Pakistan yesterday tested burraq ucav with two laser guided missiles .so our DRDO scientists perhaps need another 40-50 years to complete armed version of rustom.really shame to DRDO.Pakistan a small nation with low defence budget can do it but our scientists with at least 3-4 times more fund even struggling for the first flight test of rustom 2 UAV.really feeling angry for DRDO.

Its nothing but a Chinese CH3.

DRDO does the research, Design specs are given by IAF and IA so does IN, Rustom is a male UAV, Note the time line for Predator or Global Hawk you may understand better ..

Get proper knowledge before speaking it away ..

April 18, 2015: The DRDO is looking for a newly designed landing gear kit for its recently unveiled Panchi UAV, a wheeled version of the in-service Nishant surveillance drone. Panchi is designed take-off and land from a prepared run way like a conventional aircraft, has a nose landing gear (NLG) and a main landing gear (MLG) consisting of fixed composite struts as part of its airframe. What the developers are looking for is a landing gear kit consisting of wheels, tires and hydraulic braking system, essential to meet the take-off and landing requirement. Interested vendor will be required to design, supply and integrate the landing gear kit with the existing nose and main landing gear while meeting the requirements of landing loads, braking distance etc. for smooth operation of the aircraft. DRDO has stipulated that vendors should have prior experience of supplying and/or developing similar items for other UAVs/light manned aircraft. Vendor will be required to design and supply six sets of the Landing Gear Kit. The Panchi UAV, identical in all respects to the rail-launcher deployed Nishant UAV in terms of range and payload, will operate from runways, including unprepared surfaces and has found interest in the Army and paramilitary forces already.

Ever since a weaponized Chinese CH-3 Drone crashed in Nigeria and Pakistan unveiled an 'indigenous' version of the same drone called Burraq, there is a newfound urgency in India to develop armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As such, work on weaponizing the Rustom-I medium altitude long endurance UAV is being hastened and first weapon trials will take place this year. The Rustom-I, developed by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) will initially be armed with the HELINA anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) and subsequently with smaller munitions specifically developed for UAV carriage. Armed UAV development in India has been carried out at a rather slow pace till date owing at least partly to American concerns about the same. These concerns were likely taken into account because key domestic UAV development programmes till recently had been somewhat dependent on American sources for key components such as actuators. However the recent United States (US) State Department's withdrawal of export licenses on MTCR grounds for some seven types of MOOG actuators that feature in ADE's flagship Rustom- II MALE UAV means that India need no longer be so concerned about what America thinks. As of now, indigenously developed replacement actuators have completed electro-magnetic interference/compatibility tests etc and high speed taxi-trials (HSTT) of the Rustom-II have re- commenced. These taxi-trials will go up to a speed of 55 knots, just 10 knots shy of take-off speed. First flight will happen in June 2015 after a delay of more than a year on account of MOOG's non- supply.

Why dont we help our Armed forces and paramilitary forces in Kashmir and Naxal infected states to combat terrorism using drones? Many a times armed forces or paramilitary forces surround terrorists and gun battle ensues. In such case UAVs can bombard terrorist hideouts. It will lead to less human casualties.

DRDO shows glimpses of IUSAV Combat Drone again

DRDO in its monthly Publication has shown Model of India’s first stealthy unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) program which is taking shape. Pictured at Research Centre Imarat (RCI) Indian Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle (IUSAV) seems to be similar to the first images which surfaced from the design optimization and concept definition phase.

Research Centre Imarat (RCI) facility specialises in the development of Precision guided ammunition (PGMs) and also has been tasked to develop weapons which can be fired from UAVs and UCAV platforms.

DRDO’s flying-wing concept is similar to flying-wing UAVs such as the European Neuron and Boeing Phantom Ray. IUSAV earlier code-named AURA will be developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which are still working on its final design work. UCAV will be used as a Strategic Bomber which can fire Laser guided Strike weapons and will use Composite and Stealth technology to evade enemy radars.

DRDO and many of its labs are working on development of radar-absorbent paint and materials, cool exhaust signatures for infrared suppression, conformal sensors and antennas, data links and flying-wing aerodynamics.With some Pace in the development of India’s 5th generation fighter jet, AMCA Project will help IUSAV which will utilize many of the technology developed for the fighter jet. IUSAV will be powered by a Single Dry variant of Kaveri engine and will make its first flight post-2020.

It will be much interesting to see some Guided bombs from it ..
It seems like Guided bombs have been fired from UAV which could be only be Rustum - 1 in our case.Check this Link

Satheesh Reddy:Like the lightweight PGM under development here in RCI at the moment. This PGM has already been test-fired from an unmanned aerial vehicle and a sizeable number can also be carried by a missile like the Prithvi or by an aircraft like the Su-30 MKI. The Prithvi configuration can be used for attacking runways for example.

Because Nuron has 0.8 by pass ratio engine, not every UCAV in the world has to have bigger by pass ratio engine!!

So no need to change anything on K-9 to fit into AURA.

by pass ratio plays no part in UCAV engine selection.

No need to change innards or exxards(???) of K-9 to fit it into AURA.

All we need is good enough thrust to weight ratio, nothing more.

This has got nothing to do with how others have done it. It has everything to do with how it can be done, with lesser risks and in the time the article is required. The French are only foreigners. Not idiots. Well mostly.


Check out this video at 1:09 minutes to see how a K-9 class engined aircraft optimized for transonic flights has to fly doing chase duty for a nEUROn optimized for subsonic flights. The respective angles of attack ie.



If this kind of planform could have flown past Mach 1 then the world would have done it by now. This B-2 kind of planform is meant for easier on the engines subsonic flights ideally using flattened nozzles for LO. From the front optimized for S &/or L-Band stealth. Will also carry a lot of fuel and warload. And its not going to go beyond Mach 1 in any useful manner then there is no need for an AB. That is obvious. But if you lose the AB then what else can be done to make it all buy-able for IAF. Which is the real goal. Also the real Vulnerable Point. And IAF has just learnt from its import vendors something like Life Cycle Costing. I hope you get the drift. The Brits give 'Soverign Capability' as one of the reasons for going into Taranis program, even though they could simply have bought things from Americans or French, their NATO partners. But then IAF has much more important things to do. Anyways people would just love to get into your programs. Even the nEUROn has a lot of American COTS tech and a Brit engine. MTCR stops not just the engines also the other 'dual use' items if they are meant for 500/300 missiles/UCAVs.


OTOH without COTS items the development phase of AURA is also likely to go way up. So its not like we don't have a self interest in that MTCR either. You have already seen how a Radome and IFR, COTS items are being played with.


Off course K-9 can be ported to AURA. You just have to come prepared for what you are attempting. In fact nEUROn was not even supposed to be there. Frenchies wanted a twin engined, bomb truck. Grand Duc is what they called it. Grand Duc went away and nEUROn came in because of pressure of the collaborators - Swiss and Swedes. Pressure of the Collaborator is a real life thing.


Coincidentally AURA looks a lot in the same category as nEUROn (image above in this thread). K-9 minus its AB, will give ~50 KN while Adour 951 gives around 44 KN. The extra power should enable better payload.


The French also wanted to produce another UCAV capable of going as high as 1.6 machs and as low as ~120 knots. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault-Sagem_SlowFast. Looked nothing like nEUROn. This obviously would have required a After Burner enabled engine. K-9 should fit right into such a thing without any changes.


However AURA currently looks a lot like nEUROn and others in the same class. All of which have the same kind of engines, tweeked from K-9 classed engines.


My case is not about whether K-9 can go into AURA. Its about a new import opportunity. Remains to be seen what ultimately gets imported.

NEW DELHI: The government has quietly approved the purchase of 10 missile-armed drones from Israel — a crucial acquisition that will enhance India's cross-border military strike capability. The $ 400-million proposal for buying armed Heron TP drones from Israel was cleared last week. These drones will be operated by the Indian Air Force, which has a fleet of reconnaissance drones. IAF also has a fleet of Harpy UAVs from Israel, which are self- destructing systems primarily tasked with taking out enemy radar positions.Senior defence ministry officials told ET on the condition of anonymity that the project has been accelerated under directions from the highest levels of government and that armed drones may join service within a year. The armed forces had proposed buying the same armed drones in 2012. But that proposal did not get political backing in UPA-2, senior officials said. Officials ET spoke with said the project was revived and fasttracked by the Modi government earlier this year. Israel's armed Heron drones are similar to the Predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are capable of reconnaissance, combat and support roles. Heron drones can carry a payload of over 1,000 kg and will be equipped with air-to-ground missiles that detect, track and take down targets deep in enemy territory.

Yeah..... But where are we in smart ammunition category. Other then Sudarshan, I have yet to learn about any guided or smart bomb from India.
Could anyone please help in this regard?
