New Delhi: Terming the proposed induction of two nuclear submarines into the Indian Navy as a "cause of great concern", Pakistan has said it is taking "necessary measures" to restore the strategic balance in the emerging situation.

Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Asif Sandila said Islamabad can neither afford nor plans to match the Indian Navy in terms of numerical strength.

"The strategic dimension of India's naval buildup is a cause of concern not only for us but for the entire Indian Ocean Region (IOR). I feel nuclearisation of the IOR does not augur well for peace and stability in the region.

"We are mindful of this development and taking necessary measures to restore the strategic balance," Sandila told American weekly Defensenews in an interview.

Pak has said their defence employment strategy is not exclusively Indo-centric and is based on achieving certain capabilities. Reuters
He was asked how Pakistan would respond to the Indian nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed ballistic submarines.

India is scheduled to induct two nuclear submarines in the near future which will include its indigenous INS Arihant and the Russian-leased Akula class INS Chakra.

Experts feel that to match Indian nuclear submarine programme, Pakistan would seek help of the Chinese.

"Pakistan and China are militarily very close and they may seek help of the PLA Navy to deploy its nuclear submarines in its waters to match Indian capabilities," Commander (retd) Sunil Chauhan said on the possible measures to be taken by Pakistan.

Sandila said his country can "neither afford nor do we plan to match it (Indian Navy) in terms of numerical strength, be it the number of Pakistan Navy personnel or platforms."

"We have our own employment strategy"¦ It is not exclusively Indo-centric. It is essentially based on achieving certain capabilities that we hope will help us deliver in the hour of need," he said.

Surprisingly, no other IOR nation is whining about us so much as Pakistan...

Pakistan has good reasons to be concerned.

She can never get a nuclear submarine because, firstly, she does not have to money to buy one and then maintain it and neither anyone will trust her with a nuclear submarine.

At best, she can station a Chinese nuclear submarine.

They wished to have a long range submarine just like PNS Ghazi in 1971 to go around India and have the ability to strike eastern fleet..

If PN determined to have a N-Sub they might lease one from China, Where IN need to focus on Hunter Killer System to hunt down N-SUBs..

Some thing tells me they always wanted to have a N-Submarine, India`s growing power is just an Excuse to push there program for N-SUB..

DK, you are wrong man, Chines do patrol they just come out, then open their missile doors, enough to get spy satellite some pics and then go inside the secret mountain pen to hide again. This is their patrol.

At the same time I am not underestimating their submarine or its unclear missile.

We don't need so much a nuclear sub marine to shoo the neighbors off. While our step is to buckle for China and future enemies (there will be, as we grow in power); this gives Pakistan goose bumps and they will surely make efforts to match us.
What is needed against Pakistan is good surveillance in the waters keeping away surprises and then a tight choke for them whenever required.

Except the bolder part, i agree with you regarding the rest. We actually do need such subs, because it also acts as a "psychological" deterrence against are enemies.

It means that the chinese is more worried about renegade misssiles than that other nations may nuke China. Willingness and capacity is two different ball games.

What really scares me is not that the PN might lease a nuke sub, but that due to their nearly bankrupt economy they won't be able to maintain it and end up poisoning the Arabian sea, oh well! might as well enjoy my beach sojourns in Goa while the water is still non-radioactive!:p

When the P5 members asks the grasseaters why they need a nuclear submarine when their
Diesel subs can reach India with no problem . What will be the answer? Exclude P5 members
where will they get the sub from? What will happen when they share it with north Korea ?

yeah let Chines give their nuke submarine to Pakistan, there are enough corrupt persons in Pakistani Military on Uncle's payrole to secretly stare into Uncle's ship yard. I am sure Uncle will pay lot of $$$$$$$$$$ for that Chines sub (BTW some military doctor was the one who helped uncle to find OBL).
