Its not a new news that India is facing a full blown crisis concerning its british- rule era infrastructure.

The Government is trying to upgrade the infrastructure by getting FDI from other countries like Japan, China, USA etc.
However, i feel that these initiatives even though are helpful, the govt cannot do the work alone just by getting FDI .

Im of the opinion that the Government should launch a mega Infra Upgrade Project ASAP.
As far as funding is concerned, we could cut the expenses on socialist schemes of UPA like Food Security etc .

The labor for this project could be obtained by associating this scheme with the MGNREGA ,
which would provide employment and upgradation at the same time, aka both socialist and capitalist policies in one scheme.

Even though this kind of project will be massively expensive, the govt must take such action if they want to achieve the economic growth agenda they have promised to people of India. This kind of project may take 10 or even 20 years to fully complete, but its need is of outmost priority.

Any other alternatives or opinions are welcome.

As per P.Chidambaram's report to World bank India is 1 trillion dollar infrastructure deficit in the next five years starting from 2013. Food security bill costs roughly 4 billion USD per year.
If we assume for a minute what PC says is correct cutting out Food security bill even for 10 years will not make a dent in the deficit.

I don't think Modi's calculation will be based on PC's calculation, we will have to wait and see.

just for my clarification, other than railways is there any big ticket items left out from british era(leaving out remote villages) which needs to be upgraded?

I personally think that even though rail infrastructure is old, it can take the pressure for some more time. Right now, we need to upgrade our Energy and electrical services to woo foreign investors. last year i read an article that said that let alone foreign companies, even Indian companies were shifting their operations to locations in far east like Malaysia, Indonesia, as they have better electricity services than that of India. We must upgrade these.

not that Im saying Railways shouldn't be upgraded, but the goods service can be slowed down, while passenger service should br upgraded with current plans.
