Army to hone war fighting skills with United States

New Delhi, Sep 11, 2012, DHNS:

Special forces from India and the US are all set to test each other's ability to carry out commando operations on the Himalayan heights next month.

Indian Army commandos will engage with their counterparts from US Special Forces in a 20-day-long mock war game at the Special Forces regiment at Nahan in Himachal Pradesh.

Beginning October 15, exercise "Vajra Prahar" with the US will continue till November 4.

Participation from India will be at platoon level, said Army officers. The objective of the exercise, however, has been kept under wraps.

Exercises with the US Army have become a regular affair for India but the core theme varies each time. "Vajra Prahar" will be the third one in 2012 as it was preceded by "Shatrujit" and "Yudh Abhyas".

The last exercise, "Shatrujit", took place in the USA in April where close to 200 Indian troops participated. A month ago, exercise "Yudh Abhyas" took place in Jaisalmer under the South Western Command in which the US fielded its top-notch armoured vehicle Stryker whereas India used its mechanised regiments.

"Vajra Prahar" is preceded by exercise "Maitree" with Thailand in the forests of eastern India. The 15-day exercise focusing on counter-insurgency operations in rural and urban settings began on Tuesday at Ramgarh near Ranchi in Jharkahnd.

While 45 Thai Army personnel, including five officers, are taking part in the exercise, the Indian side is represented by a platoon from the grenadiers. Earlier in the year, Thailand participated in a table top exercise with the Navy and the Thai prime minister was the Guest of Honour at the Republic Day event.

Platoon level, but Special Operations so often are conducted with small units. If you want to destroy targets with bigger formations, call a Ranger Battalion. :)
I am hoping for a Brigade level exercise with foreign troops. :D

When can we expect some real action on our Western sector in order to remove the thugs from Kashmir soil once for all?

They use sensors....like we have played the shooting game in nintendo stations when we use our shooter gun to aim and kill the ducks.it's just an advanced version of that.

why brigade level ?

do we want their boots on our soil ? ..... what we want is technology and know how - later it can be an exchange

but we have the mass to do it ourselves .... we dont need their numbers do we ?

we wanna keep their numbers small

Emotive nationalism first before real learning... I think the more participants a war game has the more realistic it is.

Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System or MILES is used by the US military and other armed forces around the world for training purposes. It uses lasers and blank cartridges to simulate actual battle.

Individual soldiers carry small laser receivers scattered over their bodies, which detect when the soldier has been illuminated by a firearm's laser. Each laser transmitter is set to mimic the effective range of the weapon on which it is used. When a person is "hit", a medic can use the digital readout to determine which first aid method to practice.

Different versions of MILES systems are available both within the US and internationally. The capabilities of the individual systems can vary significantly but in general all modern systems carry information about the shooter, weapon and ammunition in the laser. When this information is received by the target, the target's MILES system determines the result of the 'hit' using a random number roll and a table lookup. As a result a MILES emulating an M16 rifle cannot destroy an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), but could still kill a commander visible in the hatch of the vehicle. Vehicles are typically outfitted with a belt of laser sensors while dismounted troops often wear a vest or harness with sensors as well as a 'halo' of sensors on their helmets. Often these MILES systems are coupled with a real-time datalink allowing position and event data to be transmitted back to a central site for data collection and display. More sophisticated systems for tanks and APCs exist that use various techniques (including scanning lasers and coupled radio systems) to allow more precise targeting of armored vehicles.
