India and Afghanistan will sign a historic strategic partnership document during President Hamid Karzai's visit to India next week. The agreement will build on the understanding reached between the two countries when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Kabul in May. It will be Afghanistan's first strategic agreement with any country.

While the agreement will include an Indian commitment to assist and train Afghan national security forces, the nature of such assistance will be determined by Kabul, sources said.

India is already running several training courses in India, and increasing the number of Afghan security officials in Indian academies. It may play a larger role in developing the Afghan police force.

The strategic partnership document will institutionalise regular dialogue at the level of the National Security Adviser, which will focus on cooperation in sensitive security aspects of the relationship. Like in other spheres of the partnership, sources said, New Delhi will not look to dictate the pace and scope of security cooperation, and would rather want Kabul to take the lead.

Its a great development. I don't think India has yet brainstormed at the highest level to make an Afghan policy but I think we should now and think of a comprehensive plan to play a role there as the US withdrawal is imminent.
We have to declare a more comprehensive role in Astan. We have to work out a deal with Iran so that we can create logistics for our effort there. We should up development and military aid to Astan and also deploy troops to protect our interest. It's time we stop playing chicken and pander to Paki sensitivities on our presence in Astan. We have to get going.

Yes. Its time to play the Great Game. Land our troops in Afghanistan and maintain troop presence there As far as Pakistan is concerned any regime in Afghan thats not a puppet of Islamabad will be hostile to Islamabad.. Only time in their independent history when pakis and afghans have been on friendly terms was during Taliban.. So pakis will never allow a independent free Afghan. They'll always want a puppet nation. Its in our national interest to see such a thing never happens. We should supplement American and NATO troops in Afghan since our long term interests now coincide..
