Sea trials of Russian nuke sub for India on schedule news

Khabarovsk: Final sea trials of a Russian Akula II-class nuclear-powered submarine, slated for lease to the Indian Navy, are continuing on schedule, a shipyard official said Friday. The submarine had been involved in a fatal accident last year resulting in the loss of 20 lives.
The vessel resumed sea trials on 10 July in the Sea of Japan following extensive repairs.
"The resumed sea trials are going according to schedule," the official at the Amur shipyard said, without specifying when the tests would be completed.
Earlier, defence officials had indicated that the trials would continue for about two weeks.
India has reportedly paid $650 million for a 10-year lease of the 12,000-ton K-152 Nerpa, a Schucka-B class (NATO: Akula II) nuclear-powered attack submarine. Such vessels are considered the quietest and deadliest of all Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines.
On 8 November 2008, while the Nerpa was undergoing sea trials in the Sea of Japan, its on-board fire suppression system went off, releasing the deadly Freon gas into the sleeping quarters, killing three crewmembers and 17 shipyard workers.
The repairs have cost an estimated 1.9 billion rubles ($60 million), and the submarine has been cleared for final sea trials before being commissioned with the Russian Navy. The vessel is due to be leased to the Indian Navy by the end of 2009.
"Following new official state sea trials in the summer, the sub will be put in service with the Navy in the fall of this year," Russian naval sources had said earlier. The Nerpa would be leased to the Indian Navy shortly after being commissioned into the Russian Navy, they said.
Construction of the Nerpa submarine began in 1991, but remained suspended for over a decade due to a lack of funding, until Indian finance revived its construction.

Akula most probably comes with the club missiles. It is actually a platform for testing the Sub launched Bhramos. And it can also do whatever we want. We can use it for practise or as a weapon.

it will have empty VLS tubes, which can be used for Marcos action,

I have heared that Akula is to be used as an Attack Submarine while, ATVs will be used as Missile Submarines. Is it true?
Range of Missiles to be carried on-board ATV has been reported to be 700 km, will this be sufficient to fire the missile and remain un-detected?

Akula is an SSN [Nuclear Attack Sub] & Arihant is a SSBN [Nuclear missile sub] so that's right. Both have been designed for different tasks.
Agni-3SL with a range of 3500 kms is being developed.

I do have questions with this Akula-II submarine.
1- What is main intention for leasing- is it just for training? what other operations it can take up? can it be used for spying on other countries like Chinese SSBNs?
2- Can we use our own weapons?
3- Can we use it against our enemy during war or are we supposed to take permission from Russia?
4- Who is gonna be responsible if the submarine is damaged?

Training, testing and fighting.
SSNs don't spy. ASW Corvettes and Frigates do that. SSNs just remain silent.
We may have our own torpedoes. But, the more modern weapon systems will be Russian.
We can use it no problems. Russia may send more subs if needed.
We are. We will have to pay for damages or loss of the sub because its under a lease.

No. Electronics may not be available to us. We may use our own. But, the entire sub will be first rate. They may build better versions as a follow on. But, that in no way entails the sub is downgraded.
One of the main tasks of SSNs is to spy . You don't spy with military surface vessels roaming around in Territorial or Exclusive Economic Zone waters. Subs are perfect for this. They can collect SIGINT, Retrieve/Insert human spys or commandos safely(but have to stay at a depth of 15m for AKula, 16m is fully submerged), listen to enemy subs and surface vessels' noise signature etc..

The NewYork Times reported late on Tuesday that the two submarines had been in the area for several days. The newspaper quoted Defense Department officials as saying one of the Akula-class vessels remained 320 kilometers (200 miles) off the coast, while the location of the second was not clear.
One of the submarines is an Akula II nuclear-powered attack submarine, considered the quietest and deadliest of all Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines.
A Pentagon spokesman acknowledged the report. "We have no comment about this. But we are aware of what is happening," he told RIA Novosti by telephone.
Defense Department officials expressed concern to the New York Times about the presence of the vessels due to the unexpected nature of their appearance, but were not worried about the U.S. military's ability to track them.
A U.S. military expert told the paper that it was probably 15 years since two submarines had carried out such a patrol.
That assessment was rejected by a high-ranking Russian Navy source, who told RIA Novosti that the submarines' presence near U.S. waters was not unusual as Russian vessels had never stopped patrolling the world's ocean.
"Even during the fleet's most difficult times in the mid-1990s, Russian submarines put to sea on active alert for patrols. This practice continues to this day," the official said.
The Russian Navy has been more active in recent years, increasing its presence on the world's oceans and carrying out exercises with foreign navies, including in Venezuela last December.
In mid-July the Russian Navy launched two missiles from submarines in the Arctic Ocean. The test was hailed by an intelligence source as a success as the United States had not known about the location of the submarines prior to the launch.
The source said that the launch area, covered by ice floe, was heavily patrolled by Russian attack submarines and the Americans were unable to detect the arrival of two strategic submarines before the launch.
