The question is what really we gained from 1971? Pakistanis were no doubt killing a lot of people but it was excarbated by India's help to Mukti Bahini. In 1971 Hindus of East Pakistan were the worst sufferers and they gained virtually nothing. Chakma Buddhists are going through extinction. We hoped to have Bangladesh as a friendly country, it is not. Bangladeshi people are extremely anti-Indian, their comments are explicit. We neither could solve Chicken Neck problem nor could give NE access to sea,9 in that way we could have saved Chakma Buddhists.

As for Pakistan, it was not weakened. It became even more anti-India and started funding terrorists. It decided to have strategic depth which destroyed Afghanistan. I am not saying if India did not intervene in 1971 and if Soviets came to Afghanistan Pakistan would not help Mujahideens. However gaining Afghanistan as compensation of Bangladesh became part of their plan.

So the question is what we really gained? A decisive military victory that we could not exploit.
