time. Some have indicated that the Buddha or Ram could have been prophets of their time as well. As early as the 11th century when Al Biruni came to India and pioneered the study of comparitive religion, he mentions how Zorastrians and Hindus being the holders of a revealed book are entitled to the people of the book status and saw a strong strain of monotheism in their holy books. Dara Shikoh in his book Majmaul-Bahrain would reiterate the same idea around 500 years later.

And the finality of prophet hood ends with Muhammed with the final revealed book as the Quran. Now this is the Muslim belief. So in places where the Old testament( or even vedas for that matter) agrees with the Quran like belief in one God e.t.c. that is fine. It is revival of the same philosophy and not a copy as such.

But unless your read both the books in their native languages it will be difficult to fathom the differences. For example, the entire Quran is written in poetry form where the Arabic verses rhyme in some way or another. There is no such form in Old testament. The other major difference is that the Old testament is extremely violent and calls for killing of cattle, cutting trees and killing even babies of gentiles (or non-jews).

In the Quran, out of the 6000+ verses, the word Jihad comes in around 35 verses and that too in the context of "struggling" or "striving" or the "greater Jihad". In only 5 verses the word Qital or "fighting" or "killing" is used. Interestingly the word Jihad and Qital never come together in the Quran.
