Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917 and was the second longest-serving Prime Minister after her father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

She held the Prime Ministers office from January 1966 to March 1977 and from January 14,1980 till her death in 1984.

    GOONGI GUDIA

The Indira Gandhi Memorial trust has organised photographic exhibition on her extraordinary life to commemorate her birth centenary. The exhibition will be held at 1, Safadarjung road, her erstwhile residence in New Delhi and now home to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum.

Curated by Pramod Kumar KG and Deepthi Sasidharan, the photographs in the exhibition have been selected with her birth centenary in mind.

"We selected images, which were hitherto unseen and yet were representative of moments in history." Pramod Kumar KG told Mail Today. "The highlight of the show is a hitherto unseen video of the wedding of Indira Nehru and Feroze Gandhi. The footage shows snippets of the traditional wedding ceremony."

Apart from the photographs (320 of them) and footage, there will also be 44 original objects such as personal diaries, postcards and books on display.

Dubbed a 'goongi gudiya' (deaf doll) when she assumed responsibility as the PM of India, Indira Gandhi soon proved her detractors wrong with her strong and assertive command on the government.

While her decision to declare emergency in India remains controversial, her leadership during the 1971 war with Pakistan is lauded by even those who opposed her. She was known for her strong will and determination with which she firmly shielded India from international pressure especially from USA. Then US president Richard Nixon loathed her for that but she was unfazed.

Pramod Kumar KG, one of the curators of the photographic exhibition says that, one of the privileges of curating the exhibition was to see a visual montage of nearly 100 years of Indian history.

"Born to an elite family, growing up amongst the freedom fighters, daughter of India's first Prime Minister and finally a Prime Minister herself, Indira Gandhi's life was inspirational. We were particularly struck by her ability to work hard and never give up. Her greatest moments of joy as captured in these images seem to be when she is amidst people." Kumar told Mail Today.

Shimla Fiasco,Insurgency in Punjab,Raising Income Tax to more than 90%,Gareebi Hatao Fiasco,Nationalisation of Banks,MRTP and other restrictions that had doomed production sector,Witch-Hunting of Maharajas,EMERGENCY...

These are the things i could remember when i saw her face.If it was not for 1971 Indo-Pak War,she would've labeled as one of the worst prime minister of India but our history books would rarely talk about those things.

the ending of the Privy presus was not even remotely linked to the economy
it evolved from a fear that Indra Gandhi had of Her Highness Maharani Gayatri Devi the rajmata of Jaipur and the fact that the Princes of India had constituted a party called the Concord of the Princes of India as mentioned in below Documentary

there too she made a muck of it she could have
    • asked Pakistan to surrender POK and GB
    • asked the Newly formed Bangladeshi government to transfer CHT to India
    • and taken the Pakistani Army to the ICJ for the atrocities it committed
but NOOOOOOOOOOOO what does she do she singes the Shimla agreement and gives back all the territory to Pakistan least she could have allowed the Army to keep the Haji Pir Pass and buldge thereby keeping Islamabad in the crosshairs of Indian Toopjis

Virtually all gains the army made in '71 were given up due to her incompetence or rather complicity. As for emergency, this woman should have spent the rest of her life behind bars. Not to mention who created Bhiderwale.

    A very mixed legacy.
    Achievements
    ------------------------
71, Pokhran-1, crushing Naxals in Bengal, Green revolution, language policy (many will disagree with this)

    Blunders:
    ---------------
Emergency, bad handling of Bhindranwale, minority appeasement politics, attempted revisionism of history, nepotism

    Grey areas
    ------------------
Move towards socialist policies and natioanlization of Banks was good then but bad now - can't blame her - it was different time and Cold War was ongoing.

Shimla Accord was not entirely her call - big boys (US and USSR) were playing and we were just pawns dependent on them.

    Personal Views
    -------------------------
Congress treated India as their fiefdom and she was the First family and acted such.

    Overall
    -----------
Overall India progressed socially and economically and did not get derailed like Pakistan - so history will judge her kindly.

Not to forget the gains in western front as well. Permanent annexation of Pak territories in Turtuk Tayakshi etc

Apart from capture of key posts in Poonch ex Nangi Tekri Post which was never to be returned to Pak after CFL line converted as LoC. These are territorial gains in 1971 War.

Successful capture of Siachen (op Meghdoot ) is a matter or another discussion

‘Ugly and Stupid’ is how Vijayalakshmi Pandit described Indira Gandhi

Being daughter of independent India’s first Prime Minister comes with a lot of pressure. Especially when you are conditioned from your childhood that democracy is an idea and she should respect it till it comes in way of her hunger for power. If biographers are to be believed, Nehru’s sister Vijayalakshmi Pandit ‘ill-treated’ Kamala Nehru, Indira’s mother who was unwell.

An adolescent Indira reportedly overheard her aunt describe her as ‘ugly and stupid’, which she never forgot. Since the ‘Gandhi’ family is considered the ‘first family’ of India, this sort of insubordination was never forgotten or forgiven. What Indira showed in her political life, she reflected the same in her personal life.

Excerpt from “From Bharata to India: The Rape of Chrysee” by M K Agarwal

So much that when Nehru turned over their ancestral home Anand Bhavan to Pandit, his sister, Indira was appalled. She never forgot the ‘ugly and stupid’ comment. Her resentment for something said decades ago was so strong that she denied her aunt to stay one last time at Anand Bhavan, her ancestral home too, before Indira, as the Prime Minister of India, handed over the property to Government of India to be turned into a memorial.

Excerpt from “Indira Gandhi: A Biography” by Papul Jayakar

It was this sort of vengeance that perhaps dictated Indira Gandhi’s political and personal life, however unfortunate.

I will add the "spiritual angle" to Indira Gandhi's journey. There is a talk by Shraddhalu Ranade from Rishi Aurobindo's ashram in youtube. In that, Ranade claims that Indira Gandhi for some time was under influence of Mother of Pondicherry ashram. The mother found her to be a good medium and for some time the Mother worked through her. After Pakistani army surrendered in Bangladesh in 1971, the Mother apparently had asked her to attack Pakistan on the western border but Indira did not listen.

Very interesting claim which will most probably not be counted as "history" for a long time to come.

You may want to add 90%+ Income Tax to gain funds for Congress, she virtually taught people how to dodge taxes, generate black money and just stop the development.
