India's President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh backed out of scheduled appointments to attend the four-day Global Buddhist Conference that began on November 27. The GBC is being held to mark the 2,600th year of Buddha's enlightenment.

Why did two of India's highest leaders back out of a religious meet?

Ms Patil and Dr Singh backed out because China strongly objected to the Dalai Lama's valedictory address at the GBC.

We are led by a spineless leadership. Our behaviour is being dictated by external powers, like China in this case.

There are so many things at play here...

Why should the PM and President skip a religious event just because the Chinese object to it?

Is China a friend of India that we should care for its political sensitivities?

Does not China host anti-India elements like the ULFA chief and other North East terror insurgents?

Would Dr Singh and Pratibha Patil have cancelled their appointments if this were a Muslim / Christian event? I understand that Buddhists dont make for a great vote bank.

After taking a hard stance on the South China Sea issue, we are back to square one; it seems that we take one step forward and two steps backward. So much for our global power aspirations!

Sign of Cowardness. Both are spineless leaders.

Unfortunately, Your reason is correct. Congress government could have participated if it was related with Non-Indian religions Muslims / Christian. Indian religion is not important for Indian Congress party for some strange reasons.

Our Current congress leadership is weakest since 47. MMS is pupet, President never speaks, another puppet. Rest are not big enough. Sonia madam and Amul Gandhi neither have capability nor intention.

Clone with Chanakya and Sardar Patel GENES needed

Its time India get a leader who combines both the slyness of Chanakya and Sardar Patel. The sad part is no one has guts now. Only in books and stories we can find leader. There was a time, when a political leader request/order or instruction and massess follow. Who will fill this void? If we had used our air-force in 1962 we could have won the war, or brought it to a stalemate!!!!

Some may feel it was spineless, but could it be that they had taken a leaf from the Chinese strategist and used it on the Chinese themselves?

Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.

The government has its hands full in the parliament right now. No need to make a big fuss out of this.

Modi is. But the procedure for him to come up to that level is so dirty that it ruins all the efforts.

This thread is highlighting the obvious. With weak minded "chalta hai" Indians dominating the electoral span, what to expect.
