However, should a sea conflict erupt, I would imagine it will be against Vietnam Navy and ports since they are the host and need be punished, Indian company will be spared. But that scenario may never happen because Vietnam rely too much on China that China has other unmilitary means to pressure them.

It's time CHINA stop playing or acting as a Big Brother in Asia Yes you are relatively Big in Military, Big in Economy, Big in Resource, Big in Size, Big in Diplomacy.

But you are very small in Heart to accept any one who may challenge you in coming years so you cry foul on every act of INDIA, And i can say you WAR against India and China may be the last option but even if you attack Vietnam it will be a poor show of strength of PLA.

How many enemy do you like to have when you become superpower even if you do ? US with just 1 competing superpower used all in the kit to defame them but see now US really understood who is the real enemy and their pay for what they sowed.

Arming our enemy to fight against us and to use your weapons against us, building infrastructure inside disputed POK claimed by India, building navel base to encircle India is also considered as action of forced war just like you always say as the reason for 1962 Indo-China war. It is not possible for you to attack on Vietnam without harming Indian companies and this would be obvious aggression against India. India has right to defend its interests whether you like it or not so if you attack to punish Vietnam then you may confront with Indian Navy to defend Vietnam's ports.

India invited by Vietnam to the south china sea, not to drill for oil, but to make the south china sea dispute internationalized, VN need oil by herself, and not in the position of China and India, can drill oil from other countries, VN only drill on her one territories, now mostly the off shore of south china sea. VN is good player you know, defeated USA, take advantages of China and Soviet at old times. Now India invited to explore the unknown water with them. If VN let OVL drill the oil fields already produce oil, India is the winner, if only told to check the deep water where maybe has oil, then OVL will get lost in future.
The deep water deposited oil or gas, if really found. Need technology and skill to develop, not economic at all if oil price less than USD200, Maybe after 10years, the possibility will come, but as you know, China already make the deep water drill platform, can work in 3000meter deep sea, also china make the drill which can drill 10000meter deep. China's deep submarine already dived in the Indian ocean. China now only need to make the disputes alive, not do anything. I think maybe 10years OVL can not get technically ready to drill the south china sea, then the cooperation between OVL will get in troubles. Because is OVL get oil, same like suck the VN's blood, if OVL not get oil, India will say :f**k.
If OVL and VN really get oil from the disputed water, at least after 10years later, you will the USA will at which side by then.
