For a change, a very good response by GoI. This and the Afghan Strategic relationship makes me feel that the GoI is finally waking up to the realities of geopolitics.

In the Near Future, the U.S. Will Be Closely Aligned with Vietnam - By Reihan Salam - The Agenda - National Review Online

New Delhi's abiding interest in Vietnam, though, is in the defense realm. It wants to build relations with states like Vietnam that can act as pressure points against China. With this in mind, it has been helping Hanoi beef up its naval and air capabilities.

Given that Vietnam and India use similar Russian and erstwhile Soviet defense platforms, New Delhi could easily offer defense technologies to Hanoi. Talks are ongoing for India to sell the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, an Indo-Russian joint venture. Such arms could allow Vietnam to project regional power and improve deterrence against China.

The two nations also have stakes in ensuring sea-lane security, as well as shared concerns about Chinese access to the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Hence, India is helping Vietnam to build capacity for repair and maintenance of its defense platforms. At the same time, the armed forces of the two states have started cooperation in areas like IT and English-language training of Vietnamese Army personnel. The two are also sharing their experiences in mountainous and jungle warfare.

Naval cooperation, however, remains the focus. Here, Vietnam has given India the right to use its port of Nha Trang in the south; the Indian Navy has already made a port call. It is not entirely clear what the final arrangement would look like, but the symbolism of this is not lost on China.

Pinghua population as an exception of Han Chinese's coherent genetic structure.

Gan RJ et al.

The Han Chinese is the largest single ethnic group in the world, consisting of ten Chinese branches. With the exception of the Pinghua branch, the genetic structure of this group has been studied extensively, and Y chromosome and mitochondrial (mt)DNA data have demonstrated a coherent genetic structure of all Han Chinese. It is therefore believed that the Pinghua branch, being members of an old branch of the Han Chinese, despite being scattered in and around Guangxi Province where members of the Daic and Hmong-Mien are more prevalent than Han Chinese, is no exception. We have studied 470 individual samples (including 195 males) from Pinghua populations and other ethnic groups (Zhuang, Kam, Mulam, Laka, and Mien) from six areas (Hezhou, Fuchuan, Luocheng, Jinxiu, Sanjiang, and Wuxuan) in the north of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Both mtDNA and the Y chromosomes were typed in these samples. High frequencies of the Y chromosome haplogroups O2a* and O*, which always present at a high frequency among the populations of the southern minorities, were found in Pinghua populations. Only Pinghua populations in Luocheng and Jinxiu maintain the Han frequent haplogroup O3a5a. mtDNA lineages B4a, B5a, M*, F1a, M7b1, and N* were found in Pinghua populations, exhibiting a pattern similar to the neighboring indigenous populations, especially the Daic populations. Cluster analyses (dendrograms, principal component analyses, and networks) of Pinghua populations, the other Han branches, and other ethnic groups in East Asia indicated that Pinghua populations are much closer to the southern minorities than to the other Han branches. Admixture analyses confirmed this result. In conclusion, we argue that Pinghua populations did not descend from Han Chinese, but from southern minorities. The ancestral populations of Pinghua people were assimilated by the Han Chinese in terms of language, culture, and self-identification and, consequently, the Pinghua people became an exceptional branch of Han Chinese's coherent genetic structure.

Abstract

Ethnic Han Chinese is the largest population in the world, accounting for 19 percent. A recent study discovered that there are no pure Han ethnic Chinese and even the concept of ethnic Hans no longer exists according to DNA analysis.

According to Shanghai Evening Post, Xie Xiaodong, assistant professor of the College of Life Science of Lanzhou University, just completed the DNA analysis of minority demographic changes in northwest China.

And this ethnic does not have a distinctive definition. The name was assigned to differentiate from those in the surrounding area."

"We generally think that Han people belong to the middle part of China (Zhongyuan)." In Chinese history, Zhongyuan contained what is now Henan Province, south of Sanxi Province, west of Jiangshu Province and Northwest of Anhui Province.

"Yet in the Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C. - 1100 B.C.) and Zhou Dynasties (1122 B.C. - 256 B.C.), Xizhou (West Zhou) had its capital city in Xian (capital city of Sha'anxi Province) and was definitely part of the Han area. In addition, in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States eras, Qin also originated in Sha'anxi Province, but was instead defined as Rong, a minority." Xie Xiaodong said.

Another interesting phenomenon is that although Chinese people often regard themselves as the "descendants of Yanhuang," research indicates that the Huang Emperor originated from the region near Qinyang and Tianshui in Gansu Province, whereas the Yan Emperor originated from Longdong in the Loess Highlands of Sha'anxi province. These areas were not parts of Zhongyuan. (They were called "Beidi" for a long time.).

As history moved on, even the residents, who once were accurately defined as Hans, also migrated. Because of factors, such as compulsory military service, war turmoil and expatriation, Han ethnic people have never stopped migrating toward the south from the Zhongyuan area.

According to the study, "The fact that no pure ethnic Hans live in China has something to do with long-term, large-scale migration. Over a long time, the surrounding minorities, even people from surrounding countries, have been mixing with Han people."

In addition, it says that "the Kejia people have inherited a very pure culture that used to belong to the Zhongyuan people in ancient history, such as their language and customs which left a strong historical influence. They are the true Zhongyuan people, but they are now existing only as ethnic minority groups."\

Their claim is simple : ALL of South China Sea is ours - No one is allowed to come in Except the chinese.
but WE will build naval ports in Pakistan, build tracts in Myanmar and SriLanka and encircle India and we'll call this fair!!

Well guess what - if the Chinese want to tango in our neighborhood - we'll give them a taste of their own medicine.
My bad- we just did!!!

Vietnam takes dragon by the fangs, says India can explore | Firstpost

Vietnam takes dragon by the fangs, says India can explore

Hanoi: Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang today said India and other foreign nations were welcome to explore hydrocarbons in areas within his country's jurisdiction, as he sought to deepen strategic and defence ties with New Delhi.

Ahead of his maiden state visit to India from Tuesday, President Sang said the objectives of his trip are to continue to strengthen friendship between the two peoples, reinforce, deepen and add greater substance to bilateral strategic partnership.

"This visit takes place in the context that the time- honoured traditional friendship and strategic partnership between Vietnam and India are witnessing strong growth in all areas for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation and development," Sang said.

"We note with satisfaction the fine developments of the strategic partnership between the two countries in all areas, including security – defence," he said.

The high-level visit, which will be closely followed by Beijing, comes at a time when both countries are having their own difficulties with China.

Commenting on the controversy over oil exploration by India in two Vietnamese oil blocks in the South China Sea with Chinese authorities raising objections claiming that it was their area, Sang defended Hanoi's deal with India.

"It is a fact that all cooperation projects between Vietnam and other partners including ONGC in the field of oil and gas are located on the continental shelf, within the exclusive economic zone and under the sovereign rights and jurisdiction of Vietnam, entirely in conformity with international laws, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea," he said.

"We welcome foreign companies to work with Vietnamese partners in oil and gas projects on the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of Vietnam and in conformity with Vietnamese laws," Sang said

The Chinese claim on the South China Sea has been rejected by both India and Vietnam, saying as per the UN the blocks belong to Vietnam. India has also made it clear that its state-owned firm would continue to explore in the resource-rich South China Sea.

The President said Vietnam was also committed to protecting the legitimate interests of foreign companies which have invested in the country.

"Vietnam commits and is responsible for protecting the rights and legitimate interests of foreign companies doing business in Vietnam," the 62-year-old leader, also a politburo standing member of the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam, said.

Asked if Beijing was overbearing in its attitude towards Hanoi, the Vietnamese President said that his country hoped that China's fast paced development would contribute positively to peace, stability and progress.

"China is a country with a growing role and influence in the region and the world. We hope that China's development will contribute positively to peace, stability and development in the region and the world," he said.

China and Vietnam fought a brief war in 1979 and according to analysts, Hanoi has grown wary of the Middle Kingdom's growing economic and military might.

But the Vietnamese President sought to down play this.

"China is an important and close neighbouring country of Vietnam," he said, adding that Hanoi attached great importance to the development of good neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation with China, which constitutes a priority in its foreign policy.

Sang noted that Vietnam and China have established a comprehensive strategic partnership and that Chinese leaders have stressed on their desire to "deepen the multi-sided cooperation with Vietnam and working together to satisfactorily settle disputes through peaceful negotiations on the basis of respect for international laws."

On the significance of his upcoming visit to India and the topics on his agenda, Sang said he will exchange views with the Indian leaders on means and ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields, including coordination at regional and international fora with a view to uplifting Vietnam-India relations to be commensurate with the vast potentials of the two countries and expectations of their peoples.

"This visit will also help strengthen the close and reliable relations between the two countries' leaders, which serve as a firm foundation for promoting cooperation among ministries, agencies and localities in the near future," the Vietnamese President said.

He said the strategic ties between Vietnam and India should be enhanced, taking into consideration the changing global scenario.

"In the current context, cooperation in this field should be enhanced to cope with challenges, such as terrorism, transnational crimes, maritime security and safety, including the increased friendly exchanges between the two armed forces.

This is completely in line with the regional trend of peace and cooperation," he said.

The Vietnamese President noted that the time-honoured traditional friendship and strategic partnership between Vietnam and India have been expanded and deepened, evidenced by the increased meetings and exchanges of visits between high-level leaders and Ministries in politics, defence- security, finance, human resources training and Science and Technology.

Indian Navy in South China Sea

:frusty:

India has ruled out increasing its naval presence in the South China Sea, saying it is just concerned about uninterrupted and safe passage of its ships for trade. The Defence Minister A K Antony today, however, said that India will keep visiting these waters for naval excercises to protect its core areas of interest. Mr. Antony was talking to newspersons in New Delhi this morning on the sidelines of the ongoing Armed Forces Commander's conference.

On Chinese Army's presence in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, PoK, the Minister said they are present in the area since a long time. He said India is aware of the fact and has conveyed its concern to China also. Mr. Antony said, for the last several years, India has strengthened its capabilities in the Eastern sector on its own territory.

The Defence Minister added that the country will receive the refitted Gorshkov warship next year.

This is a logical move why spend money placing assets in the South China seas when you can forge alliances with South China sea nations??

somebody just started to build a new home at Maldives.

Any expansion by the Chinese in Indian waters will be a fruitless effort because they will always have no access to supply lines, even if their slave Pakistan helps them.
