Since we have a 400m range barrel now for 7.62 mm ammo, can we drop the 5.56 mm?
We don't have full scale war any more...but short skirmishes... carrying capacity of ammo is important.. but causalty count is more important... also we have bullet proof jackets now..enemy has them too..5.56 is getting obsolete...

400m range is the eye sight range with respect to iron sights, Not the barrel or the ammunition, The effective range of 1B1 is 650 meters with help of optics ..

OFB 5.56mm can shred level 3 BP plate even at long range, 5.56mm has many variant, Some people are stuck in viatnam era with respect to 5.56mm, It also be noted that TAR-21 and M4 in SF also use 5.56mm of Indian origin.

7.62nato is being over-hyped at media for weapon sale sakes, People don`t get killed because they get shot by a bullet regardless of what diameter, But its important where they got hit, Hit placement is the key..

For India? Didn't understand what he had meant...but seems offer is for India. Though US too is looking for a 7.62 , but I think he is reffering to India, what do you all think?

It would be interesting to see if OFB bases it's new 7.62X51 on INSAS or on MCIWS or on FN FAL?

Both SAN Swiss Arms AG (owned by SIG Sauer GmbH) and SIG Sauer Inc. have the SG750 and SIG 716 respectively for a while now.

Interesting observations .... I think 7.62 also seems to be in limelight because of;

1. Stopping power from AK variants vs 5.56 rifles

2. In Afghanistan, engagements are at long ranges even for ordinary troops, where 556 rounds dont simply have enough juice.

Both rounds have their qualities, Speaking strictly as per rules Infantry men don`t carry - out engagement beyond 200ms as most of the engagement with iron sights happen within 200ms, But again in some cases a common infantry man engage target beyond 400ms ..

For engagement beyond rifleman`s range its the Marksman ..

Why aren't our guns marketed to civilian markets in foreign countries? Is their laws in our constitution that prevents it?

Ishapore 2A/2A1 is popular in the West. Though its due to the legacy of the Enfields, I believe INSAS can also gain some attention in there. Any thoughts?

What is the practical range of engagement in times of war?
If the enemy is beyond 600..so what is going to happen.

If DRDO and OFB can develop MCIWS then developing 7.62x51 variant of MCIWS should be 6 months job especially lot of components can be manufactured on existing production lines of INSAS and FN FAL.

For an infantry man its no longer than 200ms, In counter insurgency its even lesser in practice ..

If a target of opportunity comes at 600ms, Than simply call for sharpshooter within the squad ..

It would do good to our armed forces if they drop 7.62x51 and stick with our own 5.56 with increased grain weight, it would do great job. Don't forget that you may see ak rifles with troops in Counter insurgency operations but paras are the ones who engages terrorists and their preferred weapon is tavor. If 5.56 is good for tavors then what is wrong with our weapons being chambered in the same? For sniper and machine guns, we should develop a new round. In my opinion 9x51 is good for snipers and machine guns. Since most of the battles takes place within 200 mts 9mm can shred terrorist bodies to pieces.

Its seems improved variant is now being used in mass at CT areas, But still their are doubts as some units simply painted older 1B1 with black paint ..

Seen during recent Encounter in Kashmir. May be for field trials.

INSAS MK1C
Operator belongs to SOG J&K POLICE
Kunal, that is regular insas, foldable butt version. The metal pipe construction of the butt is quite visible. The Mk1c has a flat polymer butt profile.
