What about fuel cell technology, it can also produce a lot of energy.

@visitor I hope you were talking about Sukhoi 35 because F-35 is an American plane. Anyway, have by introduced yourself in the forum. You can easily do it by creating a "Hello" thread in Introduction and Greetings section.

have we done a testing and use of uav from aircraft carriers (current and past) and what is the planning for such on the new beauties.

I think currently not. Yet many foreign and indigenous projects are underway.
Like Rustom(not sure), Predator, Avenger, AURA and NRUAV etc..

US Unwilling to Offer Help in Nuclear Propulsion Technology for New Warship

India, US talk aircraft carrier tech, but key point off menu

NEW DELHI: The bilateral strategic clinch may be getting tighter but the US is unwilling to offer help to India in nuclear propulsion technology for the proposed construction of its largest-ever warship, the 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier INS Vishal.

Even as the joint working group on aircraft carrier technology cooperation (JWGACTC) met in India from February 15 to 18, top defence ministry sources on Friday said the ongoing bilateral discussions did not include "any nuclear propulsion" for INS Vishal.

The second meeting of the JWGACTC, led by Vice admiral G S Pabby (controller warship production and acquisition) and his American counterpart Rear admiral Thomas J Moore (programme executive officer of aircraft carriers), did discuss various aspects of cooperation in technologies connected to aircraft carriers, including EMALS (electromagnetic aircraft launch systems).

But as per the terms of reference for the JWGACTC "only conventional propulsion systems" (gas turbines or diesel-electric systems) are under discussion as of now. "The US has its own export control laws... nuclear propulsion is not on the table," said an MoD source.

The Manohar Parrikar-led defence acquisitions council had sanctioned an initial Rs 30 crore as seed money for INS Vishal in May 2015.

Since then, India has issued RFI (request for information) for design consultancy to several foreign shipyards.

But it is felt nuclear propulsion will make better sense for greater operational endurance. For instance, the maximum range of India's 44,500-tonne carrier INS Vikramaditya is around 7,000 nautical miles. Whereas, the range of an American Nimitz-class supercarrier - the US has 10 of them, all over 100,000 tonnes - is unlimited and it can operate for over 20 years without refueling due to nuclear propulsion.

As Expected.
They are very sensitive towards word "nuclear".
Well, India has made reactor of Arihant before so miniaturising reactor here won't much difficult.

I think the civil nuclear cooperation agreement between the two came in the way. As regards the submarine reactor, it is an open secret that Russian engineers fixed many problems which were beyond the BARC/ DRDO people.
Again it will be an enormous challenge for indians if they want to go it alone.

I think there has been much jumping of the gun by the reporters here. There was never any plan or hope to receive nuclear propulsion technology from US. The only reason why the US is being brought onboard is because of the EMALS technology that we wish to incorporate into our future carriers. That's it.

Reason for groups like the JWGACTC to be formed is because the incorporation of concepts like EMALS includes a significant level of technology-sharing (not necessarily transfer) and local capacity-building measures and infrastructure consultancy. The JWG is the body that's going to assess all these needs and prepare reports.

The US already supplies the propulsion for conventional carriers like the under-construction IAC-1 Vikrant, which uses the General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines. There is talk of a 2nd Vikrant-class carrier (nothing finalized yet) so the topic may have been related to that.

IAC-2's nuclear propulsion was always meant to be indigenous, there is simply no other way. BARC & DAE are already working on improved reactors for future nuclear submarines and now the carrier reactor project will also be pursued. It's going to take some time, but as far as IAC-2 is concerned, we have quite a lot of time.

Civil nuclear deal has nothing got to do with it , US was never supposed to help us nor we need her help. We can build our own . Russian engineers didn't fix anything , S2 was designed and engineered in India. We may have taken their help in designing the core geometry initially , our first boat S1 was build on our own but it was rumored to have had reactivity control problems for the the burn up which probably has been solved as far as S2 core is concerned it was probably designed and engineered in India and it seems there has been no problem so far .

Ashok Parthasarthi, a former science and technology adviser to the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, sums up the extent of Russian assistance: “India's first indigenous nuclear submarine, INS Arihant...would have just been impossible to realise without Russia’s massive all-round consultancy, technology transfer, technical services and training, technical 'know-how' and 'show-how,' design of the submarine as a whole, and above all numerous operational 'tips' based on 50 years of experience in designing, building and operating nuclear submarines.”

According to Bidwai, “Scores of Russian engineers were sent to India to aid the DAE and DRDO....It was the Russians who supplied the vital designs, precision equipment based on their VM-5 reactor, and the technology of miniaturising the reactor.”

And if there were any doubts about the extent of Russian involvement, they were cast away on July 26, 2009 when 143 Russian engineers, designers and consultants – all participants in the project – attended the boomer’s launch ceremony at Visakhapatnam on the east coast.

But doesn't the deal prohibits US to transfer defence related reactor technology and enriched uranium to India?

Vikramaditya - MiG-29K
IAC-1 Vikrant - MiG-29K, N-LCA Mk-2 (if ready by then, otherwise more 29Ks)
IAC-2 Vishaal - Rafale-M

If additional Vikrant-class CVs are sought, Rafale-Ms will still be the obvious choice for any post-2020 requirement.

In the distant future (around 2030 or further down the line), an N-FGFA or N-AMCA will make it onto the Vishaal-class carriers.

N-LCA Mk.2s could be seen on both Vikrant & Vishaal-class carriers.
There is heavy speculation around INS Vishal. Let me make it clear that the design of ship is not finalized. It is quite possible that the ship looks like a carbon copy of Vikrant once it is final.

It is clear that India will have to instal a locally designed nuclear reactor on the ship if India goes that way. However the difficulties are numerous. A ship this size requires a reliable power plant. I doubt Navy will take a risk with the power plant.

I am not clear about US's stance on transfer of military-nuclear technology to India in the wake of signing of civil-nuclear deal. The deal permits transfer of dual-use (civil-military) reactor technology.
Can someone tell under what circumstances the deal goes void apart from India reneging on moratorium on atom bomb tests and denying IAEA guys access to civilian reactor facilities?

There is zero possibility of an American nuclear reactor on INS Vishal.
Such transfers are only possible for very close US allies like UK.

A lot of Indians are misreading India-US cooperation.
If It was so warm as some people have mistakenly assumed, USA will not be giving military aid to Pakistan.

I doubt India can put all its bets on USA.

We should have used INS Arihant reactor to power the aircraft carrier.....
No need of catapult system mig's don't use it...Catapult is used only if we buy rafale-M or f-18's....
