India keeping an eye on China’s moves in Indian Ocean (Lead)

August 20th, 2009

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) India was closely watching China’s “moves” to increase its military prowess in the Indian Ocean and would take “adequate measures” if its internal security is threatened, Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju said here Thursday.

He agreed that being a “bigger power” China will take measures to safeguard interests but added that it should not be “intrusive”.

“I think China being a bigger power will make its moves and if we sense a threat to our internal security we will take some counter measures,” said Raju.

“We need to give them (China) a benefit of doubt that they are also in their quest to safeguard their sea lanes of communication because their energy resources are passing through the Indian Ocean region.

“They (China) are taking some steps. We have to make sure that it is not intrusive and they will not come into our space. Towards that end we are conscious of what China is doing and we are making adequate measures to make sure that our neighbourhood is not threatened,” added Raju.

Speaking about the Chinese demonstration of its space-based capability by shooting down a satellite early last year, Raju said that India was against militarisation of space.

“If space assets have to be utilised in future, India is also taking adequate steps,” said Raju.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘emerging technologies for sub-conventional conflict and homeland security’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The minister also cautioned about weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of terrorists.

“In future the potential is there for terrorists to get nuclear or biological and chemical weapons, towards which we should take adequate steps… nuclear, biological and chemical warfare is something we are preparing for,” Raju said.

He cited the example of the Nov 26 Mumbai attacks when terrorists used sophisticated weapons.

“Terrorists, militants and insurgents are acquiring advanced weapons and communication equipment. Their methods of warfare are becoming more sophisticated, more complex and more systematically planned. Their objectives are becoming more ambitious, with the intention of inflicting maximum damage.

“In future, we may even see insurgents armed with nuclear devices or biological and chemical weapons, capable of massive destruction in localised areas. The increased range and lethality of weapons as well as changed tactics and small focused insurgent missions will need strategic response from our defence and paramilitary forces,” Raju added.

If there is a war between India and China. The US will supply a lot of ammunition and weapon systems to India covertly. Monetary support too.
It seems India depend on outer help.

On the contrary,if there is a war between India and China. The US won't supply a lot of ammunition, weapon systems and monetary support to China.

China is on his own way.

India want to live with peaceful coexistence.

If China has a different interpretation of what is peaceful coexistence, then it is her problem!
If india really want peaceful coexistence, why indian gvt. support the Tibet separatists?

Not really.

The US wants India's help to keep China busy!!

But then, we love China.

BTW, we pay for any equipment that we buy. We are not like Pakistan living off the munificence of others!!

You are mistaking India for Pakistan.

Pakistan requires US help. The help of the IMF and WB and any other who will fill her coffers and save her from being a failed state.

Not India.

LOOK GUYS I WILL SHARE SOMETHING INDIA MIGHT BE WEAK IN TERMS OF MIL. INFRA.BUT NOT IN TERMS OF FIRE POWER .IN 1962 THINGS WERE DIFFERENT OUR DEPLOYMENT IN WAR WAS MORE POLITICAL THEN TACTICAL. IF READ 62 OPS WHERE EVER WE HAD WELL DEFENED POSITION REDS GOT KICK ON THEIR BUTTS e.g TOWANG OR CHUSUL IN PRESENT SCENARIO OUR FIRE POWER CAN TAKE RED ATTACK PROVIDED IAF COMES INTO ACTION.

Maybe China need another 1962 to change your mindset.
Anytime.

Don't fool yourself.

Ask Vietnam!

I am sure in your mind, China has taken a part of Vietnam as a booty!

What a gas!!!!

Talking about China-Vietnam War, look at what Vietnamese was doing at that time! They were invading Camgbodia, Laos.

Political discrimination and suppressing were also laid on Chinese living in VM!

They had forgotten what china did to help them for their independent war against the US.

With the support of soviets they thought they could do whatever they could do. a shameful little chauvanist power! They made disputes on the border of china too!

China's invasion was just a small penalty. As Deng Xiaoping put it, "little boy is naughty and need a beat on the hip":2guns:

PLA lost many brave soldiers in china-vietnam war. These young heroes didn't bleed in vain, they stoped Vietnamese invasion to Laos and Cambodia.

I know after that, india sent military staffs to vietnam.Did vietnamese teach them some guerrilla tactics which vietnamese learned from red army of Mao Zedong?

A war involving 280,000+ troops is small penalty? You really don't know much, do you?
to some extent, the war in 1979 was china's finland war.

chinese suffered heavy loss, then changed its military doctrine and reformed PLA's structures .
