US Aircraft Carrier 'enters' Iran wargames zone
.
.
TEHRAN, Dec 29: A US aircraft carrier entered a zone near the Strait of Hormuz being used by the Iranian navy for wargames, an Iranian official said on Thursday amid rising tensions over the key oil-transit channel.
.
"A US aircraft carrier was spotted inside the manoeuvre zone... by a navy reconnaissance aircraft," Commodore Mahmoud Mousavi, the spokesman for the Iranian exercises, told the official IRNA news agency. Iranian planes and vessels took video and photos of the US ship and the weaponry and aircraft it was carrying, he added, according to a report carried by state television.
.
"We are prepared, in accordance with international law, to confront offenders who do not respect our security perimeters during the manoeuvres," the IRIB network quoted Mousavi as saying."We suggest that trans-regional forces completely and seriously take any warning issued by any unit of (Iran's) naval forces," he said. The US aircraft carrier was believed to the USS John C. Stennis, one of the US navy's biggest warships.US officials announced Wednesday that the ship and its accompanying carrier strike group moved through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow stretch at the entrance to the Gulf that is the world's most important choke point for oil shipments.
After warnings from the Iranian government and navy this week that Iran could close the strait if threatened by further Western sanctions, the US Defence Department warned Wednesday that such actions "will not be tolerated."
.
The United States maintains a navy presence in the Gulf in large part to ensure oil traffic there is unhindered.Iran, which is already subject to several rounds of sanctions over its nuclear programme, has repeatedly said it could target the Strait of Hormuz if attacked or its economy is strangled.Such a move could cause havoc in the world oil market, disrupting the fragile global economy. The Islamic republic is halfway through 10 days of navy exercises in international waters to the east of the strait that have included the laying of mines and the use of aerial drones, according to Iranian media.Missiles and torpedoes were to be test fired in coming days.
.
The wargames zone covers an area of 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles) in the Gulf of Oman into the Gulf of Aden, according to Iranian media. So far, Iran and the United States have limited themselves to rhetoric and naval manoeuvres. But analysts and the oil market are watching the situation carefully, fearing a spark that could ignite open confrontation between the longtime foes. The United States had proposed a military hotline between Tehran and Washington to defuse any "miscalculations" that could occur as their navies brush against each other. But Iran in September rejected that offer.

Think the statement given by Prime Minister of Britian is going to be true.

He said that the Allies may attack IRAN as early as after Christmas or during the first week of the New Year.....

This from the people who attacked and took over an embassy inside their country and held diplomats hostage for more than a year. They are international clowns.

I would be delighted to see Commodore Mousavi incinerated along with all of his ships.

usa has demonstrated they will do what they want and also that you can tell your people whatever you want but in the end it will be usa who will be writing history.
its damn courageous attempt to enter rival's wargame.

but there is a difference between being strong and being smart. lets see how usa tackle iran keeping in mind that this area had seen 71 where the super-carriers were kept on bay by others

Iran Test Fires New Radar-Evading Missile
.
.
Iran has test fired a new medium-range missile capable of avoiding radar detection, raising the stakes in its defiance of the West.
The launch was part of a 10-day military exercise being conducted in the Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.
.
The drill is taking place as the country's relationship with the West is under increasing strain over its nuclear ambitions.
Exercise spokesman Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi told State TV the missile that was tested is one of the newest in the Navy's arsenal."It's equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a built-in system that enables it to thwart jammers," he said.

He denied claims the latest sea manoeuvres serve as practice for closing the vital waterway - as threatened by Iranian officials last week if the West blocks Iran's oil sales. The Strait is the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply. The missile test comes a day after the US slapped new sanctions on financial institutions in Tehran for its controversial atomic programme. The West fears Iran is secretly trying to develop atomic weapons - an allegation that Tehran denies. As the diplomatic skirmishing continues, Iranian scientists have produced what they say is the nation's first nuclear fuel rod.The announcement came after Iran said it was forced to make its own fuel rods since international sanctions banned it from buying them on foreign markets.

Nuclear fuel rods contain pellets of enriched uranium that provide fuel for nuclear power plants.

Iran won't do anything and neither would US. Why?

Because Iran can't due to military concerns (they'd have the whole GCC oil sheikhdoms jump on them along with NATO/USA as blocking Hormuz would be an act of war against Arab oil exports).

And US won't because it is stuck in a quicksand called Afghanistan. The last thing they'd want is another Middle Eastern country go KAABOOM! And this time nuclear.

:bs: how can a missile thwart a radar jammier unless using a very powerful radar like in MiG 25. In that case this missile must be as big as a MiG 21... so much for the stealth.

3rd US Aircraft Carrier Strike Group arrives In Arabian Sea
.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Wednesday that a new aircraft carrier strike group had arrived in the Arabian Sea and that another was on its way to the region, but denied any link to recent tensions with Iran and portrayed the movements as routine.
.
The shift in the powerful U.S. naval assets comes at a moment of heightened tensions with Iran, which has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz - the world's most important oil shipping lane - if U.S. and EU sanctions over its nuclear program cut off its oil exports. The U.S. military has said it will halt any blockade of the strategic strait and the top U.S. naval officer acknowledged on Tuesday that preparing for a potential conflict there was something that "keeps me awake at night."Still, the Pentagon denied any direct link between recent tensions and the movement of aircraft carriers.
.
"I don't want to leave anybody with the impression that we're somehow (speeding) two carriers over there because we're concerned about what happened, you know, today in Iran. It's just not the case," said Captain John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.
.
Military officials said the USS Carl Vinson arrived in the Arabian Sea on Monday to replace the outgoing USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group, which Iran last week warned not to return to the Gulf after departing in late December.
The Stennis was due to return to its home port in San Diego but the Pentagon did not say when that would happen.
Another carrier strike group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, concluded a port visit to Thailand on Tuesday and was now in the Indian Ocean. It is on track to join the Vinson in the Central Command area of operations, which begins in the neighboring Arabian Sea.
.
It is "not unusual to have two carriers in the CENTCOM theater at the same time," a second U.S. military official said.
Another official said there had been two carriers in the Gulf region at least twice in the past 18 months.Tensions between Iran and the United States ratcheted up again in the past week. Iran started an underground uranium enrichment plant and sentenced an American to death for spying. Washington and Europe have stepped up efforts to cripple Iran's oil exports, and Tehran on Wednesday blamed U.S. and Israeli agents for killing an Iranian nuclear scientist.
.
Israel declined to comment on the killing and the United States denied any U.S. role and condemned the attack, in which the scientist was blown up by a bomb attached to his car by a motorbike hitman.Iran had warned the Stennis not to re-enter the Gulf and it is unclear when another U.S. carrier will enter Gulf waters. The Pentagon has suggested only that, sooner or later, a carrier will pass through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf."We routinely operate our ships - all of our ships, all of our types of ships - inside the Arabian Gulf and that will continue," Kirby said.
