Iran plans to send a live monkey into space next month, the latest advance in a missile and space program which has alarmed Israel and its western allies that fear the Islamic Republic is seeking nuclear weapons.

The head of Iran's Space Agency on Monday said five monkeys were undergoing tests before one is selected for the flight on board a Kavoshgar-5 rocket, according to the official IRNA news agency.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last August that Iran planned to send a man into space by 2017.

Western countries are concerned the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch atomic warheads.

Tehran denies such suggestions and says its nuclear work is purely peaceful.

Last week, Iran launched its second domestically built satellite into orbit, the Rasad 1 (Observation), which it said was for transmitting images and weather forecasts.

Iran plans to send monkey into space

Tehran conducts missile tests as Iranian space agency announces proposed mission to launch monkey into orbit.

    Last Modified: 28 Jun 2011 04:41

Iran has unveiled the next stage of its space programme, saying it is going to send a monkey into space next month.

Five monkeys were undergoing tests before one was to be selected for the flight on board a Kavoshgar-5 rocket, the head of Iran's space agency was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency on Monday.

The announcement comes after Iranian state television showed footage of a missile training exercise conducted by the country's Revolutionary Guards.

A spokesman said the war games tested long, medium and short-range missile capability on ground and sea targets.

Iran says it has a wide range of missiles, some capable of striking Israel and US bases in the region.

    'Unsung heroes'

Animals have a long history of space travel.

In 1948, NASA began putting monkeys aboard its rockets. Most of them died and are still considered the unsung heroes of the space race.

Farouk Baz, a director of space research at Boston University, told Al Jazeera that Iran's announcement was intended to showcase Iran's homegrown space industry.

"This is now all homemade. However, many of the Iranians have been studying abroad, the same way the Indians and the Chinese did. They had people working in the laboratories in the US and all over Europe.

"Most of these people get good degrees, work very hard and as soon as they are ready they go home, and they are treated like heroes and given funds to further their research."

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, said last August that Iran planned to send a man into space by 2017.

Last week, Iran launched its second domestically built satellite into orbit, the Rasad 1 (Observation), which it said was for transmitting images and weather forecasts.

Western countries are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch atomic warheads.

Tehran denies such suggestions and says its nuclear work is purely for peaceful use.

Animal Astronaut: Iran to Launch a Monkey Into Space Next Month

    By: Clara Kim

Following to suit of a mouse, a turtle and some worms, an Iranian monkey is to be sent to space next month.

According to the head of Iran's Space Agency, there are five monkeys in training, but only one will have the honor of boarding the Kavoshgar-5 (Explorer-5) rocket especially designed for the occasion. Iran has been picking up speed in its race to send a real astronaut to space by 2017 as President Ahmadinejad said last August.

This Iranian monkey won't be the first to fly to the stars, however. Space programs around the world including NASA have launched countless animals to space. Albert II, a Rhesus Monkey in the 1949 U.S. V2 mission was history's first space monkey. One of the smartest space animals was Ham the Chimp in 1961 Mercury project; trained with banana and electric shock, it learned to pull levers and led the project to success. A few months later in May 1961, NASA flew its first astronaut, Alan Shepard. Besides chimps and monkeys, dogs, spiders, silkworms, frogs are among other species that have made their way to the stars.

Recent advancement in Iran's space program has concerned the U.S., Israel and other allies because the same technology could be applied in long-range missile developments. In fact, Iran announced on Monday after the war games that it has long-range missiles capable of striking U.S. and Israeli bases in the area.

Iran space monkey likely to spark nuclear fears from the West

Iran says it plans to send a monkey into space next month as part of its space program, potentially sparking fears from Western countries about the progress of Iran’s missile arsenal.

Five monkeys are undergoing tests, and one will be selected for the flight on board a Kavoshgar-5 rocket, state-run news agency IRNA reported on Monday, quoting the head of Iran's Space Agency.

But the experiment is likely to alarm Israel and its Western allies, who are concerned that Iran is pressing on with its plans for nuclear arms.

The fear is that Iran’s long-range ballistic technology used in Iran’s space program to propel satellites into orbit could also be used to launch atomic warheads.

Tehran has denied such suggestions, saying its nuclear work is purely peaceful and adding that it seeks only energy-producing reactors, IRNA reported.

Last year, Iran announced it had launched a rocket carrying a mouse, turtle and worms into space.

In August 2010 the country’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said that Iran planned to send a man into space by 2017.

Last week, Iran launched its second domestically built satellite into orbit, the Rasad 1, which it said was designed for transmitting images and for weather forecasting, according to Reuters reports.
