Irom Sharmila to break 16-year fast, to contest elections in Manipur

NEW DELHI: Manipuri rights activist Irom Sharmila+ , who has been demanding the repeal of controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act ( AFSPA+ ), has decided to break her fast of 16 years and said she will fight elections instead.

"I will break my fast as the government has failed to give any positive response. I will fight elections to resolve the issues," she said on Tuesday.

She will break her fast on August 9.

Assembly elections in Manipur are scheduled in 2017.

Irom has been on a hunger strike since November 2000, when 10 civilians were killed by security forces at a bus stop near Imphal airport.

The fasting agitator, who is being fed through a nasal tube, has justified using the fast as a weapon to achieve her goal of repealing AFSPA.

"Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, had resorted to fasts while making certain demands," she has said.

She had been arrested, released and then re-arrested from time to time on the charge of making an attempt to commit suicide.

While I appreciate her determination, I always felt that she was mentally retarded.

They claim she's been on IV all this while, not ingesting anything orally.

Has to be a world record NBM (nothing by mouth) course of a conscious person. Whether or not she wins these elections, the Indian state has achieved a big win.

Only an unsound mind will do such a 16 year long fasting protest , a social person can't do this.

I have not been to Manipur. I have not met Rahul Gandhi or Modi either. However I do read and I support the intent of AFSPA.

Manipur is like the Syria of India. The tiny state has more terrorist outfits than the rest of India combined together.
Infact it's easier to become an insurgent(or UG's as they are known there) than getting a job.
The state has very little running infrastructure and paralyzed by daily bandhs.

I don't support ASFA simply because it's against ethnics and morality as it protects the guilty party from persecution.Even the UN calls this law inhuman.
You must understand that secessionism is very strong in the North East and laws like AFSPA adds more fuel to fire.

If we don't want Manipur to go the kashmir way,we have to repeal this law.

    Hi there!

I was very busy with work.

I firmly believe that insurgency in the north east can be dealt without AFSPA.

As said before AFSPA cannot defeat insurgency.Despite the law being enacted in the state since 1958,the security forces have met with very little success. Infact the insurgency only grew and mushroomed from a handful of terrorists in the beginning to now more than 34 insurgent groups.
The only thing that AFSPA does is add more fuel to fire and rub salt on people's wound.

Thats a load of bullcrap, without AFSPA there will be daily cases against Security forces to try and whittle them from conducting their duty. AFSPA is justified in these cases.
Who cares if UN calls it Inhuman? it also calls death penalty inhuman,do you want a mass murderer to be put up for life on tax payers money or simply hanged to death?
UN is a paper tiger and any country which enjoys a respectable position and power, knows UN cannot do nor enforce anything except pay lip service. It is NATO's and USA's lackey it speaks, talks, does what USA wants it to do.Why should we be worried about UN or how we look to the world when its a matter of internal security?

Most of the Peace Doves will really shit like Doves if ever forced to confront the terrorists.

AFSPA has made sure that our soldiers don't have to fight the two front war, one on ground and another one in the court rooms.

This is really what we need to do: Rub salt and chilly over the wounds of the separatists and send a clear message that we are here to stay and they have got everything to loose. Make their lives miserable, destroy their generations, set their house on fire.

Hmm... I am aware of the the other side of AFSPA and they are serious concerns surely.

But the core issue was the failure of the political administration. The focus should be on getting the political solution rather than go after the armed forces that have been tasked with an objective. Irom's protest contributed more to demonize a force that operates under orders rather than the political class that must be held accountable.

Do let me know your views.
