IRCTC Among Nine Caterers Fined by Railways for 'Bad Food'

New Delhi: Cracking the whip, Railways have imposed heavy fines totalling Rs. 11.50 lakh on nine caterers including IRCTC for serving "bad quality" food in trains.

"We had launched a special drive in the last month to detect quality of food being served on different trains. We found bad quality food on some trains and action was taken against caterers accordingly," a senior Railway Ministry official said.

Besides Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), RK Associates, Sunshine Caterers, Satyam Caterers, Brandavan Food Products were among those fined. "IRCTC was fined Rs. one lakh as a cockroach was found in the food in Kolkata Rajdhani on July 23," the official said adding, "bad food was found in 13 trains".

Besides Kolkata Rajdhani, other trains covered during the special drive include Paschim Express, Pushpak Express, Motihari Express, Shiv Ganga Express, Golden Temple Mail, Netravati Express, Punjab Mail, Howrah-Amritsar Mail and Chandigarh Shatabdi.

While in some trains food was found to be kept in unhygienic conditions, in others it was either found to be stale or substandard, the official said, adding, fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. one lakh have been imposed. "A caterer would lose licence, if found at fault five times," the official said.

Plagued by a number of complaints regarding the quality of food, Railways have made a concerted attempt to improve quality of food being served in trains.

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had announced in the Rail Budget to make course correction in catering service to address the problem. According to the plan, top caterers like ITC, MTR and Haldiram have been roped in to serve pre-cooked food in trains on a trial basis.

Six trains, including three premier trains Rajdhani, Duronto, Shatabdi, have been selected for introduction of pre-cooked food by ITC, MTR and Haldiram. Items like 'Chicken Chettinad', 'Hyderabadi Biryani', 'Sambar Rice' and 'Rajma Chawal' are among the mouth-watering dishes to be offered on these trains.

The pre-cooked food will be packaged food which are just required to put into microwave before being served hot. "We will try pre-cooked food in trains for a week and depending upon the response it will be introduced in other trains on a regular basis," the official said.

I know IRCTC is government owned.

What about the rest? RK Associates, Sunshine Caterers, Satyam Caterers, Brandavan Food Products; are these private companies?

    @Bangalorean, could you please confirm?

I had a meal in the train recently while travelling in Shtapdi express. I found the meal to be of decent quality. Ofcourse, it is not like the one you get in hotels and at your homes but it was edible which is good enough for the price we pay for it. For meals while travelling by air, airlines pay over Rs.1000 (a full meal, not a subway sandwich). Many people still do not like airline food because it is not according to the exact taste they would want. For the price the railways pays to the caterers, the food is acceptable. We must be willing to pay more for better food. I paid Rs.650 for a tatkaal ticket for a 200 kms journey which includes a free meal. Cant ask for much more. But if the price would have been over Rs.1000 I would definitely want a better meal.

It's not about good/bad taste but the unhygienic ways it's made. The food include sweat of workers, unwashed utensils and off course tasted by cockroaches as well before it reaches the end customer.

Well done but it should be 2 warning for minor incidents and only 1 warning for major incident to revoke the license rather then five.

Private companies range from the hole-in-the-wall streetside contractor to L&T construction. You have everything from the crappiest to the best in international standards available right here in India. You can choose the halwai in the Srirampuram slum of Bangalore to cater to Indian Railways, or you can choose MTR.

If you, as an outsourcer, cannot ensure quality of service being delivered to your consumers, you deserve all the brickbats you get.

I do not know what happens in the kitchen of regular long distance trains, but the super fast premium trains like Rajdhaani and Shatapdi have decent quality of food. There are companies that privately supply food to your seat, you can choose the from the menu and which station you want it to be delivered Food Delivery in Trains | Food for Train Journey | Train Food Service – TravelKhana.Com

It is a difficult task to satisfy individual taste and preference, but with the limited budget they have per ticket it is a decent quality food.

It is only for AC I that the food is cooked in the pantry car and you have the choice of how you want the food done.

    Elsewhere, beggars are no choosers.

They do throw a cockroach as a bonus as they did in the Rajdhani that has caused this upheaval in catering.

Nowadays, there are private catering companies and you SMS them and you get your food of choice at the station that is desired.
