Inspired by Egypt, PDP to launch peaceful campaign in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti will kick off a campaign in Srinagar to offer Kashmir her party's vision of a peaceful Jammu & Kashmir on Monday, February 14. The PDP says its campaign is inspired by events in Egypt.

"Some events have global impact. September 11 led to the rejection of violence and terror. Egypt shows peaceful protests can lead to positive change," said Mehbooba Mufti.

Going well beyond it's argument for self-rule in the state, the PDP leadership made a power-point presentation of its vision on Kashmir that calls for developing the state as (i) a free trade zone; (ii) a strategic gateway between the various countries of south Central Asia, Saarc included, through a sort of new Silk Route.

The PDP campaign might be focused on improving things in the state, but wittingly or unwittingly it's vision document makes China a party to the discourse on the Kashmir issue. The 22 seats in the Jammu & Kashmir assembly, kept vacant all these years for the people of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, includes Gilgit, the only proof of Kashmir of 1947.

PDP gives away J&K parts to China in slide show

SRINAGAR: In an act that might stir a political storm in New Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir's main opposition party, People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti, has ceded both Aksai Chin and the Karakoram region to China on a map shown in its 'vision on Kashmir' power-point presentation.

Going well beyond it's argument for self-rule in the state, the PDP leadership made a power-point presentation of its vision on Kashmir in which PDP has accepted China's sovereignty over Aksai Chin and the Karakoram region on a map super-imposed on a collage of foreign currency notes. This contradicts the official Indian stand that states all these areas are Indian territory.

Besides, PDP has tacitly acknowledged China's stakes and role in Kashmir in its vision document. The PDP wants Srinagar to be connected to Yarkand in China, and beyond that to the Karakoram highway, constructed by China after Pakistan ceded it some 4,000 sq km of Kashmir in 1963. It's deemed illegal by India. This is the first time a mainstream political party has acknowledged Chinese role or presence in Kashmir.

China's moves in Kashmir have picked up momentum in the past few years. While the stapled Visa issue has been widely reported, the strategic community in India is more alarmed by China's presence in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, where China is building the 7,000 mw Bunji Hydroelectric Project. Also on the anvil is a proposed railway line along the six-lane Karakoram highway. Few doubt the ability of the Chinese to accomplish this after its staggering achievement of a railway line to Lhasa.

The Northern Areas has now been incorporated in Pakistan and renamed Gilgit-Baltistan. In 2010, Pakistan, after 63 years of direct rule, gave the province an elected assembly. One of the first comments of the elected chief minister, Mehndi Shah, was, "Gilgit was never a part of Kashmir."

This Pakistan government move is consistent with the line that the 72,000 sq km that form this province were never a part of the Hari Singh's state of Jammu & Kashmir, citing the 1935 treaty of the Maharaja leasing the territory to British India for 60 years. The fact that Mountbatten terminated this treaty in July 1947 and returned Gilgit to Hari Singh is ignored. As is the fact that Article 6 of the Sino-Pakistan treaty giving the Karakoram region to China clearly states that the treaty will be "renegotiated pending the settlement of the Kashmir Dispute."

My Idea is to let her start such movement on any square which she selects . Once people gather there seal that area from all side. let them stay at same place for 10 days without food and water and without sanitation. her 7 generations to come will also not think something like this.

This lady suffering of "Stockholm Syndrome" forgot one small detail: India is not Egypt and Kashmir is just a small part of India, so basically its Indians vs Kashmiri separatists. I hope she will learn from the last "uprising" a few months ago and it's end result.

Map row: Chidambaram warns of action against PDP

SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Union home minister P Chidambaram reacted sternly to the People's Democratic Party's propaganda map showing parts of Jammu & Kashmir as parts of China and Pakistan. The home minister told Times Now on Sunday that the PDP had made a big mistake, and if it did not correct it, he would take action.

PDP's PowerPoint presentation on Saturday, first reported in TOI, showed portions of the state in green and red—to signify their possession by Pakistan and China—during a party conclave in Srinagar. In Jammu, CM Omar Abdullah slammed the PDP for instigating Kashmiris to violence. and said the opposition appeared to want the army back in the state. "When Mehbooba Mufti asks Kashmiris to replicate Egypt, it looks as if she wants army rule in the state since her party is in the opposition," Omar told TOI.

Mehbooba, who is PDP chief, had lauded the army's role in Egypt and even tacitly asked Kashmiris to rise in peaceful demonstrations for a change of government.

Drawing parallels between the Cairo protests and last year's summer unrest in Kashmir, Mehbooba said that while the people in the most populous Arab country were not accused of anything, the leadership in J&K was dubbing protesters drug addicts and Lashkar-e-Taiba agents.

"This shows her mind is focused on grabbing power in the state through unfair means. But, fortunately, the people of the state have understood their (PDP's) mechanizations and won't be swayed and take to violence for petty politics," said Omar.

Mehbooba, according to news agencies, said the map was being taken out of context and had been shown for the convenience of Kashmiris. PDP chief spokesman Nayeem Akhtar denied that the party president ever said that the people of Kashmir should also resort to peaceful demonstrations to get the state government changed with the army's support.

J&K finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather and law and parliamentary affairs minister Ali Muhammad Sagar also expressed anguish at Mehbooba's statement. They said the PDP and its leadership should come clean in the matter and clarify whether they want the army to take over the state and let democracy be shelved.

Nothing wrong with our Kashmir map: PDP

People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday hit back at Home Minister P Chidambaram, who had warned the party of stern action over its controversial propaganda map.

The map, displayed by PDP during a power point presentation on Saturday, showed Aksai Chin and Karakoram region as part of China. These areas were painted in red while Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was depicted in green.

"I have high regard for Home Minister P Chidambaram and I would request him to concentrate on other issues rather then pointing out what the PDP has done. He should look into the overall impact of what we have done," Mufti said.

"While talking of Jammu and Kashmir being made a free economic zone, the party has shown the areas under PoK and China as part of Jammu and Kashmir. We would like these areas to be included in the final resolution of the issue of J&K," Mufti said in a telephonic conversation with rediff.com.

The PDP chief also advised Chidambaram to "look into the frequent incursions by China in Ladakh region in the last couple of years".

"The Centre is getting bullied by China," she alleged

She also took on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, asking him to concentrate on the state administration rather than get involved in matters that were under the purview of the central government.

"He has made a mess of the state. He should let the Centre handle such major issues," she said.

Speaking on the controversial propaganda map, Mufti said that it was the first time any political party in the state had demanded that parts of the state held by Pakistan and China should be involved in resolving the Kashmir issue.

"We are not apologetic about our belief. The different colours show the areas held by Pakistan and China. We want those areas to be included in the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir problem," she said.

She also denied allegations that she had compared the Kashmir unrest to the mass movement in Egypt, and asked protestors in the Valley to emulate the revolution in the Arab state.

"This allegation is totally false. I have never said so. I only complimented the Egyptian people for the peaceful transition, like the Indian foreign minister did in his statement. The people of Kashmir have been struggling for the last sixty years for the resolution of the issue; so what can I tell them to do," she asserted.

Mufti also urged the home minister to resolve the visa stapling row with China.

"China says that the people of Arunachal Pradesh need no visa. To the people of Jammu and Kashmir, China has been issuing stapled visas. It would be nice if the Centre takes us this issue with China effectively," she said.
