Russia's Sevmash shipbuilding company, which is refitting the INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, has completed an important training phase for the Indian sailors who will crew the upgraded ship.
On Wednesday, 4 April, certificates were presented to the final team of specialists of the second group. According to the schedule, this group included crew members who will be working in the INS Vikramaditya's engineering department.
RG was told by the press service of the Russian shipbuilder that the contract for the repairs and refitting of the ship envisages training the Indian crew that will later work on the ship. The first group, including 152 Indian specialists, took the training course in Russia from 14 March to 4 November 2011. The second group (112 trainees) started on 1 September 2011. The Indian sailors lived in the town of Pushkin near St Petersburg for four months, brushing up their theoretical knowledge at the military training and scientific centre of the Russian Naval Academy, and then moved to Severodvinsk on 1 January 2012.
Having completed the scheduled training phase, they packed their bags again, this time to return home to India. But they will be back in Severodvinsk very soon for practical studies on board the ship, because the INS Vikramaditya is scheduled to start sea trials this summer. By that time, the final, biggest group of 405 naval students from India will have completed their training. The final team of INS Vikramaditya crew members is expected to arrive in St Petersburg in late April.
