Is India the Rape Capital of the World?

We're horrified by news reports of rape in India and feel lucky we don't live there. But the country with the highest rate of sexual assault isn't India—it's us

Americans are reading with horror as sexual assault after sexual assault unfolds in India. It's easy to wonder, "What's wrong with that country?" But we should be asking what's wrong with the United States, too.

Rape and violence against women are a massive problem in India. According to the country's National Crime Record Bureau, crimes against women have increased by 7.1 percent since 2010. The number of rapes reported has also risen. Nearly one in three rape victims in India is under the age of 18. One in 10 are under 14. Every 20 minutes in India, a woman is raped.

And yet India only ranks third for the number of rapes reported each year. What country ranks first? The United States. In India, a country of over 1.2 billion people, 24,206 rapes were reported in 2011. The same year in the United States, a nation of 300 million, 83,425 rapes were reported. In the United States, every 6.2 minutes a woman is raped.

Even if sexual assault in India is dramatically underreported, which most likely it is, the statistical difference is still striking—as is our uniquely American inclination to dismiss such monstrous human rights violations as problems that other countries face. Not only is violence against women a global pandemic but the United States may be leading the pack.

Oh, but you think, women who've been sexually assaulted in America are better treated. Rape victims in India, especially in rural villages, are often subject to shaming and considered unfit for marriage. But meanwhile, in Steubenville, Ohio, two young men who were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl too intoxicated to consent continue to be defended as upstanding football players while the reputation of the young woman is smeared. When the verdict was announced, a CNN reporter came close to portraying the rapists as passive victims: "These two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students, literally watched as they believed their lives fell apart." Other media coverage seemed equally sympathetic to the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the victim was blamed. Early on, one of the 19 coaches of the Steubenville High football team said the victim was just making up the rape. The victim and her family had to get police protection due to the level of threats against them. Two weeks ago, a prominent local activitist in Steubenville spoke about the "alleged victim" (even though the allegations had turned into a conviction) and suggested, according to a reporter, that the victim "might have been a willing participant". Meanwhile, the woman who broke the story of the rape—she is a local blogger—has been harassed and threatened.

Isolated incident of smearing and shaming the victim? Afraid not. Just weeks after the Steubenville story broke, two high school football players in Torrington, Connecticut were accused of raping a 13-year-old girl. The response? Dozens of people from the town took to social media to berate and blame the 13-year-old accuser.

Mallika Dutt runs Breakthrough, an organization that works to build human rights culture in India and the United States. Dutt says the differences between the two countries are more perceived than real. "There's an assumption that [in America] we're more evolved, that we're more civilized, that the status of women is waaaaay better than the status of women in India or any other part of the world," says Dutt.

That's untrue, says Dutt, and the false comfort may do Americans more harm than good. "It's always easier to ascribe negative attributes to the other than to than yourself," she says. But such denial means we focus on the problems elsewhere to the detriment of improving conditions here in the United States as well. Violence against women anywhere should be a reminder to scrutinize injustice everywhere, including right here at home.

The encouraging fact is that while the U.S. still ranks first in the world for reported rapes, the number is declining here while statistics suggest India is moving in the other direction. In the U.S. the rate of reported rapes decreased by over 12 percent between 2002 and 2011. Over the last two decades, rates of domestic violence have dropped by more than 50 percent. And while only half of Americans in 1987 said it is "always wrong" for a man to beat his wife with a belt or a stick, a decade later 86 percent said it is wrong. That's progress. But from Dallas to Delhi and everywhere in between, there's still much more progress to be made.

Top 10 Countries With Highest Rape Crime

Here is the list of top 10 countries with highest rape crime. You would be amazed to read that the most developed countries like U.S., Sweden, France, Canada, UK and Germany are the most immersed ones in this crime.

10. Ethiopia
Highest Rape Crime in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is estimated to have one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. A report by the UN found that nearly 60% of Ethiopian women were subjected to sexual violence. Rape is a very serious problem in Ethiopia. The country is infamous for the practice of marriage by abduction, with the prevalence of this practice in Ethiopia being one of the highest in the world. In many parts of Ethiopia, it is common for a man, working in co-ordination with his friends, to kidnap a girl or woman, sometimes using a horse to ease the escape. The abductor will then hide his intended bride and rape her until she becomes pregnant. Girls as young as eleven years old are reported to have been kidnapped for the purpose of marriage. Also the Ethiopian military has been accused of committing systematic rapes against civilians.

9. Sri Lanka
Rape Crime in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's security forces are still raping and torturing suspects. There have been recent allegations that rape and torture by the Sri Lankan security forces have continued four years after the civil war ended. The UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence found that 14.5% of the sample of Sri Lankan men had perpetrated rape at some point in their lives. 4.9% had raped in the past year. 2.7% had raped another man. 1.6% had took part in a gang rape. 96.5% of the men who had raped experienced no legal consequences. 65.8% didn't feel worried or guilty afterwards. 64.9% of rapists had raped more than once, and 11.1% had raped four or more girls or women.

It is reported that over one in three women had experienced a sexual assault and that only 6% of sexual assaults were reported to the police. According to Justice Institute of British Columbia, one out of every 17 women is raped, 62% of rape victims were physically injured, 9% were beaten or disfigured.

7. France
Rape Crime in France
Rape was not a crime in France until 1980. Laws reinforcing women's rights and safety are relatively recent in France. The law making rape a crime dates back only to 1980. Earlier decrees were based on 19th century moral codes. A law on sexual-harassment was approved in 1992 and one on moral harassment was passed in 2002. The last bill to fight violence against women was passed last year. Government studies show there are 75,000 rapes a year in the country. Only about 10 percent of the victims filed complaints. France is at the 7th position with the total reported crime of 3,771,850.

6. Germany
Rape Crime in Germany
An estimate of 240,000 women and girls has died up till now in Germany because of this crime. Germany is on the number six in the highest rape crime with the figures of 6,507,394 in this year which is really a big figure. German Catholics have allowed the morning-after pills for the victims. The country moving forward in technology is actually moving really backward in humanity.

5. United Kingdom
Women Against Rape demonstration
Many people wish to live or even visit UK as it is one of the most developed countries. But they surely must not be aware that this country is also involved badly in the crime of rape. One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year. More than 25 per cent of South African men questioned in a survey published by the Medical Research Council (MRC) admitted to rape; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person. Three out of four of those who had admitted rape indicated that they had attacked for the first time during their teens. Intiassa ei ole tylsää uutispäivää - Journalisti

Finnish reporter in India, she writes that media houses ask at least once a month a rape story from her.

Story from few days ago: five year old girl raped in India.
The population is more here, there is a sinister plot going on against India, to damage the Image of India and also tourism.

I think soon they will be countered. India is a safe place for women and women get lot of respect in public domain.

I used to see Discovery/NGC type channels a lot and there used to be lot of crime serials telling horrible and most brutal crimes including serial rapists who kill and mutilate after rape.

Looking at those series it makes one think that US is the #1 country where brutal rapes happen. That also where sex is so open and free and not some "sexually frustrated" 3rd world inhibitors.

There is a new channel Investigation Discovery which is all about it.

Reporting rapes provides sadistic pleasure for some and it also makes someone earns few cents and DAILY BREAD.

I have seen enough news where women are raped and molested even more in EU/US.

Ok I found some data about why India is the fav. punching bag today even when those so called 1st world civilized sexually liberated feminist countries have even more problems regarding "women safety".I am very concerned not just for women in those countries but even men.

For example...Britain is not even safe for men rest aside women...see below shocking news... 12% rapes in UK are against men.Britain where white teen girls are groomed by middle aged Paki/Muslim men and Britain cant do anything at all.British term them "Asian Men" so they are even afraid to call who did it.

@jouni some stats for you. The same was posted before since we are getting sick and tired when people make it a international news when their own house is burning -> http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/...ocumentary-women-safety-india.html#post890271

:truestory: :truestory: :truestory:

Over 72,000 men found to be raped in UK every year

With huge publicity to each rape in India, it looks like Delhi is a rape capital.

Is it? Or some vested interests are hell bent upon giving India a bad name.

In Canada the Women's organizations had a sticker on their website until six months that every girl born has 50% chance of sexually assaulted in her life time. Women's organizations distribute a Rape Whistle to attract attention of the public. Does that make Canada a rape capital. No is the answer.

The spread of rape one reason that the offender rarely goes to jail long enough to make an example to the others. Even the brave heart rapists in Delhi have not been hanged three years after the crime. If you had hanged them in public, that Rohtak rape and murder of a Nepalese women would not have happened. Everybody is afraid to get his neck stretched 12 inches. Hanging would have set an example. Others rapists are out on bail and thumbing at the victims. Until the court system gets out of giving stay on minor excuses, these rapes would not stop.

Do you really think that rapes do not happen in NewYork, London, Shanghahi or Karachi ? Really ! Every day, hundreds of rape happen in each of these cities. Do you think Africa or Latin America "rape free" continents......in fact, you can't even count how many rapes happen in these continents each day.
This false propaganda about India is to diminish the self esteem of Indians. I don't mean that rapes are OK....I am only saying that rapes happen in every city in the world but why the focus is always on Indian cities. Western media have its subtle crooked way to hurt pride of nations who do not obey the hegemons.

Karachi is the RAPE CAPITAL of the world since 100 rapes happen each day.

Check news and some sources were taken down by Pakistan since it was made by a Paki doc himself. We all know how Paki media is gagged.
