The education sector in India needs a complete make-over but the efforts till now seem to be half-hearted. Now, it seems that the steps being taken by HRD are actually regressive and take away the autonomy of the few govt. institutes which perform OK. Ofcourse, if its govt. money they can impose any restriction whatsoever but education sector would also get stifled in the same way as industrial development got stifled due to govt. intervention.

Here is the latest development about govt. deciding to interfere in affairs of IIMs. They are not the best institutes and this politicization of governing council will further decrease their quality: http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/iim-bil-degree-of-unfreedom/2/

    Some changes being sought are:
I think these issues are cropping up because Smriti Irani is not good for the job and probably listens to bureaucrats too much. HRD needs someone like Parrikar, who could bring in drastic changes and cut down size of the vested interests.

Give them time, the education system built by the British to produce clerks will not be modified overnight. Also Congress party is hell set against anything that BJP does. They have no say in the Parliament but they can bribe the media and set public against any reform.

So you think suddenly one day Smriti Irani will wake up and change the discourse! There are no hints for positive steps and hence the thread. I do not say the same for other ministers.

Remember Murli Manohar Joshi, the Education Minister of PM Atal Vajpayee, was thoroughly criticized for instituting some education reforms in 2000/04. The crticts were Congressmen and Christian interests. He continued, in-spite of parliamentary and outside criticism, most lead by Sonia Gandhi. The latter undid everything which Murli Manohar Joshi had done as soon as Congress came back to power.

That is my point, you want lasting education reforms then take your time, opposition has to be party to it and involve the parliamentary process so that decisions made today or not undone tomorrow.

SO you think govt can keep sitting on reforming RTI which gives free pass to minority institutions and has helped closed down many small schools?

If you think this govt. would ever get any support from opposition, it will just be a dream!

One word for it is incompetence. Either that or lack of intent. Both of which is condemnable

  8. Well, We have Dharmaraj Yudhisthar as the new Chairman of FTII, that certainly seems to be a reform.

At least give me a chance, 'Yudhisthir' tells protesting FTII students
