Yes, it has smaller dimensions (length of ship) and displaces around 5,000 tons less.

But the design is very modern and space-efficient, allowing it to carry a bigger number of aircraft than Vikramaditya. The sleek island design offers around 2,000 square meters bigger flight deck than Vikramaditya. The engines are also of the gas-turbine type, a street ahead of the steam boilers you find on the ex-Gorshkov.

Radars, electronics, combat-management systems, everything is considerably newer & better in comparison.
So you say Vikrant is better than Vikram ?

Navy’s carrier design blunder and future of SHAR air wing
Posted on January 30, 2016 by Bharat Karnad
On Indian Navy again. A knowledgeable source notes that the Vikrant-class carriers, starting with IAC-1, being built at the Hindustan Shipyard in Kochi, have a grievous design flaw that need immediate rectification, failing which they will be disabled from participating effectively in amphibious actions. Specifically, the carrier lacks the ability to support such operations. In contrast the INS Viraat (ex-HMS Hermes) has multiple davits (crane-like machines) that help host four LCVPs (landing vessels) and carry a complement of 750 Special Forces troops with equipment. The new Vikrant-class has no such capability. Other than as escort to provide air cover in expeditionary, or from-the-sea, kind of operations, they lack the multi-role capacity for different kind of seaborne missions. At a time when specialized, single mission, platforms are cost-prohibitive, there’s no option — even at this late date — than to suitably modify at least the follow-up carrier of the same class. Until that happens, the navy will have to consider if somehow keeping the Viraat operational for purely amphibious operations and as anti-submarine warfare ship, which twin tasks were the original remit of the Hermes, makes sense.

Then there’s the matter about the Viraat’s Sea Harrier air wing. Where and how will it be deployed? It perhaps could be shifted to the flagship, INS Vikramaditya. Additionally, the Vikrant-class of ACs could be modified to make it more lethal by having it carry large quantities of Cruise missiles, like the Brahmos or, better still, K-15/Shouryas in containers — an innovation the Russian Navy has already implemented. The question then becomes whether the carrier hull can take it, or will it need considerable strengthening. Cruise missile-arming will make the Indian-made carriers more versatile in an environment where one can expect a much larger, more potent, PLA Navy presence in the Indian Ocean in the years ahead.

Is this guy a total idiot? INS Vikrant is going to be an AIRCRAFT CARRIER, not an LHD/Amphibious dock.

Completly stupid anaysis.

Our defence managment should have their own media and information outlet to avoid this kind of stupid article.
Do you remember last year, times of India has swapped names of Chinook and Apache.

Couldn't agree more, thse clowns have no right to call themselves "journalists" for some of the nonsense they write. The sad part is how many people beleive their analysis.

Can anyone provide a comparison between IAC 1 and Vikramaditya.. Then we can be informed and feel proud of indigenous design.

That would take too long. Maybe a separate thread when Vikrant hits sea-trials later this year.

Some comparisons at a glance, from Vikrant's specs on paper-

1. Not sure about what Long range radars are equipped on Vikramaditya, but they arent AESA Radars. Vikrant is being equipped with Two AESA Radars - Selex RAN-40L(400 kms+) and MFSTAR-2248(~300 kms). This gives Vikrant unmatched Surveillance and scouting capabilities. No other Carrier in the World is equipped with 2 AESA.

2. Vikramaditya's operational range is 13,000 kms @ 18 knots . Vikrant's is 15,000 kms atleast on papers

3. Vikramaditya's flight deck is 8093 sq kms. Vikrant's is about 10,000 kms.

4. Bigger Flight Deck means space for more weapons. Vikramaditya will be equipped with about 32 Barak 8. Vikrant would have more than 32 Barak 8 and more CIWS.

5. Vikrant is newer, hence better performance and more reliable.

To suppliment the above I would say that the IAC-1 also has state of the art gas turbine propulsion (compared to the rather old tech that is steam turbines found on the Vikram), the IAC-1 has highly optimised design (naturally) with a superior island design and full provisions for 360" CIWS cover (the IAC-1 is also designed to have 4x76mm rapid guns). Additionally the IAC-1 despite being smaller (by tonnage and about 20 metres shorter) has more below deck space including hanger space. IMHO it will be FAR more pleasant to serve on IAC-1 than on Vikramditya as the interiors will be cutting edge.

Then there will be the electronics, the IAC-1 will have superior combat management capabilties (as desmonstrated on teh P-15As) and as noted by @rohit b3 the sensors coming on the IAC-1 (RAN-40L VSR and the MF-STAR) are absolutely world class and this combination will make the IAC-1 arguably the best equipped (in terms of sensors) in the world.

I think you mean to say 8093 Sq metres and 10,000 sq metres..

Are you sure about flight area numbers?? 8093 sq. kms means a lot. like a square with side length of 89 km !!. It must be 8093 square meter or something else.

Thank you for sharing this. I am so pleased that the construction of this ship is used as a mascot by Skill India. We need to make machining, welding and other trade jobs as desirable as well... it is small touches like this which sets this Govt apart from previous admins.
