Never saw them in action, hard to tell ..

Even Tunguska make lot of noise and flash but that does not mean its effective ..
I got the same doubt because the range of gun is 4500 meters, if the enemy standoff range is more than that the gun will be useless.
How about CIWS and iron dome for point defense.

he Upgraded Schilka system is an advanced air defence system against attacking aircraft and helicopters. The Upgradation includes replacing the existing Radar, analog computer, engine, GTE with state of the art system and addition of air conditioning system for crew comfort. This upgraded system provides drastic improvements in operational performance, accuracies, power consumption and MTBF. The addition of an electro-optical system operating in parallel with the radar enables accurate identification, acquisition and tracking of targets while operating in an ECM environment.

The system is capable of firing aerial targets while on move. The system can accept cueing from external Surveillance Radar. The system can engage enemy aircraft during day or night and in all weather conditions.

FEATURES
  • 3D Active Phased Array Radar
  • Single Target Tracking
  • Multiple Target Tracking due to Electronic Steering in Elevation
  • ECCM Features
  • Low Output Power
  • Optronic System (CCD / TI / LRF)
  • Operator Comfort with Air Conditioner
  • User Friendly Operator Displays
  • New Engine with drastic reduction in fuel consumption
  • Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) protection system

Only optical system, But automated turret ..

=========================

Best if its mounted on MBT chassis not BMP because BMP has issues and mounting on MBT chassis will result in same mobility or better and better ammo capacity & crew comfort ..

1. We have the radar.
2. We have the guns.
3. We have the MBT chassis ( Arjun, T-72/55 )

What needed is requirement given by the Army to DRDO and BEL to make it happen ..

Will these systems be able to fire on the move if mounted? Also, if the requirement is to support Armoured columns, the AD will have to armoured and tracked as well. So which chassis would be the best fit for something like that? I think BMP chassis would work.

A key difference in this system would be that the radar would be on a different vehicle and it will have to pass on the information to all vehicle-mounted L70 or ZU-23-2 which would only rely on Electro-Optical FCS. This makes the entire system vulnerable, especially because a single radar is catering to 4 different gun carrier platforms.
To overcome that, I was wondering if it is possible to mount 4 L70 and a Flycatcher or Atulya radar on a single armoured chassis, but I am not sure if the radar would be compact enough to fit. Maybe they can make a smaller radar for this?

How about using ASTRA as iron dome for point defense from mbrls and glide bombs for bases?
Iron dome launcher has 20 missiles so more protection and less logistics headache.

Yes I have asked somewhat similar question to a DRDO HQ scientist...he said experience gained from trishul will definitely to QRSAM....it's trishul reborn indeed & of course with modern inputs..

i think Indian Army received 1 upgraded ZSU-23-4 Schilka in 2014 itself......!!!

Indian Army receives first upgraded Schilka air defence system from BEL

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has delivered the first modernised ZSU-23-4 Schilka air defence weapon system to the Indian Army at its facility in Bengaluru, India.

In March 2011, the state-owned company received a contract to upgrade approximately 90 of the army’s ageing Schilka systems, which were acquired from Russia in the early 1980s, as reported by Indo Asian News Service.

BEL said in a statement: "Schilka is an all-weather, self-propelled, tracked, low-level air defence weapon system and its upgraded version has search-cum-track digital radar, with [an] electro-optical fire control system.

"The army has given clearance for bulk production of the enhanced weapon system, whose main engine, auxiliary engine, integrated fire detection, suppression system, nuclear, biological and chemical filter and communication system have also been upgraded."

Under the first phase of the contract, the company upgraded a total of 48 tanks, with the remaining units set be modernised in the second phase.

As part of the upgrade, the radar, analogy computer and engine were replaced with advanced systems, and an air conditioning system was added for crew comfort.

Schilka ZSU-23-4 Upgrade

BEL's Schilka ZSU-23-4 Upgrade at DefExpo 2014
BEL is upgrading Schilka lightly armored tanks equipped with the ZSU-23-4 gun system. Primarily developed to engage low flying aircraft, Schilka tanks were imported from Russia in 1984-85 and have been in use since.

Around 80-90 tanks still remain in service. The original technology that went into the weapon system has now hopelessly outdated. As a result, BEL has been tasked to completely refit the system to extend its service life.

BEL, in a tie up with an Ukrainian firm, won the contract to overhaul the tanks in a global tender, outbidding the original Russian manufacturers.

BEL is not just replacing the existing systems (Radar, analog computer, engine, GTE ) with more modern one, but adding new features to increase crew comfort and safety. This upgraded system has dramatically improved operational performance and accuracy and MTBF with much lower power consumption. An electro-optical system has been added, which operates in parallel with the radar enabling accurate identification, acquisition and tracking of targets while operating in an ECM environment.

The upgraded Schilkas feature

  • 3D Active Phased Array Radar
  • Single Target Tracking
  • Multiple Target Tracking due to Electronic Steering in Elevation
  • ECCM Features
  • Low Output Power
  • Optronic System (CCD / TI / LRF)
  • Operator Comfort with Air Conditioner
  • User Friendly Operator Displays
  • New Engine with drastic reduction in fuel consumption
  • Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) protection system

They have the ability to engage aerial targets while on the move during day or night and in all weather
conditions. They can be cued using an external Surveillance Radar.
