New Delhi: Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has proposed projects worth $130 million project to rid India of the scourge of open defecation and clean up a rail system he described as the world's "largest open toilet", reports said on Friday.

Jairam Ramesh told a meeting in New Delhi on Thursday that India, where 130 million households are without a latrine, accounted for 60 per cent of the global volume of open defecation.

"This is a matter of great shame, anguish, sorrow, and actually anger," Mr Ramesh, who is also responsible for the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

He unveiled a proposal to spend 1.5 billion rupees ($28 million) to provide 100,000 bio-toilets to villages across India in the next two years.

He also proposed a 5.0 billion rupee project to replace the open-hole toilets on the 50,000 coaches that ply India's vast railway network with bio-toilets over the next five years.

Carrying 11 million passengers a day, Indian Railways "is really the largest open toilet in the world", Mr Ramesh said, adding that his ministry would be willing to pick up half the cost of the toilet re-fit.

I can remember when US trains had open toilets. The reason I remember is that as a kid I tried to toss a big firecracker (M-80)

into the toilet of a moving train, but it exploded in the bowl. My ears were ringing for hours after that.

He is only a chatter box. Makes big sensational statements but do nothing.
If he really wanted to do anything, we would have already started seeing some results, he has been Minister for quite some time now.

Let's see how much of $130 Million is actually used and if the project is implemented.Let's hope money for Toilets doesn't go by drain. :taunt:

The issue in India is not about money and projects but actual IMPLEMENTATION.

No wonder if 129 Million actually lands up in the Swiss banks of politicians.

The problem is there with people defecating in trains, but more so with those who defecate in standing trains on the station. There are many who use trains standing on the platform to take a dump.

But JR is totally clueless. No one whimpers while being incharge of a ministry, when one can easily act.

He is correct, but what is he doing about the problem...??? AFAIK Manohar Parrikar, current CM of Goa, even as an ordinary MLA used to be particular about the cleanliness in his constituency.

This guy is just making noises.

Try finding a public toillet in China. Guangzhou is a city of 12 million, but less than 1000 public toillets. They want you to do it at home which makes sightseeing very short range.

The world is an open toilet.

Domesticated animals and wild beasts in the jungle should also be toilet trained!

I think he is talking about Patari i.e. rail, and yes sadly he is right in this regard, rail tracks are full of sh!ts even in the stations and junctions :yuck: at least there should be underground gutters to flow it away in the stations.

Even so he is only having fun by making such statements he is not serious !
