L70 status present and tomorrow :

40mm L70 forms the backbone of Army AD, It is radar guided AAA which use programmable ammunition and dumb for ground targets, bofors L70 & L60 are most effective AAA till date who hold most aircraft down via AAA fire till date since WW2.

Flycatcher radar is used for guiding these AAA, A single radar can control four L70 guns, The radar works on X band and have optical secondary target system for engaging aircrafts and low flying objects, These radars are further upgraded by BEL ..

=====================
=====================

Near future :

Their are 200 of these guns are upgraded, L&T and BEL both provided their solution , The new L70 has its own organic sighting and radar for engagement both day and night..

BEL`s upgrade of L70..

=====================

Besides guns` organic sub systems, Their is also an effort to mordernise existing fire-control radar, Both L&T and DRDO put their effort ..

L&T design is much like Flycatcher but has advance technology and DRDO pushed this a little far by making the system mobile ..

As we know the Army Air Defence operates a variety of SAM and gun systems.

If we look at upgrades we know:

1) 2 Regiments of Akash are being delivered.

2) 5 regiments of MRSAM on order

3) Shilka upgrade in progress

However, what is the status of the L-70 upgrade? AFAIK BEL is upgrading 200 of the 1000 odd guns.

Was Punj Lloyd ever awarded the contract for the Zu-23-2 upgrade?

My view is yes. India had considered fitting Iglas. For some reason said no. However, Shilkas are still very useful against helicopters, UAVs and even close in defence vs aircraft on rocket or strafing runs.

5 regiments of MRSAM= How many systems and launcher?
As far as I know: 40 launchers.
S-300? Indian Army certainly has none. It will not receive such a long-range system.
However, I've heard many rumours of a single of 6 launchers being received.
I don't know that I believe those rumours.

To be honest, that looks like the original. The radar was to be replaced in the upgrade with a phased array system.

he Upgraded Schilka system is an advanced air defence system against attacking aircraft and helicopters. The Upgradation includes replacing the existing Radar, analog computer, engine, GTE with state of the art system and addition of air conditioning system for crew comfort. This upgraded system provides drastic improvements in operational performance, accuracies, power consumption and MTBF. The addition of an electro-optical system operating in parallel with the radar enables accurate identification, acquisition and tracking of targets while operating in an ECM environment.

The system is capable of firing aerial targets while on move. The system can accept cueing from external Surveillance Radar. The system can engage enemy aircraft during day or night and in all weather conditions.

FEATURES
  • 3D Active Phased Array Radar
  • Single Target Tracking
  • Multiple Target Tracking due to Electronic Steering in Elevation
  • ECCM Features
  • Low Output Power
  • Optronic System (CCD / TI / LRF)
  • Operator Comfort with Air Conditioner
  • User Friendly Operator Displays
  • New Engine with drastic reduction in fuel consumption
  • Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) protection system

Importing Country: India
Russian Developer, Exporter or Manufacturer: Rosvoorouzhenie
Date: 1998
Activity: Signs 10-year defense cooperation agreement worth nearly $1 billion to include jointly developing military hardware including six S-300V anti-tactical ballistic missile systems

Do IA have anything for long range air defence or is that role of air force?

You were right about the 6 launchers of S-300V

As far as I know: 40 launchers.

Any reason we are not making our our own manpads apart from kickbacks from import?

Seeker is your answer. Although we have developed Amogha-1, but this too is said to be 2nd gen MANPAD. Along with this, we are working on tube launched MANPADS too, but till now only AMOGHA is the one which has undergone test.
